The ordinary methods of teaching English grammar do little to establish a correct use of language. The text-books in common use appeal chiefly to the memory. They are placed in the hands of young pupils who memorize them, and, perhaps, recite satisfactory lessons, but the real result is the acquirement of many terms and definitions, which convey but little meaning, and give but little mental growth. For the duties of life he is but little better fitted than though he had not "finished" English grammar.
