Book Analysis of Speech of People with Parkinson s Disease

Download or read book Analysis of Speech of People with Parkinson s Disease written by Juan Rafael Orozco-Arroyave and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of speech of people with Parkinson's disease is an interesting and highly relevant topic that has attracted the research community during several years. The advances in digital signal processing and pattern recognition have motivated the research community to work on the development of computational tools to perform automatic analysis of speech. Most of the contributions on this topic are focused on sustained phonation of vowels and only consider recordings of one language. This thesis addresses two problems considering recordings of sustained phonations of vowels and continuous speech signals: (1) the automatic classification of Parkinson's patients vs. healthy speakers, and (2) the prediction of the neurological state of the patients according to the motor section of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). Recordings of three languages are considered: Spanish, German, and Czech. German and Czech data were provided by other researchers, and Spanish data were recorded in Medellin, Colombia, during the development of this work. Besides the classical approaches to assess pathological speech, a new method to model articulation deficits of Parkinson's patients is proposed. This new articulation modeling approach shows to be more accurate and robust than others to discriminate between Parkinson's patients and healthy speakers in the three considered languages.

Book Analysis of Pathological Speech Signals

Download or read book Analysis of Pathological Speech Signals written by Tomás Arias-Vergara and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the automatic analysis of speech disorders resulting from a clinical condition (Parkinson's disease and hearing loss) or the natural aging process. For Parkinson's disease, the progression of speech symptoms is evaluated by considering speech recordings captured in the short-term (4 months) and long-term (5 years). Machine learning methods are used to perform three tasks: (1) automatic classification of patients vs. healthy speakers. (2) regression analysis to predict the dysarthria level and neurological state. (3) speaker embeddings to analyze the progression of the speech symptoms over time. For hearing loss, automatic acoustic analysis is performed to evaluate whether the duration and onset of deafness (before or after speech acquisition) influence the speech production of cochlear implant users. Additionally, articulation, prosody, and phonemic analyses show that cochlear implant users present altered speech production even after hearing rehabilitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parkinson's Disease has traditionally been seen as a movement disorder, and diagnosed by the development of tremor. However, we are beginning to understand that the disease manifests itself in many ways, and that earlier diagnosis might be possible through non-tremor symptoms. This textbook aims to tell the full story of non-motor and non-dopaminergic features of Parkinson's Disease.

Download or read book Communication and Swallowing in Parkinson Disease written by Deborah Theodoros and published by Plural Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05-20 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous books have been written on various medical aspects of Parkinson's Disease. Until now, however, there has not been published a text which focuses specifically on the debilitating speech, cognitive-linguistic, and swallowing disorders associated with this disease. The current body of literature in the field of speech pathology pertaining to the description, assessment, and management of the communication and swallowing difficulties experienced by people with Parkinson's Disease is extensive. However, the majority of this literature is published in research journal article format, or as individual book chapters in various books. The first of its kind, Communication and Swallowing Disorders in Parkinson's Disease condenses and organizes this information into an accessible format in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of these disorders and their management in this clinical population.

Book An Acoustic Analysis of Speech Rate Control Procedures in Parkinson s Disease microform

Download or read book An Acoustic Analysis of Speech Rate Control Procedures in Parkinson s Disease microform written by Lisa Marie Odlozinski and published by National Library of Canada = Bibliothèque nationale du Canada. This book was released on 1998 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to examine the effect of four rate control procedures on speech rate in Parkinson's Disease (PD) and normal subjects. Utterance duration of a target phrase across fast and slow speaking conditions was measured during the following rate control procedures: magnitude production, delayed auditory feedback, computerized rhythmic pacing, and metronome pacing. The main findings were that PD subjects produced a faster rate of speech than normals during the slowest speech conditions of magnitude production, thereby underestimating the scaling of their speech at the slowest end of the continuum. In addition, it was found that PD subjects were more variable than normals during the slowest speech rate conditions of each rate control procedure. Furthermore, during the visuomotor speech task of the computerized rhythmic pacing procedure, PD subjects produced more variable speech rates. These results appear to be in general agreement with previous studies of speech rate in patients with PD.

Research Anthology on Diagnosing and Treating Neurocognitive Disorders examines the treatment, diagnosis, prevention, and therapeutic and technological interventions of neurodegenerative disorders. It also describes programs and strategies that professional and family caregivers can implement to engage and improve the quality of life of persons suffering from cognitive impairment. Highlighting a range of topics such as dementia, subjective wellbeing, and cognitive decline, this publication is an ideal reference source for speech pathologists, social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, pediatricians, researchers, clinicians, and academicians seeking coverage on neurocognitive disorder identification and strategies for clinician support and therapies.
