Key Features Helps readers understand, interpret, and use standardized test scores to improve classroom instruction: Several specific examples are given for interpreting test scores and developing a plan to revise instruction based on those results. Offers activities for application and reflection: Follow-up activities and discussion points are provided for experienced and preservice teachers across K-12 grade levels. Presents successful case studies: The author includes interviews with classroom teachers, building administrators, and district-level administrators who have successfully engaged in a process of incorporating test scores into decision making. Intended Audience This is an excellent supplementary text for any course that incorporates standardized testing as a topic, including but not limited to courses in Classroom Assessment, Educational Psychology, Content Methods, Reading, Special Education, Curriculum, Literacy, Administration, The Principalship, and The Superintendency.

Book Improved Test Scores Attitudes and Behaviors in America s Schools

Download or read book Improved Test Scores Attitudes and Behaviors in America s Schools written by Thomas C. DeBello and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-10-30 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education is a profession in which billions of federal dollars have been spent to reduce academic underachievement—particularly for minority children from poverty homes. Few funded programs have reduced failure on standardized achievement tests. Despite either repetition or innovation, most children who fail do not perform substantially better the next time around. On the other hand, practitioners who have used the Dunn and Dunn learning-styles approaches have reported statistically higher standardized achievement test scores among average, poorly achieving, and special education students. This book is based on the practical, diverse experiences of more than thirty different supervisors throughout the United States. Representing a variety of urban and suburban locations with diverse student populations, each supervisor was able to obtain significantly higher standardized achievement test scores for his or her student populations.

Book The Myth of Benchmark Testing

Download or read book The Myth of Benchmark Testing written by Karen D. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation examines the use of benchmark tests in Texas public schools through a quantitative study of 100 school districts using path analysis. The study examines the relationship between a district's descriptive characteristics and the number of benchmark tests they require. Districts' descriptive characteristics include district type, accountability status, percent of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students, percent of economically disadvantaged students, and percent students of color. The number of benchmark tests a district required was also compared to the percent of students passing the state required 8th grade math and reading assessments. This study found districts with certain characteristics and student populations were more likely to use benchmark tests. This study also found a small, insignificant, and negative relationship between the number of benchmark tests a district required and the percent of students passing the state tests. This suggests the greater the number of benchmark tests required by a district, the lower the percentage of students passing the state test. The results of the study are examined through the lens of isomorphism and rational myths in public education are addressed.

Book Understanding Out of Level Testing in Local Schools

Download or read book Understanding Out of Level Testing in Local Schools written by Jane E. Minnema and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is an accounting of a second case study of large-scale assessment practices in a local educational agency where students with disabilities were administered the state's standards-based tests out of level. The first report (Minnema et al., 2004a) provided the results from the first case study conducted in another school district in another state. The overall purpose of the research project is to describe the specific effects of testing students with disabilities out of level as well as teachers' and students' perceptions of these effects. To study the implementation of an out-of-level testing policy at the local school level, the following research questions were posed: (1) What are the instructional effects on students with disabilities who are tested out of level in statewide assessments? (2) What are teachers' learning expectations for students with disabilities who are tested out of level? (3) How are students with disabilities selected for an out-of-level test? (4) How do students and their parents perceive out of level testing? A mixed methods approach to implementing the case study where a "case" was defined as a school district was employed. Although the school district was relatively large, limited resources constrained the data collection process to a limited number of participating schools. Two district-level personnel, a special education director, and a special education coordinator, selected and recruited two middle schools and two high schools to participate in the study. No elementary schools participated because this state did not administer out-of-level state tests to elementary-aged students. At the school and district levels, narrative and numeric data through interview, survey, and document review data collection techniques were collected. After data collection had been initiated, it was learned that the school district was under a decree from the U.S. Office for Civil Rights to provide instruction to all students at the same pace in every general educational classroom. In other words, all students, including students with disabilities who were tested out of level, progressed in curriculum in all content areas at the same pace whether or not the necessary information had been learned. Rather than collecting interview data to answer the research question about the instructional effects of out-of-level testing, "scenarios" that described typical students in their classrooms based on conversations with general and special education teachers were created. Teachers were also asked to describe special education instruction as it was delivered in their school. These discussions became part of the interviews, so were tape recorded and transcribed. These data were analyzed for information about the instruction and learning of students with disabilities who were tested out of level. Findings are organized according to the three data collection activities employed for this case study. The IEP document review is presented first with the scenario results presented second. Face-to-face interview results are presented third. While conclusions are derived from one school district where data in four schools was collected, discussion is general enough so that educators and policymakers from other school districts and states are challenged to consider whether these findings are true for their circumstances also.
