Download or read book An Investigation of the Deformation and Breaking of Solitary Waves written by Frederick E. Camfield and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is proposed that solitary waves can be used as the initial wave shape to simulate the shoaling, breaking and run-up of large, long waves on a beach. Experiments were conducted with solitary waves to determine criteria for wave growth, celerity, breaking height and run-up on various beach slopes. In addition, limited investigations were made of reflected bores, effects of variations in the bottom profile, and the effect of multiple slopes, i.e., one slope followed by a second, higher slope, on the breaking and run-up of solitary waves. Further considerations are given to the method of characteristics as a means of analyzing shoaling waves. A qualitative analysis is presented of the effect of vertical acceleration terms on the solution. A comparison is made with other analytical solutions for shoaling waves. The experimental results are tabulated and plotted comparisons of the experimental results and the various analytical methods for shoaling waves are presented. (Author).

Download or read book Computer Studies of Finite amplitude Water Waves written by Stanford University. Department of Civil Engineering and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two numerical techniques are utilized to study the motion of two-dimensional, finite-amplitude water waves by using an electronic digital computer. The non-linear properties of water waves are of primary interest. The first part of the work introduces the Stanford-University-Modified MAC (SUMMAC) code which is proposed as a valid tool for analyzing incompressible, viscous flows with a free surface under transient conditions. The method is applied to the study of the solitary wave run-up on a vertical wall. The results are compared with the available experimental data and give a much better prediction of the wave run-up than the existing analytic theory. In the second part, Newton's process of successive corrections is applied to solve steady-state potential flows with free surface and gravity. A specific application to the analysis of solitary waves is made and all the wave characteristics are in excellent agreement with experiments. (Author).

This book was released on 2024-10-24 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater is a valuable source of freshwater in coastal areas. The groundwater flux in coastal aquifers generally occurs in two processes: seawater intrusion (SWI) and submarine groundwater discharge (SGD). SWI, the subsurface movement of seawater into freshwater aquifers, is a natural phenomenon in coastal areas. As a result of SWI, the salinity of groundwater in the aquifer increases, thereby reducing the availability of freshwater in coastal areas. The total efflux (including fresh groundwater and circulating seawater) to the sea is commonly referred to as SGD. SGD is an important source of freshwater, nutrients, metals, and carbon to the ocean, thereby affecting coastal water quality and ecosystems. The study of the hydrological behaviors of these two processes in coastal aquifers is beneficial for the sustainable management of marine and groundwater resources in coastal areas.
