Book Application of Manual Control Display Theory to the Development of Flight Director Systems for STOL Aircraft

Download or read book Application of Manual Control Display Theory to the Development of Flight Director Systems for STOL Aircraft written by Richard H. Klein and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report represents an application of pilot models and closed-loop system methods to the analysis and design of three-axis flight director systems for STOL aircraft in the landing approach mode. The basic principle is that there are effective flight director plus vehicle controlled element dynamics that are preferred from the standpoint of pilot response and system performance. This leads to requirements and analytical procedures which define how to select, weight, and equalize the potential feedbacks. A summary of the design procedure and estimates of the necessary feedback quantities (with their associated weighting and equalization), pilot dynamics, pilot commentary, and closed-loop system performance represent the output of the analytical procedure. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A six degree of freedom, fixed base simulation study of the use of a flight director by general aviation pilots in an instrument landing system approach was conducted. An autopilot command law was used to drive the flight director needles. Time histories of the pilot aircraft display system responses and standard deviations and means of the glide slope and localizer errors were obtained. The pilot aircraft display system responses with the flight director were very similar to the autopilot aircraft responses. Without the flight director, the pilot aircraft display system exhibited less damping than with the flight director. The sensitivity of the flight director command laws was judged to be about as high as it could be by the test subjects. Thus, further improvement in the pilot aircraft display system performance by increasing the gains in the command laws was precluded. Adams, J. J. Book Advances In Aircraft Flight Control

Download or read book Advances In Aircraft Flight Control written by M B Tischler and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-06-28 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a single comprehensive resource that reviews many of the current aircraft flight control programmes from the perspective of experienced practitioners directly involved in the projects. Each chapter discusses a specific aircraft flight programme covering the control system design considerations, control law architecture, simulation and analysis, flight test optimization and handling qualities evaluations. The programmes described have widely exploited modern interdisciplinary tools and techniques and the discussions include extensive flight test results. Many important `lessons learned' are included from the experience gained when design methods and requirements were tested and optimized in actual flight demonstration.

Book A Predictive Pilot Model for STOL Aircraft Landing

Download or read book A Predictive Pilot Model for STOL Aircraft Landing written by David L. Kleinman and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An optimal control approach has been used to model pilot performance during STOL flare and landing. The model is used to predict pilot landing performance for three STOL configurations, each having a different level of automatic control augmentation. Model predictions are compared with flight simulator data. It is concluded that the model can be effective design tool for studying analytically the effects of display modifications, different stability augmentation systems, and proposed changes in the landing area geometry.

Book Fixed base Simulation Study of Decoupled Controls During Approach and Landing of a STOL Transport Airplane

Download or read book Fixed base Simulation Study of Decoupled Controls During Approach and Landing of a STOL Transport Airplane written by G. Kimball Miller and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fixed-base visual simulation study has been conducted to evaluate the use of decoupled controls as a means for reducing pilot workload during approach and landing of an externally blown jet-flap short take-off and landing (STOL) transport. All six rigid-body degrees of freedom were employed with the aerodynamic characteristics based on wind-tunnel data. The primary piloting task was to use a flight director to capture and maintain a two-segment glide slope, with a closed-circuit television display of a STOL airport used during simulations of the flare and landing. The decoupled longitudinal controls used constant prefilter and feedback gains to provide steady-state decoupling of flight-path angle, pitch angle, and forward velocity. The pilots were enthusiastic about the decoupled longitudinal controls but believed the decoupled concept offered no significant advantage over conventional controls in the lateral mode.
