Book Improving Self Escape from Underground Coal Mines

Download or read book Improving Self Escape from Underground Coal Mines written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal mine disasters in the United States are relatively rare events; many of the roughly 50,000 miners underground will never have to evacuate a mine in an emergency during their careers. However, for those that do, the consequences have the potential to be devastating. U.S. mine safety practices have received increased attention in recent years because of the highly publicized coal mine disasters in 2006 and 2010. Investigations have centered on understanding both how to prevent or mitigate emergencies and what capabilities are needed by miners to self-escape to a place of safety successfully. This report focuses on the latter - the preparations for self-escape. In the wake of 2006 disasters, the U.S. Congress passed the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act), which was designed to strengthen existing mine safety regulations and set forth new measures aimed at improving accident preparedness and emergency response in underground coal mines. Since that time, the efforts of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) have contributed to safety improvements in the mining industry. However, the Upper Big Branch mine explosion in 2010 served as a reminder to remain ever vigilant on improving the prevention of mine disasters and preparations to help miners survive in the event of emergencies. This study was set in the context of human-systems integration (HSI), a systems approach that examines the interaction of people, tasks, and equipment and technology in the pursuit of a goal. It recognizes this interaction occurs within, and is influenced by, the broader environmental context. A key premise of human-systems integration is that much important information is lost when the various tasks within a system are considered individually or in isolation rather than in interaction with the whole system. Improving Self-Escape from Underground Coal Mines, the task of self-escape is part of the mine safety system.

Book Strategies for Escape and Rescue from Underground Coal Mines

Download or read book Strategies for Escape and Rescue from Underground Coal Mines written by Danrick W. Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Section 2 of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (2006 MINER Act), Public Law 109-236, [MINER Act 2006] directed operators of underground coal mines to improve accident preparedness and response. This report summarizes the findings of research conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) between December 2007 and March 2009 to identify the attributes of an improved escape and rescue system. This report focuses on specific guidelines for escape and rescue from underground coal mines during fire and explosion incidents and contains an investigation of United States and worldwide mine practices. The basic elements of a mine emergency response system (escape, rescue, and incident command) are addressed. Further, knowledge gaps, training, human behavior, and technology challenges are also identified. This report presents a strategy of self-escape and safe-rescue including incident command as an integrated system with consideration given to U.S. underground coal mine demographics. The findings are intended to facilitate the evolution of all miners' capabilities and support institutions so that they will have a greater chance of successfully managing abnormal incidents without injury or fatalities.

Book Mine Safety

Download or read book Mine Safety written by Anne-Marie Lasowski and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2006, several mining tragedies led Congress to pass the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act). It requires underground coal mine operators to develop emergency response plans that contain several components designed to improve accident preparedness and response, including providing a refuge of air to miners trapped underground after an accident and wireless commun. systems. The Mine Safety and Health Admin. (MSHA) is responsible for approving the plans and ensuring their implementation. This report examines: (1) the effectiveness of the approval process; (2) the status of implementation of the plans; and (3) MSHA¿s efforts to enforce and oversee implementations. Illustrations.

Book Investigation of Reduced Order Fire Modeling for Improved Safety and Response in Underground Coal Mines

Download or read book Investigation of Reduced Order Fire Modeling for Improved Safety and Response in Underground Coal Mines written by Kray Luxbacher and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire hazards are omnipresent in underground coal mines and remain a serious hazard. Modeling and characterization of mine fire behavior is critical for effective fire monitoring and early warning, evacuation of personnel, rapid response, and successful fire fighting. In order to develop better preventative and mitigating controls, this capacity-building contract will examine new modeling techniques, state-of-the-art fire fighting techniques for application to mine fires, and systematically apply this knowledge for a generalized risk assessment of fires in underground coal mines.

Book Responsible Mining

Download or read book Responsible Mining written by Michelle E. Jarvie-Eggart and published by SME. This book was released on 2015-01-08 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining Can Be Environmentally and Socially Responsible—and Still Profitable Even in this regulated, environmentally aware world, running a mine can be done safely, with combined goals of maximizing both the return on investment from extraction and the positive environmental and social impact that a well-run, responsible mine can offer. Responsible Mining is your comprehensive guide to addressing social and environmental risks at mines in the developed world. This book gathers case studies of best practices across the full range of issues. With examples from four continents, you can learn from both your home territory and around the world. Seventy-two leading mine engineers, forestry scientists, conservationists, environmental consultants, sustainability professionals, and geologists from prominent universities, extraction businesses, nongovernmental organizations, and governments have come together within these pages to lead you safely and profitably toward socially, environmentally, and economically beneficial mining practices. Organized around ten sustainability principles required of International Council on Mining and Metals members (including some of the largest extraction businesses in the world), the book addresses nearly every environmental and social consequence of mining in developed countries, including: · Protecting biodiversity · Minimizing negative impacts on climate change · Interacting appropriately with indigenous peoples · Enhancing the local community and reducing poverty · Reusing and recycling materials · Recovering energy · Recapturing and reusing water · Managing proper storage, reclamation, and disposal of tailings · Restoring the land after ceasing mining operations You will want to make this book required reading for all members of your team who are responsible for environmental compliance, resource recovery, sustainability, energy management, and marketing/public relations to facilitate cross-departmental discussions about how to incorporate best practices into your business plans.
