Book excerpt: An Unbelievable Hoot is a funny, risqué novel about a lawyer who owns land formerly used as an industrial chemical factory but is now occupied by a number of industrial units including bakers Diggers, a plant hire company. Having done well they seek to extend their showroom but in digging out to put in foundations for the extension, they unwittingly release gases from chemicals previously buried. These have a strange effect on passers-by. A magistrate unknowingly breathes in these gases before entering Do-it-All a hardware superstore. He is compelled to assault a lady who is bent over examining some cans of paint. She turns out to be an off-duty policewoman who immediately arrests him. The gases are also breathed in at an institution for retired lady civil servants who then attack young men working in the establishment. They are arrested and everybody has to appear in Court. Norris (nickname 'Nosey") Parker a nasally well-endowed journalist headlines the story in the Daily Spread and sets out to investigate. A hilarious journey begins...

Book Hoot N Gin

Download or read book Hoot N Gin written by Michael N. and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-11-03 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Virginia and Michael begin recovery from alcoholism in Alcoholics Anonymous, they correspond several times a week. They view letter writing and their deepening relationship as a lifeline in the chaos of change. Letters selected from over 2000 written during the next five years chronicle the raw material of their recovery. As their recovery becomes increasingly mired in conflict between the deception required to maintain their relationship and "rigorous honesty" required to attain lasting sobriety, Hoot and Gin (alter egos) spontaneously emerge in the writing. With the mobility of mental apparitions, these "kids" are traded back and forth by their adult counterparts, nurturing, modeling new behaviors, broaching sensitive subjects, and teaching the healing art of laughing at self. They help the adults move through stuck places and give up stubborn resistance to change. For anyone contemplating recovery or living with an alcoholic, who is questioning how Twelve Steps can have any practical application to a situation as complicated as theirs, Hoot 'n Gin reveals how two skeptical people eventually find all twelve are gifts, not punishment. This trip through the Twelve Steps demonstrates how the act of letter writing can augment a recovery program by encouraging introspection, lending support, and measuring progress.

Book excerpt: Many towns have their murderers, but are they also members of a church, a Boy Scout leader, or president of the congregation? Could they be trusted to bring a covered dish faithfully to church suppers? This novel takes the BTK murders in Wichita, Kansas, as inspiration to question issues of evil. How could a man commit murder and yet sit in church all those years until he was caught? What is a Christian? What is Christianity? Can a Christian murderer go to heaven? Mark Cabot and Ralph Gheary, minister and assistant minister of the church to which murderer Thomas Fout belonged, disagree as they face the shame, quandary, and confusion Fout leaves in his wake. How could they not have known? How can they face their congregation, the news reporters, fellow pastors, and the public? How long does it take to recover from the shock? Both men's wives, Grace Cabot and Zelda Gheary, are also left reeling in the upheaval. The questions remain: Can a man be good without God? Can a man be good with God?

Book Conversations with Kentucky Writers

Download or read book Conversations with Kentucky Writers written by Linda Elisabeth LaPinta and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-11-21 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kentucky and Kentuckians are full of stories, which may be why so many present-day writers have Kentucky roots. Whether they left and returned, like Wendell Berry and Bobbie Ann Mason, or adopted Kentucky as home, like James Still and Jim Wayne Miller, or grew up and left for good, like Michael Dorris and Barbara Kingsolver, they have one connection: Kentucky has influenced their writing and their lives. L. Elisabeth Beattie explores this influence in twenty intimate interviews. Conversations with Kentucky Writers was more than three years in the making, as Beattie traveled across the state and beyond to capture oral histories on tape. Her exhaustive knowledge of these authors helped her draw out personal revelations about their work, their lives, and the nature of writing. When Still concludes his interview with "I believe I've told you more than anybody," he could be speaking for any of Beattie's subjects. Aspiring writers will learn that Mason submitted twenty stories to the New Yorker before one was accepted, and that Still wrote articles for Sunday school magazines. There's plenty of advice: Dorris tells budding authors to get real jobs, keep journals, and read everything, even cereal boxes, and Marsha Norman reminds playwrights that "it is not the business of the theater to provide writers with a living." Kingsolver advises, "Read good stuff and write bad stuff until eventually what you're writing begins to approximate what you're reading." Beattie's collection includes striking self-portraits of such writers as Sue Grafton, Leon Driskell, James Baker Hall, Fenton Johnson, George Ella Lyon, Taylor McCafferty, Ed McClanahan, Sena Naslund, Chris Offutt, Lee Pennington, and Betty Layman Receveur. What most distinguishes these moving conversations from other author interviews is their focus on creativity, on the teaching of writing, and on the authors' strong sense of place. As Wade Hall writes in his foreword, all twenty writers recognize that their works have been significantly influenced by their "Kentucky experience." This collection offers insights into Kentucky's rich and flowering literary heritage.
