Book Introduction to Phonetics

Download or read book Introduction to Phonetics written by L. F. Brosnahan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1975-08-27 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introductory textbook in general phonetics was first published in 1976. It will be of use to all with an interest in the nature and working of the sound substance of human language, such as students of phonetics and linguistics, teachers and students of modern languages, speech therapists and audiologists. The emphasis is on the basics: the organs of speech and hearing, the methods of sound production in the vocal tract, the types of sound used in human languages, and the process of speech perception. The focus of attention is always the tongue and ear of the phonetician as an investigator of speech, rather than his instruments or experiments, with due attention paid to the phoneme and the distinctive feature, the units in that border area where phonetics and the study of languages come together.

Book Introducing Phonetics and Phonology

Download or read book Introducing Phonetics and Phonology written by Mike Davenport and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines some of the ways in which linguists can express what native speakers know about the sound system of their language. Intended for the absolute beginner, it requires no previous background in linguistics, phonetics or phonology. Starting with a grounding in phonetics and phonological theory, the book provides a base from which more advanced treatments may be approached. It begins with an examination of the foundations of articulatory and acoustic phonetics, moves on to the basic principles of phonology, and ends with an outline of some further issues within contemporary phonology. Varieties of English, particularly Received Pronunciation and General American, form the focus of consideration, but aspects of the phonetics and phonology of other languages are discussed as well. This new edition includes more discussion of Optimality Theory and a new glossary of terms. It has been updated throughout to take account of the latest developments in phonological theory, but without sacrificing the book's ease of use for beginners.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Phonetics: For Missionaries and Students of Languages This book has been prepared with the object of helping language students to enter their field of work with some means of coping with the difficulties they are likely to meet as regards foreign pronunciation. I have described more or less fully some four score of the main types of human speech-sounds, and have given some account of the chief phonetic phenomena. The work makes no pretence to be anything like exhaustive of the subject, but it aims at being suggestive. I hope that students who read it and are led to feel interested in Phonetics will be incited to undertake a detailed study of the works of those authors who have specialised in some particular language or group of languages. I have written mainly for those whose native language is English, and therefore the sounds of English are taken as what may be called the cardinal points of speech-sounds. It was necessary to fix upon some "dialect" of the language as a standard, and, after very serious consideration, I decided to adopt Southern English as my basis of comparison. This does not mean that I consider this dialect in any way superior to others, but that, as many of the best books on English Phonetics have been written with this as a standard, I thought it advisable to follow suit. From many points of view Northern English would have been preferable, especially from the fact that many of the Northern vowels differ but little from those of many foreign languages.
