Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A riveting look at how dog and humans became best friends, and the first history of dog domestication to include insights from indigenous peoples In this fascinating book, Raymond Pierotti and Brandy Fogg change the narrative about how wolves became dogs and in turn, humanity’s best friend. Rather than describe how people mastered and tamed an aggressive, dangerous species, the authors describe coevolution and mutualism. Wolves, particularly ones shunned by their packs, most likely initiated the relationship with Paleolithic humans, forming bonds built on mutually recognized skills and emotional capacity. This interdisciplinary study draws on sources from evolutionary biology as well as tribal and indigenous histories to produce an intelligent, insightful, and often unexpected story of cooperative hunting, wolves protecting camps, and wolf-human companionship. This fascinating assessment is a must-read for anyone interested in human evolution, ecology, animal behavior, anthropology, and the history of canine domestication.

Book Soviet Orientalism and the Creation of Central Asian Nations

Download or read book Soviet Orientalism and the Creation of Central Asian Nations written by Alfrid K. Bustanov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orientalism – the idea that the standpoint of Western writers on the East greatly affected what they wrote about the East, the "Other" – applied also in Russia and the Soviet Union, where the study of the many exotic peoples incorporated into the Russian Empire, often in quite late imperial times, became a major academic industry, where, as in the West, the standpoint of writers greatly affected what they wrote. Russian/Soviet orientalism had a particularly important impact in Central Asia, where in early Soviet times new republics, later states, were created, often based on the distorted perceptions of scholars in St Petersburg and Moscow, and often cutting across previously existing political and cultural boundaries. The book explores how the Soviet orientalism academic industry influenced the creation of Central Asian nations. It discusses the content of oriental sources and discourses, considers the differences between scholars working in St Petersburg and Moscow and those working more locally in Central Asia, providing a rich picture of academic politics, and shows how academic cultural classification cemented political boundaries, often in unhelpful ways.

  • Pages : 454 pages

Download or read book Central Asian Shepherd written by Ekaterina R Rekowski and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-13 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central Asian Shepherd, Alabai, Ovcharka, Tobet... so many names are used to describe this wonderfully unique breed of dog! From the remote villages of Central Asia evolved the Central Asian Shepherd, a breed whose origins trace back over four millennia. They have a fascinating history and well-developed working ability.Up until now, the only in-depth publication about Central Asian Shepherds was A. Labunskiy's Dogs of Central Asia, written in Russian. His book provides comprehensive information about the breed; I have asked his permission to translate his chapters from Russian to English for inclusion in this book. For years, these dogs have been very popular in Russia and other former Soviet republics; now interest in them is growing in Europe and North America. The purpose of this informative but fun-to-read book is to showcase the history and development of Central Asian Shepherds for anyone seriously interested in deepening their knowledge of the breed. A. Labunskiy's travel notes are included, describing his visits to the countries of Central Asia; through him you'll meet traditional chabans and the dogs that have been helping them with their work for thousands of years. You will find information about imperfections in the breed standard, as well as learn how to keep and care for these dogs. Specifics about grooming, training, feeding, and even how to best house the breed are included in this book. These dogs are quite unique, and this book describes their specific characteristics and needs in an attempt to educate those that are unfamiliar with Central Asian Shepherds. Also included is comprehensive information how to best navigate the process of choosing a puppy, and the differences between dogs used for fighting and authentic working dogs. There will also be a discussion in this book of the problems that face this breed and predictions about the development and conservation of the breed in the future.Author Ekaterina Rekowski has owned Central Asian Shepherds since 1994. She is now a certified dog trainer and owns and operates a kennel, Guardian Dog in Michigan, where she breeds high-quality puppies. She shares stories from her life with these dogs and passes on techniques she has learned over the years.

Book Components and Systems

Download or read book Components and Systems written by Gerald Staib and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-01-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction systems reduced to the smallest possible number of identical elements have long been used by architects to build structures as well as dismantle and change them as quickly, efficiently, and economically as possible. Think of the architecture of the nomads, the Crystal Palace designed by the architect John Paxton for the London World’s Fair of 1851, or the modern construction systems of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in steel, concrete, and wood. Coupled with modern digital planning and production methods, modular precast construction systems that are adaptable for many combinations and capable of being combined with one other will play an increasingly important role in architecture in the future. The volume Components and Systems offers an in-depth and clearly organized presentation of the various types of precast building components – from semifinished products to building with components, open and closed systems, and skeleton and panel construction all the way to spatial cell constructions. The systems are accompanied by detailed drawings and color photographs. Discussions of transporting and assembling the various systems round off the topic and make this book an indispensable practical companion.
