Book excerpt: This textbook is an introduction to the subject of inverse problems with an emphasis on practical solution methods and applications from geophysics. The treatment is mathematically rigorous, relying on calculus and linear algebra only; familiarity with more advanced mathematical theories like functional analysis is not required. Containing up-to-date methods, this book will provide readers with the tools necessary to compute regularized solutions of inverse problems. A variety of practical examples from geophysics are used to motivate the presentation of abstract mathematical ideas, thus assuring an accessible approach. Beginning with four examples of inverse problems, the opening chapter establishes core concepts, such as formalizing these problems as equations in vector spaces and addressing the key issue of ill-posedness. Chapter Two then moves on to the discretization of inverse problems, which is a prerequisite for solving them on computers. Readers will be well-prepared for the final chapters that present regularized solutions of inverse problems in finite-dimensional spaces, with Chapter Three covering linear problems and Chapter Four studying nonlinear problems. Model problems reflecting scenarios of practical interest in the geosciences, such as inverse gravimetry and full waveform inversion, are fully worked out throughout the book. They are used as test cases to illustrate all single steps of solving inverse problems, up to numerical computations. Five appendices include the mathematical foundations needed to fully understand the material. This second edition expands upon the first, particularly regarding its up-to-date treatment of nonlinear problems. Following the author’s approach, readers will understand the relevant theory and methodology needed to pursue more complex applications. Inverse Problems is ideal for graduate students and researchers interested in geophysics and geosciences.

Book Magnetotellurics in the Context of the Theory of Ill posed Problems

Download or read book Magnetotellurics in the Context of the Theory of Ill posed Problems written by Mark Naumovich Berdichevskiĭ and published by SEG Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume serves as an introduction to modern magnetotellurics originating with the pioneering work of Tikhonov and Cagniard. It presents a comprehensive summary of theoretical and methodological aspects of magnetotellurics. It provides a bridge between textbooks on electrical prospecting and numerous papers on magnetotelluric methods scattered among various geophysical journals and collections. The book has been written in the terms of the theory of ill-posed problems and contains a special chapter encouraging readers to master the elements of this theory that defines the philosophy of the physical experiment. The book thus offers the connected and consistent account of the principles of magnetotellurics from that single viewpoint. The book also brings together developments from many sources and involves some little-known results developed in Russia in Tikhonov's magnetotellurics school. Of particular interest are concluding chapters of the book that demonstrate the potential of magnetotellurics in oil and gas surveys, including discovery of the Urengoy gas field in Western Siberia, one of the largest gas fields in the world. This potential also is revealed in studies of the earth's crust and upper mantle.

Book Geophysical Inverse Theory

Download or read book Geophysical Inverse Theory written by Robert L. Parker and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1994-06-05 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many physical sciences, the most natural description of a system is with a function of position or time. In principle, infinitely many numbers are needed to specify that function, but in practice only finitely many measurements can be made. Inverse theory concerns the mathematical techniques that enable researchers to use the available information to build a model of the unknown system or to determine its essential properties. In Geophysical Inverse Theory, Robert Parker provides a systematic development of inverse theory at the graduate and professional level that emphasizes a rigorous yet practical solution of inverse problems, with examples from experimental observations in geomagnetism, seismology, gravity, electromagnetic sounding, and interpolation. Although illustrated with examples from geophysics, this book has broad implications for researchers in applied disciplines from materials science and engineering to astrophysics, oceanography, and meteorology. Parker's approach is to avoid artificial statistical constructs and to emphasize instead the reasonable assumptions researchers must make to reduce the ambiguity that inevitably arises in complex problems. The structure of the book follows a natural division in the subject into linear theory, in which the measured quantities are linear functionals of the unknown models, and nonlinear theory, which covers all other systems but is not nearly so well understood. The book covers model selection as well as techniques for drawing firm conclusions about the earth independent of any particular model.
