Book excerpt: The nursing shortage continues to escalate with the deficit of registered nurses expected to approach one million. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study is to examine if and to what extent a relationship exists between student input predictor variables, student throughput predictor variables, and the successful outcome of passing NCLEX-RN on a first attempt in a Mastery Learning Teaching Approach (MLTA) pedagogy. The study examined 302 accelerated BSN students graduating between 2014-2018. Mastery learning and general systems theory provided the theoretical foundation for the study. Research question 1 examined the input predictor variables, age, gender, last 60 credit GPA and science prerequisite GPA. A simple difference of two means and a Chi-Squared Test for Independence found not enough evidence existed to predict first time NCLEX-RN passage. Question 2 focused on throughput predictor variables, Health Assessment, Adult Health I, Adult Health II, and Fundamentals. Difference of two means showed no relationship with first time NCLEX-RN passage. Research question 3 addressed whether any specific variable(s) impacted first attempt NCLEX-RN passage. A logistic regression model concluded that age (p=0.0245) and Adult Health I (p=0.0740), produced the best predictors of passing NCLEX-RN on a first attempt. Although weak, the results from this study suggest that these variables, when taught through a MLTA, may predict student success on NCLEX-RN. Future research should investigate additional predictors of NCLEX-RN passage in an accelerated BSN program using a MLTA pedagogy.

Book Determination of Variables which Predict Success on the National Council Licensure Examination NCLEX PN

Download or read book Determination of Variables which Predict Success on the National Council Licensure Examination NCLEX PN written by Mary A. Kleber and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursing is one of the most frequently chosen programs by those entering postsecondary institutions in preparation for a career. This is in part due to the job opportunities available, interest in healthcare, and a pending shortage of nurses in healthcare. One strategy for meeting this shortage is the career pathway which encompasses the concept of lifelong learning and provides a mechanism for advancement of nurses along a continuum. Regardless of the level that a student enters the nursing education continuum, failure on the national licensure exam becomes a burden to both graduates and faculty in time and resources expended. Whereas many empirical research studies have been conducted related to the registered nurse, few studies have been done related to the practical nurse. Therefore, this research study addresses the issue of background and curricular variables which predict success on the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). Descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, and logistic regression were used to determine the predictive value of the demographic (age, gender, race) and admission requirements (math, reading); curriculum variables (pre-requisite, foundation, specialty, and advanced nursing courses); and Exit Comprehensive Exam on NCLEX-PN status. The sample consisted of 411 students from 14 practical nursing programs within ten Kentucky Community and Technical Colleges. Independent Sample t Tests, Chi-square, and Correlation suggested statistically significant relationships/differences for all variables with the exception of gender, the mathematics admission exam, and number of attempts on the exit examination. The results of the logistic regression model indicated that age (p = .002) and the Exit Comprehensive Exam (p = .035) made a significant contribution to prediction of success on the NCLEX-PN on the first attempt. The demographic (gender, race); admission (math, reading); curricular, (pre-requisite, foundation, specialty, and advanced nursing courses); and mediating (number of attempts on the Exit Comprehensive Exam) variables were not significant predictors in the logistic model. These results may be used as an advisement tool for at-risk students to direct them toward interventions and resources to increase success on the NCLEX-PN.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the retrospective quantitative cohort regression study was to identify predictors of success on the Next Generation National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NGN-NCLEX-RN) and determine if changes are needed in the nursing program curriculum. Nurse educators and nursing administration are responsible for aligning the nursing curriculum with the accreditation organization's standards, adhering to the state Boards of Nursing's rules and regulations, and graduating safe and competent entry-level nurses. The most significant nursing program outcome and the key indicator of program effectiveness is the National Council of Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) first attempt passing rate. The study collected archived records of students' Elsevier Adaptive Quizzing (EAQ) scores, the highest Health Education Systems Incorporated (HESI) program exit examination scores, and the cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) to determine if these variables predicted success on the NGN-NCLEX-RN. Linda Caputi's Think Like Nurse Model provides the framework for this study to measure prelicensure undergraduate students' ability to think and learn according to the cognitive processes necessary for passing the NGN-NCLEX-RN on the first attempt. This retrospective quantitative cohort regression study design had 28 participants who graduated from a prelicensure nursing program in the southeastern United States. The participants completed EAQ assignments and the HESI exit examination during their last semester, and their cumulative GPA was available before taking the NGN-NCLEX-RN. The results show the student's highest HESI program exit examination, the EAQ score, and cumulative GPA were not statistically sufficient predictors of passing the NGN-NCLEX-RN.
