Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This diverse collection of research articles is united by the enormous power of modern molecular genetics. Every author accomplished two objectives: (1) making the field and the research described accessible to a large audience and (2) explaining fully the genetic tools and approaches that were used in the research. One fact stands out - the importance of a genetic approach to addressing a problem. I encourage you to read several chapters. You will feel the excitement of the scientists, and you will learn about an area of research with which you may not be familiar. Perhaps most importantly, you will understand the genetic approaches; and you will appreciate their importance to the research.

Book Protein Homeostasis

Download or read book Protein Homeostasis written by Richard I. Morimoto and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proper folding of proteins is crucial for cell function. Chaperones and enzymes that post-translationally modify newly synthesized proteins help ensure that proteins fold correctly, and the unfolded protein response functions as a homeostatic mechanism that removes misfolded proteins when cells are stressed. This book covers the entire spectrum of proteostasis in healthy cells and the diseases that result when control of protein production, protein folding, and protein degradation goes awry.

Book Characterisation of the yeast RNA helicase Prp43

Download or read book Characterisation of the yeast RNA helicase Prp43 written by Annika Heininger and published by Göttingen University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RNA helicases have many important roles in cell metabolism and are involved in numerous pathways, e.g. translation, pre-mRNA splicing and biogenesis. Interestingly, an increasing number of RNA helicases have been shown to be required for more than one cellular pathway. Therefore, protein cofactors have been suggested to recruit multifunctional RNA helicases to their substrates and regulate their activity. The best characterised family of helicase cofactors are G-patch proteins, which all contain a glycine-riche domain. This work focuses on the characterisation of the yeast RNA helicase Prp43 and its G-patch protein cofactors. Additionally, a new G-patch protein cofactor of Prp43 was identified and characterised. Together, the data suggest that protein cofactors can regulate the distribution and activity of RNA helicases in different pathways.

Book excerpt: Mitochondrial Genomics and Proteomics Protocols offers a broad collection of methods for studying the molecular biology, function, and features of mitochondria. In the past decade, mitochondrial research has elucidated the important influence of mitochondrial processes on integral cell processes such as apoptosis and cellular aging. This practical guide presents a wide spectrum of mitochondrial methods, each written by specialists with solid experience and intended for implementation by novice and expert researchers alike. Part I introduces major experimental model systems and discusses their specific advantages and limitations for functional analysis of mitochondria. The concise overview of general properties of mitochondrial systems is supplemented by detailed protocols for cultivation of model organisms. Parts II-VI comprise a robust collection of protocols for studying different molecular aspects of mitochondrial functions including: genetics and microbiology, biochemistry, physiology, dynamics and morphology, and functional genomics. Emphasis is placed on new and emerging topics in mitochondrial study, such as the examination of apoptotic effects, fusion and fission of mitochondria, and proteome and transcriptome analysis.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-10-26
  • ISBN : 364222380X
  • Pages : 481 pages

Download or read book Organelle Genetics written by Charles E. Bullerwell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-26 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mitochondria and chloroplasts are eukaryotic organelles that evolved from bacterial ancestors and harbor their own genomes. The gene products of these genomes work in concert with those of the nuclear genome to ensure proper organelle metabolism and biogenesis. This book explores the forces that have shaped the evolution of organelle genomes and the expression of the genes encoded by them. Some striking examples of trends in organelle evolution explored here are the reduction in genome size and gene coding content observed in most lineages, the complete loss of organelle DNA in certain lineages, and the unusual modes of gene expression that have emerged, such as the extensive and essential mRNA editing that occurs in plant mitochondria and chloroplasts. This book places particular emphasis on the current techniques used to study the evolution of organelle genomes and gene expression.
