Of specific concern were methods of controlling temperature and voltage of oscillator units. Temperature control was accomplished by a large crystal oven, modified to hold several transistorized oscillator units. Temperature was meassured by a mercury thermometer calibrated to 0.01 C. Constant voltage for the oscillator units was supplied by transistorized regulated power supplies. Accurate voltage measurements were made with a sensitive dc microvoltmeter arranged to measure the voltage difference between the power supply and a reference battery. Of the 32 transistorized oscillator units constructed, 9 are described. Short-term frequency instabilities of less than 1 part in 10 to the 8th power were possible t frequencies from 100 to about 200 mc. Comparable stabilities at higher frequencies were possible through the use of frequency multipliers. Three tunnel-diode oscillator units, 4 rf amplifier units, 5 frequency multiplier units, and 1 combination amplifier-multiplier unit are described. (Author).

Today, millions of them are made every year, covering a range of frequencies from a few Kilohertz to several hundred Mega hertz and a range of stabilities from a fraction of one percent to a few parts in ten to the thirteenth, with most of them, by far, still in the range of several tens of parts per million.Their major application has long been the stabilization of fre quencies in transmitters and receivers, and indeed, the utilization of the frequency spectrum would be in utter chaos, and the communication systems as we know them today unthinkable,'without crystal oscillators. With the need to accommodate ever increasing numbers of users in a limited spectrum space, this traditional application will continue to grow for the fore seeable future, and ever tighter tolerances will have to be met by an ever larger percentage of these devices.

His heuristic model without mathematical proof is almost universally accepted. However, it entails a c- cuit specific noise factor that is not known a priori and so is not predictive. In this work, we attempt to address the topic of oscillator design from a diff- ent perspective. By introducing a new paradigm that accurately captures the subtleties of phase noise we try to answer the question: 'why do oscillators behave in a particular way?' and 'what can be done to build an optimum design?' It is also hoped that the paradigm is useful in other areas of circuit design such as frequency synthesis and clock recovery. In Chapter 1, a general introduction and motivation to the subject is presented. Chapter 2 summarizes the fundamentals of phase noise and timing jitter and discusses earlier works on oscillator's phase noise analysis. Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 analyze the physical mechanisms behind phase noise generation in current-biased and Colpitts oscillators. Chapter 5 discusses design trade-offs and new techniques in LC oscillator design that allows optimal design. Chapter 6 and Chapter 7 discuss a topic that is typically ignored in oscillator design. That is flicker noise in LC oscillators. Finally, Chapter 8 is dedicated to the complete analysis of the role of varactors both in tuning and AM-FM noise conversion.

Existing literature is dedicated mainly to single oscillators, and is strongly biased towards LC oscillators. This book is devoted to quadrature oscillatorsand presents adetailed comparative study ofLC and RCosc- lators, both at architectural and at circuit levels. It is shown that in cross-coupled RC oscillators both the quadrature error and phase-noise are reduced, whereas in LC - cillators the coupling decreases the quadrature error, but increases the phase-noise. Thus, quadrature RC oscillators can be a practical alternative to LC oscillators, - pecially when area and cost are to be minimized. The main topics of the book are: cross-coupled LC quasi-sinusoidal oscillators, cross-coupled RC relaxation oscillators, a quadrature RC oscillator-mixer, and t- integrator oscillators. The effect of mismatches on the phase-error and the pha- noise are thoroughly investigated. The book includes many experimental results, obtained from different integrated circuit prototypes, in the GHz range. A structured design approach is followed: a technology independent study, with ideal blocks, is performed initially, and then the circuit level design is addressed. Book excerpt: A new approach is described for the desiga of HF/VHF crystal-controlled frequency sources exhibiting theoretical short-term stability unattainable through the use of conventional quartz oscillator design. The signal generator design uses the concept of AFC stabilization of a conventional quartz oscillator (VCXO) by means of a crystal-controlled highly selective active frequency reference. The AFC reference is a phase-shift type frequency discriminator that employs a product detector and an active Q-multiplied quartz crystal resonator. The extremely selective transmission response, large group delay, and power gain exhibited by the resonator, together with resonator phase noise levels comparable to that exhibited by the oscillator-maintaining circuit, provide the principal means for prediction of superior output signal spectral purity. Models of the resonators have been designed and constructed at 30 and 80 MHz, exhibiting 3-dB bandwidths of 30 and 160 Hz, respectively. Based on actual measurement of VHF Q-multiplied crystal resonator performance characteristics, approximately 16 dB improvement in VHF crystal-controlled frequency source spectral purity at low and moderate modulation rates is possible, compared to that attainable using the best available VHF quartz oscillator circuit designs.
