Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the History of the Christian Reformed Church of America We cannot refrain from - nor do we apologize for - this little digression from the straight line of narration, since there are so many striking coincidences in the history of both the United Presbyterian and Christian Reformed Churches. Even the sobriquet of seceders has been awarded us, though a century later, in 1834, as the latter part of this sketch will show, and has been inflicted upon us until the present day, yea by brethren whom we love and who feel quite at liberty to boast the same godly ancestry as we Christian Reformed people do. A controversy is not always pleasant reading, but God overrules it for his glory. Book Historical Manual of the Reformed Church in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historical Manual of the Reformed Church in the United States Classic Reprint written by Joseph Henry Dubbs and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Manual of the Reformed Church in the United States It was found, however, that at least one publication of this order was already in existence, and upon reflection and consultation he was induced to change his plan, and to prepare a volume consisting mainly of historical sketches illustrative of the history of the Reformed Church from the days of the Reformation down to the present time. Some of these sketches were, at the time of their composition, printed in "The Guardian," a monthly magazine of which the author is editor, and though not strictly consecutive they are inserted in deference to the wishes of partial friends. In its present farm the book is intended to serve a double purpose. While it furnishes reading for the family, it also claims to be useful as a book of reference by enabling the reader to trace the career of individual ministers and the chronological order of the meetings of ecclesiastical bodies. In the preparation of Book I., which relates to the Church in Europe, the writer has by preference consulted works whose authors have been members of the Reformed Church. Among these may be mentioned: "Leben der Vater und Begrunder der Reformirten Kirche," 10 vols., Elberfeld, 1857; Max Goebel's "Geschichte des Christlichen Lebens in der rheinisch-west-phalischen evangelischen Kirche," 4 vols., Coblenz, 1849; Heppe's "Protestantismus," 2 vols., Marburg, 1852; and Cuno's "Gedachtnissbuch deutscher Fursten und Furstinnen reformirten Bekenntnisses," Barmen, 1884. The author has also frequently referred to the writings of Herzog, Ebrard, and Lange, as well as to the more usual German and English authorities on the history of the Reformation. Download or read book History of the Reformed Church in the United States written by James I. Good and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformed Church in the United States: 1725-1792 The present volume is the culmination of years of search. The author's previous volumes on the history of the Reformed Church of Germany were gathered in seeking to find the mater ial for this volume. In 1893, at the suggestion of Rev. Dr. Corwin, the distinguished historian of the Dutch Reformed Church, the author was led to write to Amsterdam to know what records of the German Reformed Church in this country were there. But the price demanded for copying them was so high that the matter was dropped. In 1895 the author visited Amsterdam and arranged to have the Amsterdam correspon dence Copied, but was somewhat disappointed at getting only two of the missing coetus' minutes. In 1896, at the suggestion of Mr. Henry S. Dotterer, of Philadelphia, he visited the archives at the Hague, and there found the m1ss1ng coetus' minutes, together with a multitude of other correspondence. As far as he knows he was the first minister of our denomina tion to see these treasures at Amsterdam and also at the Hague. Afterward with the aid of his esteemed colleague, Rev. Prof. W. J. Hinke, he was able to get these manuscripts Copied. The same kind of search was made in Switzerland, Germany and England with surprising results, until we can reasonably say that most of the early history of our Church is clear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Reformed Church in America York, and to the several individuals who have allowed him the use of the steel plates belonging to them, and for other assistance; and especially to the sons of Dr. John Ludlow, to the daughters of Dr. Gosman, and to Cap tain J. M. Wyckofi', of Millstone, for the new plates which they have kindly had engraved expressly for this work. The writer regrets that Dr. Sprague's interesting volume, which should be in the hands of all our ministry, did not sooner appear. He was only able to condense a few lines from it concerning Revs. Moses Freeligh and Jeremiah Romeyn, as this work was going through the press. He had failed to obtain any sketches of these men. NO doubt some errors will be noticed, but these are altogether inseparable from' a book of this character. It is believed, however, that they will be compar atively few. The work is given to the public, hoping that it may subserve the interests of religion, by increasing our knowledge of the progress and development of the denomination, and leading to new and enlarged plans of usefulness and liberality. P. S. - We have learned while the book was in press that the efforts for the increased endowment of the Seminary have already resulted in a gift of from James Suydam, Esq., of new-york. Book History of the Reformed Church in Reading Pa Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of the Reformed Church in Reading Pa Classic Reprint written by Daniel Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformed Church in Reading, Pa The history of the Reformed Church in the city of Reading has been a favorite study with the author for several years. It has been his aim to present this history in an authentic form, and in this effort he has spared neither time nor money to produce a reliable and satisfactory volume. Heretofore a good deal of the Church's local history was based upon mere tradition, and in this way many errors were accepted as historical facts. We have endeavored to authenticate all data, so as to present a reliable history. This required a great deal of research, but it was interesting employment, and the author feels regarded for all the time expended in the preparation of the book. The author is under obligations to Prof. W. J. Hinke for valuable assistance, especially in reference to the early period of the history of the First Reformed congregation in Reading; to B. Y. Shearer, esq., and John H. Bridenbaugh, esq., for assistance in examining the county records, and to the local pastors in a general way. The minutes of the Coetus, published several years ago, gave us valuable assistance in determining many problems in reference to the early pastors of the First church. The records of the First church, placed at our disposal by the consistory, have also been very helpful. The present volume is the first effort of its kind. We have sought to present an accurate and fairly complete history of all the Reformed congregations in Reading. To publish a complete history would have been far beyond the bounds of one volume. As it is, the book is considerably larger than it was originally intended to be. We hope the reader may find as much pleasure in perusing the book as the writer enjoyed in preparing it.
