Book Stochastic Modeling of Manufacturing Systems

Download or read book Stochastic Modeling of Manufacturing Systems written by George Liberopoulos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-12 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manufacturing systems rarely perform exactly as expected and predicted. Unexpected events, such as order changes, equipment failures and product defects, affect the performance of the system and complicate decision-making. This volume is devoted to the development of analytical methods aiming at responding to variability in a way that limits its corrupting effects on system performance. The book includes fifteen novel chapters that mostly focus on the development and analysis of performance evaluation models of manufacturing systems using decomposition-based methods, Markovian and queuing analysis, simulation, and inventory control approaches. They are organized into four distinct sections to reflect their shared viewpoints: factory design, unreliable production lines, queuing network models, production planning and assembly.

Book Stochastic Modeling and Optimization of Manufacturing Systems and Supply Chains

Download or read book Stochastic Modeling and Optimization of Manufacturing Systems and Supply Chains written by J. George Shanthikumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume originates from two workshops, both focusing on themes that are reflected in the title of the volume. The first workshop took place at Eindhoven University of Technology, April 24-26, 2001, on the occasion of the University granting a doctorate honoris causa to Profes sor John A. Buzacott. The second workshop was held on June 15, 2002 at Cornell University (preceding the annual INFORMSjMSOM Confer ence), honoring John's retirement and his lifetime contributions. Each of the two workshops consisted of about a dozen technical presentations. The objective of the volume, however, is not to simply publish the proceedings of the two workshops. Rather, our objective is to put to gether a select set of articles, each organized into a well-written chapter, focusing on a timely topic. Collected into a single volume, these chapters aim to serve as a useful reference for researchers and practitioners alike, and also as reading materials for graduate courses or seminars.

Book Manufacturing Systems Design and Analysis

Download or read book Manufacturing Systems Design and Analysis written by B. Wu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technological book is written and published for one of two reasons: it either renders some other book in the same field obsolete or breaks new ground in the sense that a gap is filled. The present book aims to do the latter. On my return from industry to an academic career, I started writing this book because I had seen that a gap existed. Although a great deal of information appeared in the published literature about various technical aspects of advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), surprisingly little had been written about the systems con text within which the sophisticated hardware and software of AMT are utilized to increase efficiency. Therefore, I have attempted in this book to show how structured approaches in the design and evaluation of modern manufacturing plant may be adopted, with the objective of improving the performance of the factory as a whole. I hope this book will be a contribution to the newly recognized, multidisciplinary engineering function known as manufacturing sys tems engineering. The text has been designed specifically to demonstrate the systems aspects of modern manufacturing operations, including: systems con cepts of manufacturing operation; manufacturing systems modelling and evalua tion; and the structured design of manufacturing systems~ One of the major difficulties associated with writing a text of this nature stems from the diversity of the topics involved. I have attempted to solve this problem by adopting an overall framework into which the relevant topics are fitted.

Book Dynamic Stochastic Optimization

Download or read book Dynamic Stochastic Optimization written by Kurt Marti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uncertainties and changes are pervasive characteristics of modern systems involving interactions between humans, economics, nature and technology. These systems are often too complex to allow for precise evaluations and, as a result, the lack of proper management (control) may create significant risks. In order to develop robust strategies we need approaches which explic itly deal with uncertainties, risks and changing conditions. One rather general approach is to characterize (explicitly or implicitly) uncertainties by objec tive or subjective probabilities (measures of confidence or belief). This leads us to stochastic optimization problems which can rarely be solved by using the standard deterministic optimization and optimal control methods. In the stochastic optimization the accent is on problems with a large number of deci sion and random variables, and consequently the focus ofattention is directed to efficient solution procedures rather than to (analytical) closed-form solu tions. Objective and constraint functions of dynamic stochastic optimization problems have the form of multidimensional integrals of rather involved in that may have a nonsmooth and even discontinuous character - the tegrands typical situation for "hit-or-miss" type of decision making problems involving irreversibility ofdecisions or/and abrupt changes ofthe system. In general, the exact evaluation of such functions (as is assumed in the standard optimization and control theory) is practically impossible. Also, the problem does not often possess the separability properties that allow to derive the standard in control theory recursive (Bellman) equations.

Book Effect of Control Frequency on the Performance of Manufacturing Systems with Controllable Production Rates

Download or read book Effect of Control Frequency on the Performance of Manufacturing Systems with Controllable Production Rates written by José Israel Castañeda Vega and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) The intended contribution of this work is a better understanding of the influence of control frequency on the time behavior of flow-line manufacturing systems. The development of pertinent simulation and analytical models for performance assessment is presented. From the simulation results, one effect of control frequency on system behavior motivating further research is evident. An analytical model resembling the simulation one is elaborated. The occurrence of control actions is modeled as homogeneous Markov processes. From system stability considerations -or convergence of the analytic solution- a closed expression involving control frequency is derived. According to simulation results, the analytical model predicts very well the limit of controllability of the system (lowest control frequency required for stable behavior) as well as all the steady-state parameters of interest. Additionally, the closed form of the solution allows a direct study of the complementary effect of control frequency with inventory, capacity and availability on system behavior. These results permit fast assessment of system-wide effects of operational control issues during the design of manufacturing systems.

Book Queuing Models for Multi Product Pull Type Inventory Systems

Download or read book Queuing Models for Multi Product Pull Type Inventory Systems written by Kumar Satyam and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Competitive pressures are forcing manufacturing companies to find new ways to provide a wide variety of products at reduced costs. Pull type material control strategies that make efficient use of available production capacities and optimize inventories could be very useful in improving factory operations. However, there is aneed for analytical tools that precisely model the operating characteristics of multi-product pull systems. Such models should not only provide reasonably accurate performance estimates butalso be amenable to rapid analysis of performance tradeoffs. This book presents an analytical approach to solve multi-product systems with pull type material control strategies. A state of the art queuing theory based approach to solve analytical models for multi-product pull systems is being discussed. A parametric decomposition based approach is used to analyze multi-product pull systems under different settings such as batch size constraints, multi-stage production, finite demand and raw material. The approach presented in this book has been found to be reasonably accurate even in realistic settings.

Book Engineering Production Control Strategies

Download or read book Engineering Production Control Strategies written by Christoph Karrer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-23 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifying and customizing suitable control strategies is a challenging task, especially when production systems have to cope with variable demands, forecast error, and unstable processes. The focus of this book lies on helping companies with complex and discrete production systems to tailor a production control strategy to their needs. Thereby, the mutual merits of “push” and “pull” systems are taken into account, leading to hybrid strategies. Consequently, the book addresses practitioners who are interested in looking behind the scenes and into the physics of production control. A real-life case study demonstrates the practical applicability of the presented framework.
