Book Irregular Unions

  • Author : Katharine Cleland

  • Pages : 131 pages

Download or read book Irregular Unions written by Katharine Cleland and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katharine Cleland's Irregular Unions provides the first sustained literary history of clandestine marriage in early modern England and reveals its controversial nature in the wake of the Elizabethan Religious Settlement, which standardized the marriage ritual for the first time. Cleland examines many examples of clandestine marriage across genres. Discussing such classic works as The Faerie Queene, Othello, and The Merchant of Venice, she argues that early modern authors used clandestine marriage to explore the intersection between the self and the marriage ritual in post-Reformation England. The ways in which authors grappled with the political and social complexities of clandestine marriage, Cleland finds, suggest that these narratives were far more than interesting plot devices or scandalous stories ripped from the headlines. Instead, after the Reformation, fictions of clandestine marriage allowed early modern authors to explore topics of identity formation in new and different ways. Book Marriage in Ireland 1660 1925

Download or read book Marriage in Ireland 1660 1925 written by Maria Luddy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-25 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What were the laws on marriage in Ireland, and did church and state differ in their interpretation? How did men and women meet and arrange to marry? How important was patriarchy and a husband's control over his wife? And what were the options available to Irish men and women who wished to leave an unhappy marriage? This first comprehensive history of marriage in Ireland across three centuries looks below the level of elite society for a multi-faceted exploration of how marriage was perceived, negotiated and controlled by the church and state, as well as by individual men and women within Irish society. Making extensive use of new and under-utilised primary sources, Maria Luddy and Mary O'Dowd explain the laws and customs around marriage in Ireland. Revising current understandings of marital law and relations, Marriage in Ireland, 1660–1925 represents a major new contribution to Irish historical studies.

Book excerpt: From apostolic times the Church has wrestled with the dilemma of how to defend its belief in the sanctity and permanence of marriage, while at the same time ministering the love and compassion of Christ to those traumatised by the experience of marital breakdown.Timothy Buckley is a Redemptorist priest who produced a report for the Catholic bishops of England and Wales on the pastoral situation among priests and people argues that the theology of the bond of marriage is responsible for an impasse which often limits the Churchæs official solutions to the granting of annulments. By tracing the history of the teaching on the bond, he concludes that the present discipline is based on disputable theiology and he proposes a way forward. An enlightened, sound, and original look at marriage today.
