Book Work environment and nurses involvement in continuing education program

Download or read book Work environment and nurses involvement in continuing education program written by Ethel Joy T. Castillo and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nurse practice environment as defined by Lake (2002) are organizational characteristics of a work setting that can facilitate or constrain professional nursing practice. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) on the other hand has been suggested by researchers to increase the nurses' competence, thereby facilitating their practice. Furthermore, nurse work environment and CPD have been significantly related to job satisfaction of nurses. CPD as one the initiatives of nurse work environment and is mandated by the Philippine law, is understudied in the local healthcare setting. This study aims to know the relationship of nurse work environment as perceived by the nurses and the nurses' involvement in CPD. A descriptive-correlational design was used in this study with 95 eligible staff nurses as participants from two ISO accredited selected hospitals in Metro Manila. Ethics approval from the UST Institutional Review Board and the participant's consent were sought. The Practice Environment Scale: Nurse Work Index-Australia Revised (PES:NWI-AR) and the Questionnaire-Continuing Professional Development (Q-CPD) were utilized in this study after they have been tested by experts for reliability which yielded a Cronbach alpha of 0.97 for PES:NWI-AR and 0.91-0.98 for Q-CPD. Descriptive statistics and Regression analysis were used to analyze the data gathered. The findings of the study revealed low extent of the nurse work environment on all attributes except on staffing and resource adequacy with a moderate extent. In terms of CPD, the findings revealed high extent of reasons for participating in CPD, degree of importance of CPD activities to be of high extent, degree of influence of conditions that limits CPD activities to be of high extent, and moderate extent for participation in CPD activities. Associations revealed no significant relationship between the nurse work environment's attributes and nurses' involvement in CPD. Results of the study may be used to improve nurse work environments and to strengthen the CPD of Filipino nurses.

Book Relationships of Self direction and Attitude Toward Continuing Education in Community College Allied Health Programs

Download or read book Relationships of Self direction and Attitude Toward Continuing Education in Community College Allied Health Programs written by Writer on educational psychology Hall and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing education is a vital component in health care because professionals operate in a complex discipline that is continuously evolving. Ongoing social, technological, and medical changes present many trials and challenges to professionals in health care (Cadorin, Suter, Dante, Williamson, Devetti, & Palese, 2012). Additionally, health care professionals who acknowledge continuing education as a lifelong exercise are well suited to remain well-informed of innovative developments (Cadorin et al., 2012; Evans, Gallatin, Taylor, & Brodnik, 2008; El-Gilany & Abusaad, 2013; Levett-Jones, 2005). In health care, self-directed learning can contribute to increased confidence, independence, inspiration, and growth of skills (O'Shea, 2003; Yuan et al., 2012). Individuals with the capability to be highly self-directed can utilize this to discern any level of personal weakness then work to rectify the deficiency (Avdal, 2013; Yuan et al., 2012).The study's purpose was to explore relationships among self-directed learning and attitude toward continuing education among students participating in community college Allied Health programs. For this study, 113 students in Allied Health degree programs at a southeastern community college participated. Respondents completed Stockdale's (2003) Personal Responsibility Orientation-Self Directed Learning Scale (PRO-SDLS), Blunt and Yang's (2002) Revised Attitude toward Continuing Education Scale (RAACES), as well as answered two demographic questions (age and class rank). The results revealed that level of self-direction has a significant relationship between several factors and items related to attitude toward continuing education. One of the strongest findings was that participants with high levels of self-direction viewed adult education as a way to make better use of their lives. The information resulting from this study will enhance the current literature and allow for better understanding of self-directed learning principles and their relationship with attitude toward continuing education. Applying this information in Allied Health programs may have a substantial effect on how faculty facilitates self-directed learning principles in their area of study (El-Gilnay & Abusaad, 2013). Future recommendations for research comprise of a duplication of the study using a more diverse and increased sample size across multiple community colleges and conducting other studies that would examine introducing self-directed learning principles into Allied Health programs.

Book Participation of Registered Nurses in Continuing Education

Download or read book Participation of Registered Nurses in Continuing Education written by Karen Anne Gehan and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This correlational study investigated the psychological types, learning style preferences, readiness for self-directed learning, demographic and continuing education participation data of 154 registered nurses at two different Southern Ontario hospitals. One hospital was a large tertiary care university-affiliated teaching centre (Cityview) and the other was a smaller secondary care community hospital (Waterview). The instruments used in the study were the PET Type Check, Kolb's Learning Style Inventory, the Self-Directed Readiness Scale (SDLRS), and a Nursing Survey developed by the researcher. Descriptive statistics, crosstabulations and correlational analyses were calculated. The most common psychological types identified among this sample of nurses were extraverted thinking, introverted intuitive and extraverted intuitive. There were no significant differences between the two hospitals. The accommodator learning style was preferred overall, with more nurses at Waterview Hospital preferring the diverger learning style, and more nurses at Cityview Hospital preferring the accommodator learning style. The majority of nurses scored in the average and above average categories on the SDLRS, indicating that they perceive themselves as ready to engage in self-directed learning. At Cityview Hospital there were more nurses in the average and high readiness categories, whereas at Waterview Hospital more nurses scored in the below average category. No significant correlations were found for learning style with psychological type, or for learning style with SDLRS scores. A positive correlation was found to exist between SDLRS scores and each of the psychological types extraverted feelings, extraverted thinking, and introverted intuitive. The only significant correlation for psychological type and continuing education activity was a positive correlation between extraverted thinking types and participation in informal discussion or study groups. Positive correlations were found for SDLRS scores with each of the following continuing education activities; number of hours per month spent reading journals; journal reading; attendance at credit courses; watching videos; using reference texts. Further details of the results are included as well as a discussion of the findings and implications for future research.

Book excerpt: Abstract The study was undertaken to identify what motivates registered nurses to participate in continuing education activities. The primary questions were whether basic nursing education, employment status, clinical area, and position, as well as readiness for selfdirected learning influenced Canadian nurses' motivational orientations when deciding to participate in continuing education activities. Other individual differences (e.g., age) were also examined. The sample included 142 registered nurses employed at an urban community hospital. Three instruments were used for data collection: the Education Participation Scale, the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale, and a nursing survey consisting of demographic questions. Basic nursing education and employment status did not effect motivational orientation or self-directed learning readiness. Clinical area and level of position significantly influenced nurses' decisions to participate in continuing education activities. Motivational orientation had a significant relationship with selfdirected learning readiness. Implications for practice as a result of this study involves program planning and delivery. The identification of the motivational orientations of participants may assist in the development and delivery of continuing education programs that are beneficial, relevant, and address the identified learning needs of participants. Implications for future research also exist in relation to studying different groups of nurses, for example, registered nursing assistants, and investigating related issues, for example, what are the deterrents to participation in continuing education?
