Specifically, this research seeks to evaluate the rationales of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and Hamburg for bidding for Olympic Games, of DOSB delegates for selecting Hamburg as a candidate city, to determine the influence of previous failed bids on the bidding process, and to analyse the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the Hamburg bid. In doing so, a qualitative thematic content analysis is used to evaluate data from a range of sources, including media reports, bid documents, external reports and notes taken by the researcher at presentations about the bid by city officials in Hamburg.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine perceptions of local residents prior to the public referendum for the 2024 Hamburg Olympic bid and to assess their level of support for the bid. The representative survey conducted amongst Hamburg residents reveals a high level of support but also a strong perception of negative legacies. A comparison between the perceived positive and negative legacies shows that the negative legacies outweigh the positive legacies. When examining factors that influence support, statistical analysis reveals the perception of positive legacies as the strongest predictor of support. The survey also indicates that residents attach great importance to the costs of the Games and feel no personal benefit from hosting them. The findings suggest that Games organizers and authorities should mostly rely on positive legacies while negative legacies ought to be mitigated.

Book excerpt: In 2013 and 2014, some of Massachusetts' wealthiest and most powerful individuals hatched an audacious plan to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to Boston. Like their counterparts in cities around the world, Boston's Olympic boosters promised political leaders, taxpayers, and the media that the Games would deliver incalculable benefits and require little financial support from the public. Yet these advocates refused to share the details of their bid and only grudgingly admitted, when pressed, that their plan called for billions of dollars in construction of unneeded venues. To win the bid, the public would have to guarantee taxpayer funds to cover cost overruns, which have plagued all modern Olympic Games. The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) chose Boston 2024's bid over that of other American cities in January 2015-and for a time it seemed inevitable that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) would award the Games to Boston 2024. No Boston Olympics is the story of how an ad hoc, underfunded group of diverse and engaged citizens joined together to challenge and ultimately derail Boston's boosters, the USOC, and the IOC. Book excerpt: This study used the opportunity to conduct a survey with a contingent valuation method scenario in the weeks prior to an actual referendum on bidding for the 2024 Olympic Summer Games in Hamburg. Only 41.2% of respondents planned to vote favorably and 30.1% reported a positive willingness-to-pay. We allowed respondents to state the institution they would give the money to ensure it is wisely spent. The preferred institutions were a foundation and an account in trust. The findings indicate that individual voters have their own complex utility function of costs and benefits which should be considered by public officials.

I will argue that the deepening crisis of physical inactivity around the globe, growing world tensions and other challenges make the realization of those aspirations more urgent than ever, while the recent growth and consolidation of the Olympic Movement and the development of more interventionist approaches to social development suggest that the very definition of Olympism should be further elaborated.. In particular, I will argue that the Olympic Movement should strengthen its efforts to enhance 'sport for all', the health and well-being of athletes, the rights of athletes, intercultural education among sport participants, and the rights of expression at the time of Olympic Games.

Book excerpt: The International Olympic Committee announced on the 6th July 2005 that the Games of the 30th Olympiad in 2012 will take place in the city of London. Three years later, a lot of preparation work has already been done to get London ready for hosting the world’s most prestigious sporting occasion. Over 192 buildings have been demolished, one million cubic metres of soil excavated, two six kilometer tunnels and 200km of cabling are completed, and most of the contractors for the new sporting facilities are appointed. The Olympic Park will be at the centre of this large development project and spans two million square metres of the Lower Lea Valley in East London. Most of the new build venues and sporting facilities will be sited here; amongst them are the two flagship venues: the Olympic Stadium and the Aquatics Centre. The construction and operation of these sports facilities for the Games will be undertaken by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG). The delivery of the venues in time, within budget and to the required standard, however, is the responsibility of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA). The ODA is a non-departmental public body and acts in essence as the delivery organisation for all the construction activity. In the Pre-Olympic phase (2005- 2011) the construction of the Olympic venues will be at the centre of public attention, and scrutiny. Construction industry practices will be placed under the microscope in the time leading up to the Games, especially the ODA’s developed and introduced strategy for procuring the infrastructure. This study aims to determine whether the procurement strategies chosen by the ODA are the right choice for delivering the two main venues in the Olympic Park in time, on budget and to the required quality. In order to answer this question, the approach of this study is to undertake extensive research in the subject area of construction procurement and to identify best practice in making procurement decisions for a project. In particular, the procurement strategies chosen by the ODA will be researched and their shortcomings identified. Based on this theoretical framework, the author will be able to undertake a systematic analysis of the decisions made by the ODA to procure the two most prestigious venues in the Olympic Park. As a main part of this analysis the author will conduct semistructured interviews with key people involved in the Olympics and with experts of MSc Management in Construction - the industry.
