Book Theoretical and Experimental Methods for Defending Against DDoS Attacks

Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Methods for Defending Against DDoS Attacks written by Iraj Sadegh Amiri and published by Syngress. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Denial of Service (DoS) attacks are a form of attack that seeks to make a network resource unavailable due to overloading the resource or machine with an overwhelming number of packets, thereby crashing or severely slowing the performance of the resource. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) is a large scale DoS attack which is distributed in the Internet. Every computer which has access to the Internet can behave as an attacker. Typically bandwidth depletion can be categorized as either a flood or an amplification attack. Flood attacks can be done by generating ICMP packets or UDP packets in which it can utilize stationary or random variable ports. Smurf and Fraggle attacks are used for amplification attacks. DDoS Smurf attacks are an example of an amplification attack where the attacker sends packets to a network amplifier with the return address spoofed to the victim’s IP address. This book presents new research and methodologies along with a proposed algorithm for prevention of DoS attacks that has been written based on cryptographic concepts such as birthday attacks to estimate the rate of attacks generated and passed along the routers. Consequently, attackers would be identified and prohibited from sending spam traffic to the server which can cause DDoS attacks. Due to the prevalence of DoS attacks, there has been a lot of research conducted on how to detect them and prevent them. The authors of this short format title provide their research results on providing an effective solution to DoS attacks, including introduction of the new algorithm that can be implemented in order to deny DoS attacks. A comprehensive study on the basics of network security Provides a wide revision on client puzzle theory An experimental model to mitigate distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks

Book Identifying Denial of Service attacks and appropriate mitigation strategies for Small to Medium Sized Enterprises

Download or read book Identifying Denial of Service attacks and appropriate mitigation strategies for Small to Medium Sized Enterprises written by Andy Reed and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-02-11 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Computer Science - IT-Security, grade: Merit, The Open University, course: MSc Advanced Networking, language: English, abstract: This research report investigated the potential risks from DoS (Denial of Service) attacks faced by SMEs (Small to Medium-sized Enterprises) that have an online presence. From the examination of case studies, reports, global surveys, and discussions with IT professionals this report evaluates which DoS attacks are the most prolific, and which DoS threats organisations need to secure against. From the results of the investigation it can be seen that the potential risk of becoming the target of a DoS attack continues to pose a significant threat to an organisation regardless of the size. It was evident from the results of the initial research that further investigation was required to evaluate which DoS threat were of most concern to SMEs (Small to Medium sized Enterprises). Through practical experimentation in a controlled network laboratory environment, a number of DoS attacks that are of current concern to SMEs were investigated, the main purpose of this investigation was to evaluate appropriate mitigation strategies to secure against the identified DoS attacks. This report concludes by highlighting that SMEs may be susceptible to well-known DoS attacks when deploying network hardware in default configuration, and by identifying the appropriate DoS mitigation options available to network and security administrators associated with SMEs. The conclusion also shows how these DoS mitigation options can be practically applied to the type of network hardware typically deployed in a SME environment.

Book Distributed Denial of Service DDoS Attack Detection and Mitigation

Download or read book Distributed Denial of Service DDoS Attack Detection and Mitigation written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 758 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is an organised distributed packet-storming technique that aims to overload network devices and the communication channels between them. Its major objective is to prevent legitimate users from accessing networks, servers, services, or other computer resources. In this thesis, we propose, implement and evaluate a DDoS Detector approach consisting of detection, defence and knowledge sharing components. The detection component is designed to detect known and unknown DDoS attacks using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) while the defence component prevents forged DDoS packets from reaching the victim. DDoS Detectors are distributed across one or more networks in order to mitigate the strength of a DDoS attack. The knowledge sharing component uses encrypted messages to inform other DDoS Detectors when it detects a DDoS attack. This mechanism increases the efficacy of the detection mechanism between the DDoS Detectors. This approach has been evaluated and tested against other related approaches in terms of Sensitivity, Specificity, False Positive Rate (FPR), Precision, and Detection Accuracy. A major contribution of the research is that this approach achieves a 98% DDoS detection and mitigation accuracy, which is 5% higher than the best result of previous related approaches.

Book Seven Deadliest Network Attacks

Download or read book Seven Deadliest Network Attacks written by Stacy Prowell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-06-02 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven Deadliest Network Attacks identifies seven classes of network attacks and discusses how the attack works, including tools to accomplish the attack, the risks of the attack, and how to defend against the attack. This book pinpoints the most dangerous hacks and exploits specific to networks, laying out the anatomy of these attacks including how to make your system more secure. You will discover the best ways to defend against these vicious hacks with step-by-step instruction and learn techniques to make your computer and network impenetrable. The book consists of seven chapters that deal with the following attacks: denial of service; war dialing; penetration testing; protocol tunneling; spanning tree attacks; man-in-the-middle; and password replay. These attacks are not mutually exclusive and were chosen because they help illustrate different aspects of network security. The principles on which they rely are unlikely to vanish any time soon, and they allow for the possibility of gaining something of interest to the attacker, from money to high-value data. This book is intended to provide practical, usable information. However, the world of network security is evolving very rapidly, and the attack that works today may (hopefully) not work tomorrow. It is more important, then, to understand the principles on which the attacks and exploits are based in order to properly plan either a network attack or a network defense. Seven Deadliest Network Attacks will appeal to information security professionals of all levels, network admins, and recreational hackers. Knowledge is power, find out about the most dominant attacks currently waging war on computers and networks globally Discover the best ways to defend against these vicious attacks; step-by-step instruction shows you how Institute countermeasures, don’t be caught defenseless again, and learn techniques to make your computer and network impenetrable

Book New Methods for Detection of DoS and DDoS Attacks

Download or read book New Methods for Detection of DoS and DDoS Attacks written by K. Munivara Prasad and published by Mohammed Abdul Sattar. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Internet revolution has completely changed the traditional ways of functioning of essential applications including banking, healthcare, defense, academic, and logistics. Internet-based services replaced these traditional services at a rapid pace over the past two decades. Growth in internet-dependency of individuals and entities resulted that the internet is the fundamental support for the information world. The emergence of new Internet-based services such as e- governance, e-procurement, and other services are contributing significantly to the global, social and economic development. With the exponential growth in Internet-based services and users worldwide, the internet infrastructure and services are facing numerous challenges related to continuous attacks. Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) is one of the most observed attacks over internet architecture, posturing robust challenges to defense mechanisms incorporated in the framework. As the DDoS attack information is not made public by companies (to avoid deterioration of brand value), researchers often face the problem of the limited information available to design effective defensive strategies against DDoS attacks. The current section presents the impact of DDoS attack and the inherent vulnerability of the internet architecture. Real events of DDoS attack together with their financial impact on companies are included. Further, the need for designing an efficient DDoS defense strategy is presented in the research work. The internet resources and network systems should be readily accessible for genuine users who aim to use the services at any specific time . Unavailability of internet services and applications at the required instance is one of the major challenges restricting the spread of Internet-based services. The unavailability can results to either intentional causes or accidental causes. The basic internet framework is designed to handle accidental failures but is not efficient against intentional purposes such as intrusion, malware, hacking, etc. The Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack is categorized under intentional failures observed on the internet, which are caused by malware programmers or intruders. These attackers deny or compromise the availability of internet resources to genuine or authorized users.
