Book Materiality in Management Studies

Download or read book Materiality in Management Studies written by Noboru Matsushima and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book systematizes the materiality concept, which has been fragmented in various fields of business administration and sometimes identified with interpretive postmodern business administration, along with the meta-theories discussed in the humanities and social sciences that aim to overcome humanistic dualism. This book is devoted to developing the concept of materiality as the theoretical frontier that has not been fully addressed in management studies, ranging from daily work practices in office spaces to the manualization of high-tech aircraft maintenance, to quantified personnel evaluations and fuel efficiency standards, to innovation using advanced scientific equipment. Institutional organization theory focuses on the material on which the symbolism of institutions is inscribed. Organizational routine research seeks to unravel the material dimension of organizational performative practices. Organizational wrongdoing research critiques material measurement practice based on social constructionism. Critical management studies focus on the material space as a way to counter the humanistic concept of time. Science-based innovation challenges sociomaterialistic science practices that originate from devices for management of technology (MOT) that have not been able to penetrate into the workings of science and technology, actually. Up-and-coming researchers in Japanese management studies conduct empirical research that draws out the implications of the concept of materiality.

Book The Experience of Care in Sport

Download or read book The Experience of Care in Sport written by Emily Irene Neves McCullogh and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on power relations between coaches and athletes, as well as the abuse of a coachs power and the consequences of this abuse for athletes, is well established in both the critical socio-cultural study of sport, broadly, as well as the critical study of sport coaching. Although not all athletes have negative sport experiences, research on athlete harm and maltreatment is well documented, and much of this work has focused on identifying the spectrum of maltreatment, programmatic and policy responses to address these concerns, and the power of coaches in their sport role. However, more foundational analyses of care and caring in competitive sport remain conspicuously absent and this absence of attention to care serves as an important point of departure for this study which aims to add to and extend vitally need conversations and actions on athlete welfare through a critical socio-philosophical examination of the conceptualizations and lived experiences of care and caring within the context of Ontario youth competitive volleyball. Specifically, this study is concerned with how care is understood and constructed in the context of competitive youth sport by athletes, parents and coaches and, more pointedly, how these ideas translate to the practice of care in sport coaching. Informed by the feminist philosophical framework of the Ethics of Care (EoC), and employing institutional ethnography (IE) methodology, this project examines the conceptualizations of care within the context of one youth volleyball team in Ontario. Data from document analysis and interviews with coaches, athletes, and parents highlight the ways in which care at the institutional level focused more so on the identifying and preventing uncaring practices rather than illuminating what constitutes care, while simultaneously constructing coaches as the primary (if not sole) providers of care to athletes. Overall, the findings illuminate that care/caring remains a poorly understand but highly powerful and abstract construct in a context (i.e., competitive sport) that, at times, foregrounds performance.

Book Role Ambiguity of Head Volleyball Coaches and Strength and Conditioning Coaches in Division I Athletics

Download or read book Role Ambiguity of Head Volleyball Coaches and Strength and Conditioning Coaches in Division I Athletics written by Meredith Paskert and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Role ambiguity is common in interdependent organizations and can negatively affect employee performance and organizational effectiveness. NCAA Division I athletic departments are examples of interdependent organizations containing the collaboration of many specialized staff members. Therefore, collegiate athletic departments could be susceptible to the existence of role ambiguity. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of role ambiguity between head volleyball coaches and strength and conditioning coaches within a collegiate athletic department. Questionnaires were sent to head women’s volleyball coaches and their respective strength and conditioning coaches (who are in charge of creating and implementing strength and conditioning programs for volleyball teams) at member institutions of one NCAA Division I conference. Nine coaches participated in the study. The Role Questionnaire results (M = 5.00, SD = .63) and Role Ambiguity Scale results (M = 3.69, SD = .957) indicated that role ambiguity does not exist within this sample, however some role identification responses suggest the opposite. Future research should seek to duplicate this research with a broader sample of participants in hopes of discovering a more generalizable indication of whether or not this issue exists in NCAA athletics.

Book Observing Task and Ego Involvement in a Club Volleyball Setting

Download or read book Observing Task and Ego Involvement in a Club Volleyball Setting written by Tori Nicole Schwarzlose and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined how task and ego involvement affected 12-and-under girls' motivations to play competitive club volleyball. Participants included 25 girls under the age of 12, as well as 31 parents including those of the 25 girls. Parents and players completed the Achievement Goal Scale for Youth Survey (AGSYS), and open ended questions regarding their intention to continue playing and their motivations for trying out for club volleyball. After conducting a Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, findings suggested that the parents and the players both identified as task involved individuals, implying that their motivations lie in improving skills relative to the sport instead of becoming the best athlete relative to others on the court. The study results indicated that parents and daughters ego involvement was positively correlated demonstrating that parental motivations were reflected in player motivations confirming the impact of parental involvement in their daughter's sport decisions. A second segment included a discussion on the girls' parents and their reasons for allowing their daughter to play in club volleyball as reflected in a task and ego involvement framework. Previously conducted studies have been completed in an attempt to discover parental motivations for allowing their child to try out for a competitive team. Research has examined specific youth motivations. Most prominent results from youth focused research include the opportunity to build social relations and boost self-efficacy regarding playing competitive sports (Allen, 2003). Minimal research has focused on understanding the relationship between parent and child motivations for youth participation in competitive sports. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parent and youth motivation for trying out for club volleyball using a task and ego involvement framework. The information collected will be on display for youth development practitioners who assist in programs involving youth, parents and competitive sports. The findings assist in establishing research that provides information to competitive youth club managers so they can establish their club based on research based findings from both the parents and players perspectives. Book Systematic Observation of Coach Feedback in Elite Youth Volleyball

Download or read book Systematic Observation of Coach Feedback in Elite Youth Volleyball written by Mark David Mann and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to understand the relationship of coach feedback during time-outs to the performance of 16--18 year old volleyball players in competitive match play situations. The systematic observation of coach feedback during 89 time-outs was recorded using the Coach Time-Out Observation Instrument (CTOOI). Out of the 879 feedback statements that were made during the 89 time-outs, the CTOOI categorized coach feedback for technical feedback (with an internal or an external focus), tactical feedback (referring to our team or the opponent), and psychological feedback (as either encouraging or discouraging remarks). Data from the Game Performance Assessment Instrument (GPAI) were collected for the "quarterback of the volleyball team:" the setter. Data were collected to evaluate setter performance for the four rallies before the time-out and the four rallies immediately after the time-out. The GPAI measured setter positioning, decision making, and skill execution. The multiple regression analysis did not show any feedback strategy to be significant for the entire group of setters in terms of performance improvement. However, as the literature on coach feedback had suggested, when the setters were divided into groups of higher and lower skilled setters, significance was found for certain coach feedback types in each group of setters. For higher skilled setters, significant improvement in setter performance (p = .03) came from feedback that was tactically oriented towards the opponent in combination with technical internal feedback. For lower skilled setters, setter decision-making was improved significantly (p= .05) by time-out feedback characterized by psychologically encouraging over and above discouraging remarks that were made during the time-out

Book Through the Eyes of Parents Children and a Coach

Download or read book Through the Eyes of Parents Children and a Coach written by Steven Aicinena and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing for coaches and parents involved in youth sport, Aicinena (kinesiology, U. of Texas at Permian Basin) examines, through a sociological lens, the roots of conflicts that commonly occur in an athletic arena. He argues that different individuals view athletics through different sports participation models. His goal is to describe the models and explain how they are conditioned by socialization. Recognition of the models should serve to minimize conflict. Aicinene has been a researcher, parent, and coach for 14 years. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
