Book Review of the Final Draft Analysis of Supplemental Treatment Approaches of Low Activity Waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation

Download or read book Review of the Final Draft Analysis of Supplemental Treatment Approaches of Low Activity Waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1943, as part of the Manhattan Project, the Hanford Nuclear Reservation was established with the mission to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons. During 45 years of operations, the Hanford Site produced about 67 metric tonnes of plutoniumâ€"approximately two-thirds of the nation's stockpile. Production processes generated radioactive and other hazardous wastes and resulted in airborne, surface, subsurface, and groundwater contamination. Presently, 177 underground tanks contain collectively about 210 million liters (about 56 million gallons) of waste. The chemically complex and diverse waste is difficult to manage and dispose of safely. Section 3134 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017 calls for a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) to conduct an analysis of approaches for treating the portion of low-activity waste at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation intended for supplemental treatment. The third of four, this report provides an overall assessment of the FFRDC team's final draft report, dated April 5, 2019.

Book Systems Analysis and Systems Engineering in Environmental Remediation Programs at the Department of Energy Hanford Site

Download or read book Systems Analysis and Systems Engineering in Environmental Remediation Programs at the Department of Energy Hanford Site written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-08-21 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of systems engineering is to organize information and knowledge to assist those who manage, direct, and control the planning, development, production, and operation of the systems necessary to accomplish a given mission. However, this purpose can be compromised or defeated if information production and organization becomes an end unto itself. Systems engineering was developed to help resolve the engineering problems that are encountered when attempting to develop and implement large and complex engineering projects. It depends upon integrated program planning and development, disciplined and consistent allocation and control of design and development requirements and functions, and systems analysis. The key thesis of this report is that proper application of systems analysis and systems engineering will improve the management of tank wastes at the Hanford Site significantly, thereby leading to reduced life cycle costs for remediation and more effective risk reduction. The committee recognizes that evidence for cost savings from application of systems engineering has not been demonstrated yet.

Book Design and Analysis of Liquid Hydrogen Technologies

Download or read book Design and Analysis of Liquid Hydrogen Technologies written by Ahmad K. Sleiti and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design and Analysis of Liquid Hydrogen Technologies: Liquefaction, Storage and Distribution offers readers a comprehensive guide to the development, analysis, design, and assessment methodologies for liquid hydrogen. From the fundamentals to the latest developments and current applications, the book provides an extensive and systematic discussion of the design, simulation, and techno-economic analysis methodologies supported by practical examples, verified codes, and innovative process designs. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the liquid hydrogen economy, followed by detailed advanced thermoeconomic, exergoeconomic, optimization, and dynamic simulation models that are essential for the assessment of the current and future LH2 technologies. The authors then identify current technological challenges and propose innovative solutions for LH2 technologies, with a focus on the liquefaction plants and storage facilities. In-depth analyses are provided of the reliability, safety, and environmental impacts of the different stages of the LH2 supply, transportation, regasification, and distribution. To improve the economic feasibility of LH2 plants, recent advanced energy-integrated systems are discussed. Potential market applications are considered, and detailed techno-economic assessments are provided. Finally, the book critically evaluates the future directions and prospective development of liquid hydrogen technologies, regulations, safety standards, and new markets for liquid hydrogen applications. Bringing together the latest information, Design and Analysis of Liquid Hydrogen Technologies: Liquefaction, Storage and Distribution provides a valuable resource for students, researchers, scientists, and engineers working in the hydrogen economy or involved in the processing, design, manufacturing, quality control, reliability, safety, systems, and testing of cryogenic refrigeration and liquid hydrogen production, storage, and transportation. - Describes, in detail, the current operational and conceptual hydrogen liquefaction, storage, transportation, regasification, and distribution technologies - Offers comprehensive analytical tools, decision-making tools, and practical examples for the advanced modeling and simulation of liquid hydrogen plants - Provides techno-economic, reliability, safety, and environmental impact analysis of liquid hydrogen technologies, along with future prospects

Book Disposal of Hanford Defense High level Transuranic and Tank Wastes Hanford Site Richland Washington Text

Download or read book Disposal of Hanford Defense High level Transuranic and Tank Wastes Hanford Site Richland Washington Text written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is to provide environmental imput into the selection and implementation of final disposal actions for high-level, transuranic and tank wastes located at the Hanford Site, Richland, Washington, and into the construction, operation and decommissioning of waste alternatives. Specifically evaluated are a Hanford Waste Vitrification Plant, Transportable Grout Facility, and a Waste Receiving and Packaging Facility. Also an evaluation is presented to assist in determining whether any additional action should be taken in terms of long-term environmental protection for waste that was disposed of at Hanford prior to 1970 as low-level waste (before the transuranic waste category was established by the Atomic Energy Commission but which might fall into that category if gernerated today.).

Book Remediation of Legacy Hazardous and Nuclear Industrial Sites

Download or read book Remediation of Legacy Hazardous and Nuclear Industrial Sites written by Stuart T. Arm and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-09-12 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remediation of Legacy Hazardous and Nuclear Industrial Sites provides an overview of the key elements involved in remediating complex waste sites using the Hanford nuclear site as a case study. Hanford is one of the most complex waste sites in the world and has examples of most, if not all, characteristics of the complex waste sites that exist globally. This book is aimed at a non-technical audience and describes the stages of remediation based on general RCRA/CERCLA processes, from establishing a strategy that includes all stakeholders to site assessment, waste treatment and disposal, and long-term monitoring. Features: Informs a non-technical audience of the important elements involved in complex waste site remediation Employs the Hanford Site as a case study throughout to explain real-world applications of remediation steps Connects the “human” element to the technical aspects through interviews with key current and retired individuals at the Hanford Site Includes discussion of stakeholders and the engagement process in remediation Demonstrates how all elements of complex waste site remediation from demolition of buildings to groundwater management are interrelated Focuses on broader technical and sociopolitical challenges for remediation of a contaminated site Aimed at a broad audience, this book offers approachable guidance to technical and non-technical readers through a series of real-world examples that cover each important step in the complex waste cleanup process.
