Download or read book Analysis of Successions in Chinese Family Firms After 1978 written by Sandra Li and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many family businesses in China evolved after 1978 taking the opportunities of the opening reform implemented by the government to build their own businesses. About 40 years later, many of these family businesses face the issue of succession. As family business succession in China is a new phenomenon, research is this field is fragmented and many untouched spots give room for new findings. In western studies many succession frameworks have been developed in order to understand succession processes and facilitate succession for many family firms, however, in the Chinese context there is yet no existing framework or process. Therefore, this study analyses the succession processes of Chinese family firms after 1978. A case study approach alongside with expert interviews are used to draw conclusions on succession processes in Chinese family firms. Findings show that in China western frameworks do not apply, nor have Chinese firms developed their own consistent processes yet. Additionally, the case studies reveal a shift from traditional Confucian values that have determined family and business life for centuries to a more modern approach to family business succession. There are major changes in female involvement, family involvement and acceptance of external managers in Chinese family businesses.

Book excerpt: In family firms, CEO successions are key events for firms' sustainable development, and different types of successors may influence firm behaviors in significantly different ways. To respond to the mixed results of extant studies and unveil the underlying effects, this study adopted a socioemotional wealth perspective. The hypothesis was that family firms with internal succession are more likely to be involved in behaviors that could increase the socioemotional wealth of the family, including corporate innovation, diversification strategies, and corporate philanthropy. Using data on Chinese publiclylisted family firms from 2008 to 2017, the above hypotheses were tested. Results largely showed support for the hypotheses. Multiple methods were employed to mitigate endogeneity problems and enhance robustness. Overall, this study contributes to the current research on family leadership by proving that internal family succession has a positive influence on preserving the socioemotional wealth of the family.

Book The Quality of Successors and Leadership Style of Chinese Family Businesses

Download or read book The Quality of Successors and Leadership Style of Chinese Family Businesses written by Puying Li and published by . This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese Family Businesses (CFBs) have experienced rapid development over the last twenty years. After the Reform and Opening proposed and enacted by Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping from 1978 on-wards, many Chinese began to establish their own companies. Nowadays, these enterprisers of CFBs are facing the dilemma of choosing new successors for when they retire. Therefore, the quality of the successors is obviously a key consideration for the future development of CFBs.The focus of this research has been on understanding transformational leadership and Chinese traditional leadership - guanxi leadership and paternalistic leadership, in order to explore what quality of successors is suitable for CFBs further development. The research used the Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA); this methodology required the author to interview enterprisers of CFBs. All five interviewees shared their leadership experience, guanxi leadership, paternalistic leadership, transformational leadership and female leadership with the author. Their rich leadership experience facilitated the author's analysis of the usefulness of traditional leadership for CFBs, and the factors affecting succession issues for CFBs.

Book Chinese Family Business and the Equal Inheritance System

Download or read book Chinese Family Business and the Equal Inheritance System written by Victor Zheng and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-17 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book disputes the traditional argument that the equal inheritance system hinders the growth of Chinese family business, approaching this not only in terms of economic capital, but also in terms of human capital such as education and leadership, and social networks. Zheng argues that most of the family business patriarchs only focus on the passing on economic capital, but give little attention to human capital and social capital when the come to the stage to transfer control to the next level. It further elaborates that the equal inheritance system itself isn’t the destructive force that weakens family business competitiveness, but can assist economic development by generating dynamism and capital. Based on extensive primary research, the work discusses how equal division encourages sibling comparison, analysing how such comparisons initially generate stress and anxiety but will ultimately galvanize competition, benefiting the business. The author also assesses how family division can offer initial economic human and social capitals that can motivate siblings to start their own businesses and be free from the subjugation sometimes associated with a family firm. Through the evaluation of these issues the book argues that the equal inheritance system can be regarded as the origin of the self-employment mentality, which not only fosters the growth of Chinese family business by plays crucial role in promoting economic development. Providing a valuable contribution to the field, this work will be of great interest to all scholars of Chinese and Asian business.

Book Family Business in China Volume 1

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike other economies, family businesses in China are greatly affected by the derived Confucian culture, excessive marketization, as well as the seemingly endless institutional supervision by a transitional Chinese government. China has a strong historical legacy, devoted to patriarchal values and strong family-centered traditions. This volume explores the social foundations and historical legacies of families, business families, and family businesses in China. It begins with an overview of a household, family, and clan in ancient China before an examination of the economic, social, and cultural functions that the family system served in Ancient China as well as the four unique features that distinguish the family system in ancient China from those in western societies. It later discusses the evolution of the family system and the rise of family business before the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Finally, it evaluates the family system before and after the “Open-up and Reform” in 1978. This interdisciplinary work, incorporating sociological, anthropological, and institutional contexts pertaining to China, offers researchers the first advanced perspective of the development of family firms in China.

Book Succession Planning in Chinese Family owned Businesses in Hong Kong

Download or read book Succession Planning in Chinese Family owned Businesses in Hong Kong written by Ling Ming Chan and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of the first studies to engage with succession issues amongst Chinese family-owned businesses (FOBs) in Hong Kong. The study is based on a survey conducted amongst FOBs in the Federation of Hong Kong Industries or The Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong, and also on five in-depth case studies conducted to explore the issues that were revealed in the survey in detail. The study builds cumulatively on previous work on succession in family owned businesses, and identifies eight Critical Success Factors and five Successor Selection Criteria that Chinese founders and successors in family businesses in Hong Kong agree on. The eight Critical Success Factors are: capability and contribution of the successor in the family business; personal characteristics of founder; successor motivated to lead the family business and agrees with the company direction; business environment and the family business scenario to develop the successor in different scenario; fair and planned shareholder changed parallel transfer of power; relationship between founder and successor; corporate culture and organizational structure; and other participants' view on the management transition of the offspring-successor. Furthermore, the study identifies five Successor Selection Criteria for founders and successors of family businesses in Hong Kong and compares findings with a study using the same framework conducted in Canada and India. The five criteria are: management skills and experience, interpersonal relationships and networks among stakeholders; trust and relationship among family members and owner-manager; self-confidence and commitment of the successor in the family business; family standing and share ownership; and business and working experience of the successor. These are evaluated in terms of their concordance with the non-Chinese FOB literatures, and with the cases studies of Chinese FOBs described in this study. The Thesis concludes that succession issues are even more important for family-owned businesses in Hong Kong than elsewhere, and that insofar as family-owned firms solve their succession problems they will continue to make a vital contribution to business worldwide.

Issues of intergenerational succession, specifically, the third generation and how these small and medium sized businesses managed to transfer leadership and ownership to family members successfully are discussed lengthily in this paper. The research focused on succession patterns and how third generation owner managers managed to remain successful and self-sustaining over the years while operating in niche markets. Nine small and medium sized third generation family owned businesses under trading, service and manufacturing industry in Metro Manila were observed and interviewed.
