Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many African stories, whether or not they are about Kwaku Ananse the "spider man," are called, "Spider Stories." This book is about how that came to be. The African storyteller begins: "We do not really mean, we do not really mean that what we are about to say is true. A Story, a story; let it come, let it go." And it tells that long, long ago there were no stories on earth for children to hear. All stories belonged to Nyame, the Sky God. Ananse, the Spider man, wanted to buy some of these stories, so he spun a web up to the sky and went up to bargain with the Sky God. The price the Sky God asked was Osebo, the leopard of-the-terrible-teeth, Mmboro the hornet who-stings-like-fire, and Mmoatia the fairy whom-men-never-see. How Ananse paid the price is told in a graceful and clever text, with forceful, lovely woodcut illustrations.

This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best-selling author Rick Riordan presents Kwame Mbalia's epic fantasy, a middle grade American Gods set in a richly-imagined world populated with African American folk heroes and West African gods. Seventh grader Tristan Strong feels anything but strong ever since he failed to save his best friend when they were in a bus accident together. All he has left of Eddie is the journal his friend wrote stories in. Tristan is dreading the month he's going to spend on his grandparents' farm in Alabama, where he's being sent to heal from the tragedy. But on his first night there, a sticky creature shows up in his bedroom and steals Eddie's notebook. Tristan chases after it--is that a doll?--and a tug-of-war ensues between them underneath a Bottle Tree. In a last attempt to wrestle the journal out of the creature's hands, Tristan punches the tree, accidentally ripping open a chasm into the MidPass, a volatile place with a burning sea, haunted bone ships, and iron monsters that are hunting the inhabitants of this world. Tristan finds himself in the middle of a battle that has left black American folk heroes John Henry and Brer Rabbit exhausted. In order to get back home, Tristan and these new allies will need to entice the god Anansi, the Weaver, to come out of hiding and seal the hole in the sky. But bartering with the trickster Anansi always comes at a price. Can Tristan save this world before he loses more of the things he loves?

Book Ananse and the Sky God

Download or read book Ananse and the Sky God written by Anthony O. Ansong and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anansi (ah-NAHN-see), the spider, is a popular figure in the folklore of parts of West Africa (the stories later came to the Caribbean islands.) Like Brier Rabbit in America, Anansi is a 'trickster' figure - clever, cunning, and sometimes mischievous - who uses his wits to make up for what he lacks in size and strength. Tales by the fireside, also known as “Anansesem” are special epical bedtimes stories, which were told during the evening by an elderly person in the family or in the village. These were stories that have good morals, ditties and funny inclinations of educating the young ones of a special character called Kwaku Anansi. This story tells us about how Kwaku Anansi took an advantage over his friends with a spell casted by an old witch.

Award-winning author of Ghana Must Go, Taiye Selasi, reimagines the story of Anansi, the much-loved trickster, for a new generation. Kweku has grown up hearing stories about the mischievous spider Anansi. He is given the nickname Anansi by his father because of his similarly cheeky ways. Book excerpt: Anansi the Spiderman or rather spider and man originated with the Ashanti people of present day Ghana. Anansi's father, the Sky God Nyame, got so tired of his son's pranks that he turned him into a spider. The stories of Anansi were brought to the Caribbean by slaves, some of whom kept up the oral tradition of their people by recounting some event in the life of their village. The stories also included some folklore such as the life and times of Anansi, the trickster. Accordingly Anansi is described as a creature who was always trying to best anyone with whom he came in contact. The general idea for him was that although small he could outsmart creatures much bigger than himself. This is actually a lesson for us that we should depend on brain power rather than the physical. Anansi took pride in this and sometimes came out on top but sometime things went badly for him. When he was victorious he was “The Man” but during the bad times he became the spider and retreated to his web to hide and wait for more opportunities to outsmart his friends. My granddaughter, Mikailah, is so enamored with Anansi, “The Man” that she only wants to hear stories in which he is victorious in tricking other creatures. She calls him “Nancy”. Her favorite story is about Anansi and Brer Tiger in which Anansi was “sick” and got Brer Tiger to take him to the doctor…
