Book The coffee production and marketing in Ethiopia An analysis of challenges and opportunities

Download or read book The coffee production and marketing in Ethiopia An analysis of challenges and opportunities written by Abrham Gebreselassie and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-07-27 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 5 (Excellent), Szent István University (Institute of Regional Economics and Rural Development), course: Rural Development and Agribusiness, language: English, abstract: The general objective of this paper is to analyze the trends of coffee sector in Ethiopia in general. Furthermore it wants to generate baseline information on production and marketing systems of the selected study area in particular by concentrating on parameters like production, marketing, institutional and organizational support and challenges and opportunities. Currently, Ethiopia contributes 3.6 percent of the total value and 3 percent of the total quantity of coffee traded to the global market, which leads the country to be the 10th largest exporter of coffee in the world and the first exporter in Africa. 40% of the total coffee production of Ethiopia is exported, which earns 33% of the overall value of agricultural goods exported and 24% of the whole export value of the country. Over one-third of the population living in the rural areas and over 15 million populations sustain their livelihoods and participated in coffee production. There are around one million coffee growers in the country. Coffee has been an important commodity which has got greater attention by the government of Ethiopia. It is the first cash crop that the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX) started trading operations in April 2008 in order to advance coffee markets in the country. High costs and high risks of transaction were the features of agricultural markets in Ethiopia before 2008, with only one third of the production reaching the market. Besides, smallholder farmers have little information about the market which limits them to sell their final products at the nearby market, deal with good prices as well as minimizing their market risk. Coffee market incompetence chiefly affect the income of coffee farmers and discourage them in the process of coffee production and marketing which lead to a significantly decreases in the country’s foreign exchange. This suggests that it is very critical to study and monitor systematically the production and marketing systems in all coffee growing areas of the country for the sake of planning and designing suitable research and development interventions that are applicable to the specific systems.

Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2020 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, grade: 1, , course: Forest management, language: English, abstract: This study is aimed to assess the effects of population growth on forest resources exhibiting in Zaba village in Boloso Bombe Woreda and to suggest remedial solutions before the environment is getting worse and its serious outcome. Ethiopia is one of the countries where forest resources degradation exhibits primarily due to population explosion. The forest policy is also not said to be effective in forest policy regards. At present, it is facing a serious ecological problem triggered mainly by the fast growth of population which led to destructive nature of land resource uses involving deforestation even without leaving time space for regeneration of natural forests. The situation exposes the land to serious land degradation altering local environment and microclimate. To change this situation urgent natural resource management primarily forest management strategies intervention is required.

Book Annual income of small scale plantation by wood fuel production in Fagta Lekoma Awi Zone Amhara Ethiopia

Download or read book Annual income of small scale plantation by wood fuel production in Fagta Lekoma Awi Zone Amhara Ethiopia written by Mitku Alemu Mengistu and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, grade: 3.93, , course: forest economics and management, language: English, abstract: This study aims to examine the annual income contribution of wood fuel production from small - scale plantation forestry in Fagta Lekoma district of Amhara region, Ethiopia. Household surveys were conducted by following the snowball-sampling technique. The data analyzed by using STATA software and multiple linear regression model also employed to evaluate the contribution of wood fuel annual income from the total annual income of the households. About 9000 Ethiopian Birr (ETB) household income comes from charcoal selling which is the highest average annual income. The result of multiple linear regression analysis indicates that an increase in one unit (ETB) income from charcoal making leads to an increase in total annual income by 0.972 units (ETB). Annual income contribution of wood fuel production is the largest amount of income recorded followed by annual income from crop production. Plantation forestry plays a significant role not only economically but also by the provision of alternative livelihood options for households. Plantation forestry used as a means of soil reclamation as well as means of households’ income. Inaction and implementation of policies supporting plantation forestry sustain rural livelihood by increasing their adaptive potential for shock and stress by creating alternative means of livelihood.

Book Cash crops and food security

Download or read book Cash crops and food security written by Kuma, Tadesse and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the key questions in food policy debates in the last decades has been the role of cash cropping for achieving food security in low income countries. We revisit this question in the context of smallholder coffee production in Ethiopia. Using unique data collected by the authors on about 1,600 coffee farmers in the country, we find that coffee income improves food security, even after controlling for total income and other factors and after addressing the endogeneity of coffee income. Further analysis suggests that the pathway for achieving this improved food security is linked to being better able to smooth consumption across agricultural seasons. In contrast with food crops, coffee sales take place almost throughout the whole year, providing farmers with cash income also during the lean season.

Book Improving coffee productivity in Ethiopia The impact of a coffee tree rejuvenation training program on stumping

Download or read book Improving coffee productivity in Ethiopia The impact of a coffee tree rejuvenation training program on stumping written by Abate, Gashaw Tadesse and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coffee is Ethiopia’s most important export commodity, cultivated by over 6 million smallholder farmers in the country, and accounting for about one-third of the country’s commodity exports. While coffee production has increased over the last decade, coffee yields are low and several constraints to improved productivity remain. With two-three decades old and low-yielding coffee trees in particular, the sector cannot attain its full potential. In this paper, we assess the short-term impact of a coffee tree rejuvenation training program in Sidama on adoption rate and intensity of stumping – currently the best practice to revitalize ageing coffee trees and substantially improve their productivity. Using baseline and follow-up data and a difference-in-difference approach, we find that the adoption rate and intensity of stumping has increased by about threefold during the first year of the rejuvenation training intervention.

Book Ecophysiological Diversity of Wild Arabica Coffee Populations in Ethiopia

Download or read book Ecophysiological Diversity of Wild Arabica Coffee Populations in Ethiopia written by Taye Kufa Obso and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2006 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coffea arabica, one of the economically most important crops worldwide, occurs naturally in the undergrowth of montane rainforests of Ethiopia. The study provides the first detailed ecophysiological investigations of wild coffee populations. It demonstrates the inter- and intra-regional variability in phenotypic and hydrological characteristics of wild coffee. The results reveal very different strategies of wild coffee seedlings for coping with drought stress. The ecophysiological diversity shows the importance of Ethiopian wild coffee populations as gene pools for future breeding programs, and underlines the need for an in-situ conservation strategy. The study includes recommendations for coffee forest management and the use of wild arabica coffee in Ethiopia.
