Book Analysis of Supercritical Vapor Explosions Using Thermal Detonation Wave Theory

Download or read book Analysis of Supercritical Vapor Explosions Using Thermal Detonation Wave Theory written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of certain materials such as Al2O3 with water results in vapor explosions with very high (supercritical) pressures and propagation velocities. A quasi-steady state analysis of supercritical detonation in one-dimensional multiphase flow was applied to analyze experimental data of the KROTOS (26-30) set of experiments conducted at the Joint Research Center at Ispra, Italy. In this work we have applied a new method of solution which allows for partial fragmentation of the fuel in the shock adiabatic thermodynamic model. This method uses known experiment values of the shock pressure and propagation velocity to estimate the initial mixing conditions of the experiment. The fuel and coolant were both considered compressible in this analysis. In KROTOS 26, 28, 29, and 30 the measured values of the shock pressure by the experiment were found to be higher than 25, 50, 100, and 100 Mpa respectively. Using the above data for the wave velocity and our best estimate for the values of the pressure, the predicted minimum values of the fragmented mass of the fuel were found to be 0.026. 0.04, 0.057, and 0.068 kg respectively. The predicted values of the work output corresponding to the above fragmented masses of the fuel were found to be 40, 84, 126, and 150 kJ respectively, with predicted initial void fractions of 112%, 12.5%, 8%, and 6% respectively.

Book Multiphase Flow Dynamics 1

Download or read book Multiphase Flow Dynamics 1 written by Nikolay Ivanov Kolev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-05 with total page 776 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multi-phase flows are part of our natural environment such as tornadoes, typhoons, air and water pollution and volcanic activities as well as part of industrial technology such as power plants, combustion engines, propulsion systems, or chemical and biological industry. The industrial use of multi-phase systems requires analytical and numerical strategies for predicting their behavior. In its third extended edition this monograph contains theory, methods and practical experience for describing complex transient multi-phase processes in arbitrary geometrical configurations, providing a systematic presentation of the theory and practice of numerical multi-phase fluid dynamics. In the present first volume the fundamentals of multiphase dynamics are provided. This third edition includes various updates, extensions and improvements in all book chapters.

Download or read book Mechanisms of Vapor Explosions Technical Annual Report October 1976 July 1977 LMFBR written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently two principal concepts dominate the fuel-coolant interaction field. One is the Fauske theory of spontaneous nucleation and the other is the Board-Hall theory of thermal detonation waves. Considerable differences of opinion exist with respect to both of these theories, and it is important to determine to what extent these ideas are valid, and, if so, whether they can be reconciled. Experimental and theoretical results are compared.

Book Dynamic Aspects of Explosion Phenomena

Download or read book Dynamic Aspects of Explosion Phenomena written by A. L. Kuhl and published by AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics). This book was released on 1993 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four companion volumes on Dynamic Aspects of Detonations and Explosion Phenomena and Dynamics of Gaseous and Heterogeneous Combustion and Reactive Systems present 111 of the 230 papers given at the Thirteenth International Colloquium on the Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems held in Nagoya, Japan. These books embrace the topics of explosions, detonations, shock phenomena, and reactive flow, as well as the gasdynamic aspects of nonsteady flow in combustion systems, the fluid mechanics aspects of combustion, and diagnostic techniques. Two of the volumes, Dynamics of Gaseous Combustion (Vol. 151) and Dynamics of Heterogeneous Combustion and Reacting Systems (Vol. 152), focus on the processes of coupling the exothermic energy release with the fluid mechanics occurring in various combination processes. The other two volumes, Dynamic Aspects of Detonations (Vol. 153) and Dynamic Aspects of Explosion Phenomena (Vol. 154), address the rate processes of energy deposition in a compressible medium and the concurrent nonsteady flow as it typically occurs in explosion phenomena.

Book Vapor Explosions in Superheated Liquids and Fundamental Studies of the Physics of Detonation

Download or read book Vapor Explosions in Superheated Liquids and Fundamental Studies of the Physics of Detonation written by G. R. Fowles and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experimental was entirely devoted to developing the experimental technique. In this technique superheated states are produced by sudden adiabatic depressurization of fluids whose initial state lies on the liquid-vapor co-existence curve, as is done on a more modest scale in bubble chambers. The technique is still being perfected and although it appears to be feasible and nearly functional, no data have yet been taken. Significant degrees of superheat have been obtained for several milliseconds. The theoretical phase, on shock and detonation instabilities, appears to have successfully shown the connection between transverse wave instabilities and the observed three-dimensional structure of detonation waves. It indicates that such transverse wave structure might be expected in all detonation waves and that it is caused by a modified form of the transverse wave instability predicted for shocks in inert materials. Originator supplied key words include: Lasers, Vapor explosions, Superheated liquids, Detonation waxes, and Shock waves.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The well-known formula for the flat detonation wave velocity derived from the Hugoniot system of equations faces difficulties, if being applied to a spherical reactor. A similar formula has been obtained in the framework of the theory of explosion in reacting gas media with the use of a special model describing the transition of an explosive wave in the detonation. The derived formula is very simple, being also more suitable for studying the limiting processes of volume detonation. The conditions for the transition of a shock wave to a detonation wave are studied. Initial detonation conditions required for fast chemical reactions to take place at the front of a spherical explosive wave have been determined. A simple relation describing the critical detonation temperature for various pressures in the hydrogen-oxygen mixture was obtained. Using the known formulas for a shock transition, the critical temperature was coupled with the initial conditions in a static environment, such as the pressure, temperature, and hydrogen content in the mixture.
