This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the currency culture of human history, there are two wonderful works that are immortal. One is that of China, an ancient Oriental civilization, which has influenced the currency culture of many Asian countries for more than a thousand years. The other is the monetary culture of ancient Greece, the birthplace of western monetary culture, which later gave rise to the Arab and Indian coin systems. This book presents survey on Chinese ancient currency of all ages, before moving on to elaborate upon the history of currency culture exchange between China and other countries, such as ancient Greece and Rome, East Asia, Southeast Asia, Southern Asia, Western and central Asia. It considers the influence of Chinese currency on the currency development of the neighboring Asian regions and countries, as well as the interaction between ancient Chinese coins and European and American coins in different periods.

Book Chinese Numismatics

Download or read book Chinese Numismatics written by Helen Wang and published by . This book was released on 2022-07-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to explore the history of the field of Chinese numismatics from both Eastern and Western perspectives. Consisting of four papers that complement each other beautifully, it gives a sound introduction to the study of Chinese numismatics, focusing on the 19th century and, crucially, how to think about Chinese money. In "Currencies of Ancient China from their Origins to the Late Empire", François Thierry notes how Europeans sometimes understood Chinese money and sometimes got it completely wrong. In "Numismatic Friendship: Social Networks of Numismatists and Coin Collectors During the Late Qing Dynasty", Lyce Jankowski opens up the world of Chinese collectors of Chinese coins, their networks and motivations. In "A Short History of Chinese Numismatics in Western Languages", Helen Wang surveys publications to 1900, giving information about the authors, their occupations, motivations and areas of interest; and in "Chinese Money Matters, So Why Does It Have Such a Low Profile?" she looks at the current situation, and offers routes into the field. In his Introduction, Joe Cribb reflects on his study of Chinese money and how it has informed his career in numismatics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Chinese Currency: Coin and Paper Money It is now two years since the first thought occurred to me to write a historical and critical inquiry into the metallic and paper currency of the Chinese, followed from original sources. The source chiefly drawn upon and consulted by me has been "the Examination on Currency')" by the Chinese scholar Ma-two.n-lin J), treated of in the VIII and IX Volumes of his great Encyclopedia. Ma-twan-lin 8 life and works have been described by abel, remusat in the "Biographie Universelle." He was born in Po-yangs), province of Kiang-si, probably about the year 1245, when the end of the dynasty was near, and the social condition of China was most miserable in consequence of an over-issue of paper money. Under the last emperor of this dynasty he held an important public office, but when the Mongols had conquered the Chinese empire, he resigned his post aud devoted himself entirely to scientific studies. During twenty years ho was engaged upon the composition of his great work from which the materials of this volume have been gathered. Book The Pattern of the Chinese Past

Download or read book The Pattern of the Chinese Past written by Mark Elvin and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1973 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A satisfactory comprehensive history of the social and economic development of pre-modern China, the largest country in the world in terms of population, and with a documentary record covering three millennia, is still far from possible. The present work is only an attempt to disengage the major themes that seem to be of relevance to our understanding of China today. In particular, this volume studies three questions. Why did the Chinese Empire stay together when the Roman Empire, and every other empire of antiquity of the middle ages, ultimately collapsed? What were the causes of the medieval revolution which made the Chinese economy after about 1100 the most advanced in the world? And why did China after about 1350 fail to maintain her earlier pace of technological advance while still, in many respects, advancing economically? The three sections of the book deal with these problems in turn but the division of a subject matter is to some extent only one of convenience. These topics are so interrelated that, in the last analysis, none of them can be considered in isolation from the others.
