Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Logic This volume is intended primarily as a text-book for college students, and grew out of my lectures on Logic to undergraduate classes in Cornell University. It aims at being both practical and theoretical. In spite of the obvious deficiencies of formal Logic as a theory of the nature of thought, I am convinced that it is one of the most valuable instruments in modern education for promoting clear thinking, and for developing critical habits of mind. J. S. Mill, speaking in the Autobiography of the discipline which he received from working logical exercises, expresses the following opinion: "I am persuaded that nothing, in modern education, tends so much, when properly used, to form exact thinkers, who attach a precise meaning to words and propositions, and are not imposed on by vague, loose, or ambiguous terms." Although in treating the syllogistic Logic I have followed to a large extent the ordinary mode of presentation, I have both here, and when dealing with the Inductive Methods, endeavoured to interpret the traditional doctrines in a philosophical way, and to prepare for the theoretical discussions of the third part of the book. The advisability of attempting to include a theory of thought, or philosophy of knowledge, even in outline, in an elementary course in Logic, may at first sight appear doubtful. It seems to me, however, that this inclusion is not only justifiable, but even necessary at the present time. The result has been to re duce the attention that was formerly given to ele mentary instruction in logic and to displace the traditional course from its originally dominant posi tion in the university curriculum. The conviction is abroad that the ancient organon is so far inferior to the modern instrument perfected by the critical labors of Peano, Frege, Russell, and others, that it no longer deserves the attention once bestowed upon it. These objections the writer has endeavored to meet, in the first instance by introducing no symbols whatever, save the ones employed by traditional logic itself, so that the treatment may be followed by any intelligent reader, and secondly by keeping modern developments always in mind while following the traditional order of treatment. Finally, he has met the recent contention that the classical system does not hold true in all of its parts, by showing in the last chapter of this work that. A distinction is Often made between Natural and Artificial Logic, Natural Logic means the natural reasoning that leads men to Truth, or that would do so, if it were possible for them always to follow the light Of reason. Artificial Logic may be briefly called the science of Natural Logic, for it does no more than give an exact and methodical Shape to the rules delivered by nature; just as in music, or painting, or sculpture, the technicalities Of the art merely throw natural rules into order and method.
