Book The History and Future of the World Trade Organization

Download or read book The History and Future of the World Trade Organization written by Craig VanGrasstek and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The History and Future of the World Trade Organization is a comprehensive account of the economic, political and legal issues surrounding the creation of the WTO and its evolution. Fully illustrated with colour and black-and-white photos dating back to the early days of trade negotiations, the publication reviews the WTO's achievements as well as the challenges faced by the organisation, and identifies the key questions that WTO members need to address in the future. The book describes the intellectual roots of the trading system, membership of the WTO and the growth of the Geneva trade community, trade negotiations and the development of coalitions among the membership, and the WTO's relations with other international organisations and civil society. Also covered are the organisation's robust dispute settlement rules, the launch and evolution of the Doha Round, the rise of regional trade agreements, and the leadership and management of the WTO.

Book The Social Services Crisis of the 1990s

Download or read book The Social Services Crisis of the 1990s written by Anna Kajumulo Tibaijuka and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume represents the outcome of a seminar as part of the continuing efforts of the Convocation of the University of Dar es Salam to maintain a dialogue with the Government of Tanzania on its socio-economic problems. Its aim was to underscore heightened public concern on the continued deterioration of social services in Tanzania following the onset of the economic crisis, to examine the effect of structural adjustment policies and measures on health, education, water, food, security, housing and social welfare services and to make specific recommendations on how to improve the delivery and sustainability of social services. This volume reproduces, as far as is practicable, the full proceedings of that important forum, whose issues remain relevant today. Recent reforms in the country, including privatization, graded user fees and decentralized management of social services by local communities have been substantially influenced by what the seminar recommended. While a section of society has welcomed these reforms as the only realistic way to achieve sustainability, reduce donor dependence, and prevent further deterioration of social services, there are still voices which object to the measures. Key questions raised in the book concern citizens’ rights to social services, the regulatory role of government, democratic participation and partnerships between government, NGOs and private providers of social services. It will serve as a reference point for a fresh review of the social services crisis in the 1990’s and the basis for devising more appropriate and sustainable strategies for the 21st Century.

Book The WTO at Twenty

Download or read book The WTO at Twenty written by World Trade Organization and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research explores how multilateralism in trade has worked over the past twenty years - and provides some lessons about how it can work in the future. It describes the WTO's achievements across a number of key areas, including: strengthening the institutional foundations of the trade system; widening its membership and increasing participation; deepening trade integration through lower barriers and stronger rules; improving transparency and policy dialogue; strengthening dispute settlement; expanding cooperation with other international organizations; and enhancing public outreach. It concludes that the WTO has achieved much over its first twenty years but the success of the WTO has inevitably given rise to new challenges.

Book New Visions for the Americas

Download or read book New Visions for the Americas written by David B. Batstone and published by Augsburg Fortress Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the approach of a new millennium, profound economic, social, and geopolitical changes have transformed the global map and shaken the contours of liberation thinking, North and South. Although the overarching hemispheric issue remains justice, it is more likely now to erupt in contexts of environment, basic economic rights, systems of adjudication, the survival of indigenous peoples, and the liberation of women worldwide. To address this new context of liberation, especially around structural issues of race, class, and gender, this volume presents the views of fourteen of today's most incisive religious leaders and thinkers - male and female, North and South, black and white, theologians and activists.
