Book excerpt: "The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic marks the most significant, singular global disruption since World War II, with health, economic, political, and security implications that will ripple for years to come." -Global Trends 2040 (2021) Global Trends 2040-A More Contested World (2021), released by the US National Intelligence Council, is the latest report in its series of reports starting in 1997 about megatrends and the world's future. This report, strongly influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, paints a bleak picture of the future and describes a contested, fragmented and turbulent world. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States faces major challenges in dealing with Iran, the threat of terrorism, and the tide of political instability in the Arabian Peninsula. The presence of some of the world’s largest reserves of oil and natural gas, vital shipping lanes, and Shia populations throughout the region have made the peninsula the focal point of US and Iranian strategic competition. Moreover, large youth populations, high unemployment rates, and political systems with highly centralized power bases have posed other economic, political, and security challenges that the Gulf states must address and that the United States must take into consideration when forming strategy and policy.

Book Mapiranje prostorov modernisti nih mest v kontekstu na el CIAM ove Atenske listine

Download or read book Mapiranje prostorov modernisti nih mest v kontekstu na el CIAM ove Atenske listine written by Katarina Mohar and published by Založba ZRC. This book was released on 2020 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Prispevki so razvrščeni v sedem tematskih sklopov, ki naslavljajo vrsto do sedaj redko tematiziranih vidikov: nastanek in utemeljitev funkcionalističnega mesta, središče funkcionalističnih novih mest in identiteta mesta, enoličnost ali raznolikost modernistične stanovanjske arhitekture, pozabljena in propadajoča industrijska dediščina, sakralna arhitektura v novih funkcionalističnih mestih, spomeniki v javnem prostoru modernističnih mest, mapiranje in vizualizacija mestnega prostora.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of original essays examines the relationship between Islam, the nature of state projects, and the position of women in the modern nation states of the Middle East and South Asia. Arguing that Islam is not uniform across Muslim societies and that women's roles in these societies cannot be understood simply by looking at texts and laws. the contributors focus, instead, on the effects of the political projects of states on the lives of women.--provided by publisher.

Book Education and the Cultural Cold War in the Middle East

Download or read book Education and the Cultural Cold War in the Middle East written by Mahdi Ganjavi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-26 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2023 MIDDLE EAST LIBRARIANS ASSOCIATION BOOK AWARD. The Franklin Book Programs (FBP) was a private not-for-profit U.S. organization founded in 1952 during the Cold War and was subsidized by the United States' government agencies as well as private corporations. The FBP was initially intended to promote U.S. liberal values, combat Soviet influence and to create appropriate markets for U.S. books in 'Third World' of which the Middle East was an important part, but evolved into an international educational program publishing university textbooks, schoolbooks, and supplementary readings. In Iran, working closely with the Pahlavi regime, its activities included the development of printing, publishing, book distribution, and bookselling institutions. This book uses archival sources from the FBP, US intelligence agencies and in Iran, to piece together this relationship. Put in the context of wider cultural diplomacy projects operated by the US, it reveals the extent to which the programme shaped Iran's educational system. Together the history of the FBP, its complex network of state and private sector, the role of U.S. librarians, publishers, and academics, and the joint projects the FBP organized in several countries with the help of national ministries of education, financed by U.S. Department of State and U.S. foundations, sheds new light on the long history of education in imperialist social orders, in the context here of the ongoing struggle for influence in the Cold War.
