Book A Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of the Oxidation of Molybdenum at Temperatures at which Its Trioxide is Volatile

This book was released on 1966 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical and experimental investigation of the oxidation of molybdenum to molybdenum trioxide at temperatures at which the trioxide is volatile has been carried out. A rate equation has been derived which includes the effects of mass-transfer parameters as well chemical parameters and is applicable to any situation for which a mass-transfer coefficient can be obtained. The derived equation has been applied to previously reported rate data taken under laboratory conditions using air and oxygen-helium mix-reported rate data taken under laboratory conditions using air and oxygen-helium mixtures flowing at low subsonic velocities, and a set of values for the activation energy of the oxidation of molybdenum has been obtained. The average of these values is 8.51 x 107 J-(kg-mole)−1 (20.3 kcal-(g-mole)−1) with a standard deviation of 2.1 percent. In addition, 32 molybdenum hemisphere-cylinder specimens have been oxidized in a Mach 2.1 heated airstream at a free-stream stagnation pressure of 1.07 x 106 N-m-−2 (10.5 atm) and free-stream stagnation temperatures from 1765°K to 2120°K. The stagnation-point surface temperature and recession rate were determined for each of the specimens. The observed recession rates were compared with the corresponding values predicted theoretically by the derived rate equation and agreement within a factor of about 2 was obtained for most specimens. However, a few specimens ignited, exhibiting recession rates much greater than those predicted theoretically. The high recession rates associated with ignition were found to be the result of a sharp rise in surface temperature which caused some melting of the specimens in addition to their normal oxidation.

Book NASA Contributions to Development of Special purpose Thermocouples A Survey

Download or read book NASA Contributions to Development of Special purpose Thermocouples A Survey written by Calvin Eugene Moeller and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern industry the thermocouple plays an important role in temperature instrumentation. The increasing need for temperature measurements in extreme environments has produced significant advancements in thermo couple technology; much of this technology has come from research in the aerospace and atomic energy areas. This survey reviews developments resulting from work performed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and its contractors. The main thrust of the survey is to encourage non-aerospace applications of the results of aerospace research.

Book Development of High temperature Strain Gages

Download or read book Development of High temperature Strain Gages written by J. W. Pitts and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary is presented of a research program aimed at the improvement of high-temperature strain gages of the electrical resistance type. Potential ceramic and metal components were evaluated and a gage was devised that was based on these evaluations. This gage (NBS 5B) was flexible and easy to install; however, it lacked resistance stability at higher temperatures. In an attempt to minimize this deficiency, ceramic cements were developed that showed greater electrical resistivity than had been previously observed in the range 800 to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit; also, a technique was devised for increasing the resistance to ground by applying a fired-on ceramic coating to the grid of a specifically developed unbacked gage. A study was made of the cause of the erratic response of cemented gages that had not been preheated prior to use. There were strong indications that the erratic response was caused mostly by the rapid decrease in resistance that accompanied structural changes in the cement.
