Elle consiste à modéliser sous une forme matricielle un ensemble de liaisons qualitatives entre phénomènes. L'appliquer ici à l'étude de relations causales entre tendances du changement macor-social sera l'occasion de poser des problèmes théoriques d'ensemble. Comment dégager la structure de ces liaisons ? Peut-on, malgré de nombreuses circularités, repérer et hiérarchiser les causes ou effets indirects, et de ce fait souvent inattendus, d'une évolution ? En fin de compte, comment progresser dans la réduction de la complexité. Répondre à ces questions suppose de délimiter le statut épistémologique de la causalité et de préciser les particularités de la méthode et des techniques d'analyse. Pour ce faire, la matrice liant les 60 tendances de transformation de la société française présentées par Louis Dirn (La société française en tendances, PUF, coll. " Sociologie d'aujourd'hui ", 1990) servira de cadre de référence. Plusieurs diagnostics structuraux sur le changement social pourront ainsi être formulés.
