Book Magic Hours

Download or read book Magic Hours written by Tom Bissell and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning essayist Tom Bissell explores the highs and lows of the creative process. He takes us from the set of The Big Bang Theory to the first novel of Ernest Hemingway to the final work of David Foster Wallace; from the films of Werner Herzog to the film of Tommy Wiseau to the editorial meeting in which Paula Fox's work was relaunched into the world. Originally published in magazines such as The Believer, The New Yorker, and Harper's, these essays represent ten years of Bissell's best writing on every aspect of creation—be it Iraq War documentaries or video-game character voices—and will provoke as much thought as they do laughter. What are sitcoms for exactly? Can art be both bad and genius? Why do some books survive and others vanish? Bissell's exploration of these questions make for gripping, unforgettable reading.

Book Screamin Jay Hawkins All Time Greatest Hits

Download or read book Screamin Jay Hawkins All Time Greatest Hits written by Mark Binelli and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Binelli turns his sharp, forceful prose to fiction, in an inventive retelling of the outrageous life of Screamin' Jay Hawkins, a bluesman with one hit and a string of inflammatory guises He came on stage in a coffin, carried by pallbearers, drunk enough to climb into his casket every night. Onstage he wore a cape, clamped a bone to his nose, and carried a staff topped with a human skull. Offstage, he insisted he'd been raised by a tribe of Blackfoot Indians, that he'd joined the army at fourteen, that he'd defeated the middleweight boxing champion of Alaska, that he'd fathered seventy-five illegitimate children. The R&B wildman Screamin' Jay Hawkins only had a single hit, the classic "I Put a Spell On You," and was often written off as a clownish novelty act -- or worse, an offense to his race -- but his myth-making was legendary. In his second novel, Mark Binelli embraces the man and the legend to create a hilarious, tragic, fantastical portrait of this unlikeliest of protagonists. Hawkins saw his life story as a wild picaresque, and Binelli's novel follows suit, tackling the subject in a dazzling collage-like style. At Rolling Stone, Binelli has profiled some of the greatest musicians of our time, and this novel deftly plays with the inordinate focus on "authenticity" in so much music writing about African-Americans. An entire novel built around a musician as deliberately inauthentic as Screamin' Jay Hawkins thus becomes a sort of subversive act, as well as an extremely funny and surprisingly moving one.

Book Mission Accomplished

Download or read book Mission Accomplished written by Frank Mares and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heroic account of a man who overcame immense obstacles to avenge his country against Nazi Germany during the Second World War. Appalled at the German occupation of his homeland in 1939, Frank Mares determined to assist his country in their battle for freedom in the only way he could—as a fighter pilot. Unable to do so from Czechoslovakia he began his mission, navigating his way through Poland to France, through manned borders, guarded stations and hostile territory, in order to assist the offensive against their common enemy. Armed with fake identities, evading arrest and faced with uncertainties and frustrations at every turn, his journey was one of courage and fortitude. Narrowly avoiding a five-year enlistment in the foreign legion, Frank eventually made it into the French Air Force and finally, following the withdrawal of France from the war, joined 601 Squadron with the British RAF. Patriotic and determined, he was involved in numerous dogfights and had many engagements with the enemy, flying Hurricanes, of which he was particularly fond. In all of the battles that he fought in the skies with German Luftwaffe pilots, he was never shot down. In 1942 he was decorated with the DFM and Czech War Cross. Despite incident and injury Frank persevered, always driven by love for his country and for the planes he flew. He remained in England after the war and, now retired, lives in the West Country near the old RAF Harrowbeer airfield at Yelverton, Devon.

Book An Unforgettable Salute

Download or read book An Unforgettable Salute written by Col. John R. Gouin and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It all seemed so picture-perfect. It was a typical fall evening in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, in 1965 when John Gouin, a twelve-year-old boy with big dreams came home from football practice and sat down at the dinner table with his mother. But when the front door slammed loudly shut, John and his mother anticipated the worst. His father was a man lost within his own anger. In his compelling memoir, An Unforgettable Salute, Gouin chronicles his lifelong battle to please his alcoholic father, his attempts to stop the physical abuse, and his journey to psychological and spiritual healing that eventually culminated in a heartwarming final exchange with his gravely ill father. After describing a childhood during which he was physically beaten and emotionally scarred, Gouin details his dream of playing in the NFL, which lasted until a devastating injury ended his football career. After struggling to find his calling, Gouin eventually joined the army, where he had a life changing experience with God paving the road for him to leave a life of violence. The military taught him self-discipline and the necessary leadership skills that later guided him to achieve professional success as a podiatric surgeon, a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and a husband and father. An Unforgettable Salute is the true story of one man who rose from the silent side of abuse to achieve healing, happiness, success, and most of all, peace.

Book Herbert Sutcliffe

Download or read book Herbert Sutcliffe written by Alan Hill and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2022-06-23 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A national hero in his playing days, Herbert Sutcliffe belongs to a select band of all-time cricketing greats. Alan Hill's award-winning biography of the Yorkshire and England batsman charts his extraordinary transformation from cobbler's apprentice to urbane gentleman: one of the coolest, most determined and technically accomplished practitioners the game has ever known. Blessed with the looks of a matinee idol, Sutcliffe was a complex, often enigmatic, personality. As a cricketer, he was touched with genius. His career spanned exactly the years between the wars and he performed with distinction in every one of those seasons. He scored 50,138 first-class runs, including 149 centuries, and his remarkable Test average of 60.73 is the highest for an English batsman – higher than those of Hobbs, Hammond or Hutton. Herbert Sutcliffe: Cricket Maestro calls upon the reminiscences of Bob Wyatt, Sir Donald Bradman, Sir Len Hutton and Les Ames among other illustrious contemporaries, to evoke the splendour of Sutcliffe's achievements for Yorkshire and England, and to bring to life the vivacious story of one of the greatest batsmen ever.
