Book Pictorial Metaphor in Advertising

Download or read book Pictorial Metaphor in Advertising written by Charles Forceville and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-22 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, research on metaphor has focused almost exclusively on its verbal and cognitive dimensions. In Pictorial Metaphor in Advertising, Charles Forceville argues that metaphor can also occur in pictures and draws on relevant studies from various disciplines to propose a model for the identification, classification, and analysis of 'pictorial metaphors'. By using insights taken from a range of linguistic, artistic and cognitive perspectives for example, interaction and relevance theory, Forceville shows not only how metaphor can occur in pictures, but also provides a framework within which these pictorial metaphors can be analyzed. The theoretical insights are applied to thirty advertisements and billboards of British, French, German and Dutch origin. Apart from substantiating the claim that it makes sense to talk about `pictorial metaphors', the detailed analyses of the advertisements suggest how metaphor theory can be employed as a tool in media studies. Context in its various manifestations plays a key role in the analyses. Furthermore, the results of a small-scale experiment shed light on where general agreement about the meaning of a pictorial metaphor can shade over into other more idiosyncratic but equally valid interpretations. The final chapter sketches the ways in which the insights gained can be used for further research.

Book excerpt: Professor Hardyal, a highly imaginative and emotional person, is living a normal life in a state government college in North India till an apparently insignificant incident shatters his ethical edifice. During this critical phase of his life he lays bare the decaying fabric of his society, though in the process he also reveals the dark forces lurking in his own psyche. His vast knowledge, particularly of science, literature and history further aggravates his sense of hurt and crippledness. The book narrates the saga of a common man caught in the whirlwind of social and moral forces ready to crush him. His predicament no longer remains confined to the contemporary Indian scene; it assumes a universal dimension of the postmodern person. Haunted by his past memories and goaded by his wild desires, Hardyal still wades through his crippling circumstances to ensure his survival in the midst of these very forces.

Book Hamlet and Other Shakespearean Essays

Download or read book Hamlet and Other Shakespearean Essays written by L. C. Knights and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1979-10-04 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these Shakespearean essays originally published together in 1979, the distinguished literary critic L. C. Knights offers the fruits of his long-term thinking about individual plays (notably, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Lear) and explores the ways in which a deep and imaginative understanding of Shakespeare's work can relate to and enrich other areas of knowledge - politics, history, social and emotional relationships, the nature of theatrical experience ... Certain critical assumptions are of course implicit here: that great works of art have a continuing life which is renewed through perception; that the vitality generated by such works is for all men and that the critic's function is to encourage all readers to see as much as they can for themselves, not to dogmatize or try to impose a particular reading. L. C. Knights admirably fulfils this function in these essays most of which have been gathered from the three volumes entitled Explorations, Further Explorations and Explorations 3.
