Book The Mediterranean Theater

Download or read book The Mediterranean Theater written by Adam Norman Lynde and published by Scholarly Resources, Incorporated. This book was released on 2004-05-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States and Britain's invasion of Iraq in March 2003 brought back for many Americans the memories of these two great nations' allied efforts in World War II. George W. Bush's conferences with Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair conjured images of Franklin Delano Roosevelt meeting with Churchill in 1941. This new book provides insight into relations between Britain and America and the two nations' joint planning and combined operations in the Mediterranean theater during World War II. The North African and Italian campaigns are often portrayed as of secondary importance to the Allied defeat of Nazi Germany. Yet, the role these campaigns played in resolving points of dispute between Britain and America's political and military leadership was instrumental in ensuring not merely the success of the Normandy invasion in 1944, but of the bloody and hard-fought campaigns in Northwest Europe of the year that followed. the area of operations where this relationship was first put to the test, and where conflict among Allied political and military interests was first evident. The origin and resolution of the disagreements that divided Britain and America's wartime leadership is examined by placing the story of the Anglo-American relationship within its broadest cultural and political as well as military context. The historiographical debates that have surrounded this campaign are also analyzed, debates as prone to disagreement and conflict as the Allied conduct of the campaign itself. The text begins by placing the political and military events of the late 1930s and early 1940s within the broader social and economic context of Britain and the United States. operations during the war. The invasion of North Africa, the campaign in Italy, operations against southern France, the collapse of axis power in the Balkans and Greece, and other aspects of the Mediterranean theater are analyzed. This book provides unique insights on relations between two great allies during the war by focusing on their joint efforts in the Mediterranean. It will fascinate all readers interested in World War II and the indelible mark the United States and Britain made on the military history of this period.

Book United States Army in WWII the Mediterranean Sicily and the Surrender of Italy

Download or read book United States Army in WWII the Mediterranean Sicily and the Surrender of Italy written by Albert N. Garland and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 1090 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: [Includes 17 maps and 113 illustrations] This volume, the second to be published in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations subseries, takes up where George F. Howe’s Northwest Africa: Seizing the Initiative in the West left off. It integrates the Sicilian Campaign with the complicated negotiations involved in the surrender of Italy. The Sicilian Campaign was as complex as the negotiations, and is equally instructive. On the Allied side it included American, British, and Canadian soldiers as well as some Tabors of Goums; major segments of the U.S. Army Air Forces and of the Royal Air Force; and substantial contingents of the U.S. Navy and the Royal Navy. Opposing the Allies were ground troops and air forces of Italy and Germany, and the Italian Navy. The fighting included a wide variety of operations: the largest amphibious assault of World War II; parachute jumps and air landings; extended overland marches; tank battles; precise and remarkably successful naval gunfire support of troops on shore; agonizing struggles for ridge tops; and extensive and skillful artillery support. Sicily was a testing ground for the U.S. soldier, fighting beside the more experienced troops of the British Eighth Army, and there the American soldier showed what he could do. The negotiations involved in Italy’s surrender were rivaled in complexity and delicacy only by those leading up to the Korean armistice. The relationship of tactical to diplomatic activity is one of the most instructive and interesting features of this volume. Military men were required to double as diplomats and to play both roles with skill.

Book Battle scarred and Dirty

Download or read book Battle scarred and Dirty written by Steven Thomas Barry and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the North African and Sicilian campaigns of World War II, the battalion leadership exercised by United States Regular Army officers provided the essential component that contributed to battlefield success and combat effectiveness despite deficiencies in equipment, organization, mobilization, and inadequate operational leadership. Essentially, without the Regular Army battalion leaders, US units could not have functioned tactically early in the war. For both Operations TORCH and HUSKY, the US Army did not possess the leadership or staffs at the corps level to consistently coordinate combined arms maneuver with air and sea power. The battalion leadership brought discipline, maturity, experience, and the ability to translate common operational guidance into tactical reality. Many US officers shared the same "old Army" skill sets in their early career. Across the Army in the 1930s, these officers developed familiarity with the systems and doctrine that would prove crucial in the combined arms operations of the Second World War. The battalion tactical leadership overcame lackluster operational and strategic guidance and other significant handicaps to execute the first Mediterranean theater of operations campaigns. Three sets of factors shaped this pivotal group of men. First, all of these officers were shaped by pre-war experiences. Professional military education, unit training exercises, and commissioning source formed the foundation of how the Army prepared these officers for leadership and combat. This group of officers shared many of the same personal factors that consistently provided sound leadership in North Africa and Sicily. While less tangible than institutional factors, the personal factors include bravery, calmness under fire, vigor, and common personality traits. Finally, the officers' deft use of doctrine, assigned equipment, mission-oriented orders, and their ability to overcome operational limitations translated into tactical combat effectiveness. The analysis of these three categories above determined that these battalion-level professional officers were the critical cogs for early Allied success in the Mediterranean theater of operations.
