Download or read book International Law and the United States Military Intervention in the Western Hemisphere written by Max Hilaire and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study tackles a controversial topic in international law and contemporary international relations, namely, the legality of intervention by a major power against weaker states within the same geographic region. Specifically, the author examines the practice of United States intervention in the Western Hemisphere, with particular emphasis on the relationship between the United States and its Latin American and Caribbean neighbours. The work highlights six cases of U.S. intervention-Guatemala in 1954, Cuba in 1961, the Dominican Republic in 1965, Grenada in 1983, Nicaragua in 1985, and Panama in 1989. In each case the United States arguably violated international law and the sovereignty of the states involved but claimed it had a right to intervene to protect the lives of its nationals or to defend its national security against an external threat. These cases amply demonstrate the conflict between international law on the one hand, and regional norms, power politics, and political doctrines on the other. They also illustrate how international law can be manipulated to advance the foreign policy goals of a major power. The author adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining international law, political doctrines, international relations theory and historical antecedents, to provide a better understanding of the relationship between a major power and its subordinates and of the relevance of international law in such a relationship.
Download or read book Green Cities Governance and the Law written by Andrés Boix Palop and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focusses on the developing role that the city currently plays in dealing with the effects of climate change and the instruments that can be utilised to make them truly green. Cities are at the centre of European directives aimed at tackling climate change, representing a key part of the European Green Deal and the National Recovery and Resilience Plans. As such, they provide valuable case studies for other countries grappling with how to address sustainability issues. This book is divided into three parts, with the first analysing Green urban planning and local governments in the European framework. The second examines various thematic aspects relating to this intersection, looking at the National Recovery and Resilience Plans, the right of the city and environmental issues. The third and final part presents case studies from four European cities showing how they are facing this transformation. These include Bologna, Paris, Barcelona and Valencia, each chosen by the Mission climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. Bringing together leading experts, some of whom have been directly involved in developments, the book presents invaluable comparisons that will be of interest to a wider international readership. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers and policymakers working in the areas of Public Law, Environmental Law, Urban Law and Governance.

Download or read book Condominium Governance and Law in Global Urban Context written by Randy K. Lippert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines condominium, property, governance, and law in international and conceptual perspective and reveals this urban realm as complex and mutating. Condominiums are proliferating the world over and transforming the socio-spatial organization of cities and residential life. The collection assembles arguably the most prominent scholars in the world currently working in this broad area and situated in multiple disciplines, including legal and socio-legal studies, political science, public administration, and sociology. Their analyses span condominium governance and law on five continents and in nine countries: the United States (US), China, Australia, the United Kingdom (UK), Canada, South Africa, Israel, Denmark, and Spain. Neglected issues and emerging trends related to condominium governance and law in cities from Tel Aviv to Chicago to Melbourne are discerned and analysed. The book pursues fresh empirical inquiries and cogent conceptual engagements regarding how condominiums are governed through law and other means. It includes accounts of a wide range of governance difficulties including chronic anti-social owner behaviour, short-term rentals, and even the COVID-19 pandemic, and how they are being dealt with. By uncovering crucial cross-national commonalities, the book reveals the global urban context of condominium governance and law as empirically rich and conceptually fruitful. The book will appeal to researchers and students in socio-legal studies, law, sociology, political science, urban studies, and public administration as well as journalists, social activists, policymakers, and condo owners/board members.

Download or read book Unresolved Issues And New Challenges to the Law of the Sea written by Anastasia Stratē and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work analyzes the management of shared fish stocks; protection of the underwater cultural heritage; the possibilities of establishing marine protected areas and other means for safeguarding vulnerable marine ecosystems; the use of the high seas for intelligence as well as recent developments on interdiction of vessels on the high seas. Special emphasis is paid to the role of international courts and tribunals in the progressive development of the law of the sea as well as the ability of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea to accommodate new uses and challenges, such as new concerns, new technological possibilities, in particular, new contexts and functions of established rules. The 1982 Convention seems capable of coping with most of them, although it remains useful to explore its possibilities and limits. This work, covering many aspects, will be useful to anyone interested in the law of the sea.
