Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of English Fiction There was a time when by people with pretensions to a careful conscience the novel was regarded somewhat dubiously. That time, let us hope, is of the past. The existence of the novel as a work of fiction requires no vindication; no apology is needed for its pre - eminence in the popular taste of the day. Not only are we compelled to recognize the present supremacy of fiction, we have also come to the point of appreciating its utility and power. The development of English fiction, the evolution of the English novel, forms in itself an interesting story; and an acquaintance with that story is essential to an apprehension of the real qualities of our fiction and to an intelligent estimate of its originality and its merits. To tell this story in outline and to indicate the characteristics of successive epochs in its growth is the purpose of this volume. Th teacher may find it difficult to recognize the text-book in the preliminary chapters: he is reminded that these chapters form but the preface, and that his text-book begins with what comes after. With reference to the Selections, a word may be not amiss The translations from Beowulf and King Horn are rude enough, and it might have been wiser in the writer to utilize the labors of a more clever translator; he preferred, however, a version original albeit uncouth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Literature I must therefore ask the reader to remember that this book is planned as a guide and companion to his own study, and that, while I hope it may be interesting and suggestive in itself, the value of the things said in it must ultimately be sought in their application. It will be found that little place is given to questions of abstract aesthetics. These, as well as all details of a purely scholastic character, have been purposely avoided, as my desire throughout has been to make my volume literature is primarily a means of enjoyment and a help to life. I have to thank my friend, the Rev. Albert E. Sims, for the invaluable assistance which, as on various former occasions, he has again rendered me in my proof-reading and in the settlement of the many troublesome little points which are certain to arise when a book of this kind is passing through the press. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of English Literature: From the Earliest Times to the Close of the Victorian Age The study of literature is, rightly, a pursuit in which the faculties are liberated and disciplined by the freshness and variety of imaginative experience, and are made strong and supple so that they learn to enjoy the pleasure of their own activity. The follow ing pages attempt to present the outlines of English literature in accordance with this ideal. The book is offered as a companion to studies, not as a short cut to a superficial and specious knowledge of the classics of our language. It does not seek to pronounce any final criticism, or to dictate on matters of judgment or taste; for these are the greatest disservices a teacher can render to a student. Its intention is, rather, to prospect in company with the reader, to unearth and investigate clues with him, to lure his curiosity, and to challenge him to thought. The student will eventually discover that certain periods or writers are more to his taste than others; he will require, above all, bibliographical guidance. This he will find in The Cambridge History of English Literature, to which this Primer may serve as an introduction. Book The Typical Forms of English Literature

Download or read book The Typical Forms of English Literature written by Alfred H. Upham and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Typical Forms of English Literature: An Introduction to the Historical and Critical Study of English Literature for College Classes This book, derived from several years of experience with college classes, is intended primarily to be used with the now popular introductory courses in literature that approach their subject by way of representative types or literary forms. It undertakes to provide for a number of these typical forms a somewhat extended account of their development as phases of art, a briefer statement of their accepted standards of technique, a suggestive list of topics for study, and a bibliography of collections and critical discussions. It is not intended to supplant the reading and interpretation of literary documents, but rather to supply a basis of understanding and conviction, upon which such interpretations can be made more intelligently. Hitherto such material has been brought to the attention of students by means of lectures, or through assigned readings in various books of reference. But freshmen and sophomores in college are not skilled in note-taking, and the reference reading they do is often poorly digested. It should be an immense advantage to have in their hands a readable syllabus of this fundamental information. Just how the book may be employed most effectively must be determined by individual instructors. Some will omit certain types and chapters, as the time allotted to the course may require. The author himself presents the drama in a separate course. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the English Classics The purpose of this book is to stimulate, in teachers and students alike, interest in the English Classics selected for use in schools, and to suggest various methods by which these masterpieces may be profitably studied. The book embodies the actual experience of teachers in the classroom, in that the analyses of most of the volumes studied and the accompanying questions have been prepared by men and women who have themselves edited one or more of the Classics and have actually taught them. The work of these collaborators has been brought into some uniformity of method, but Without injuring, it is hoped, the suggestiveness and variety and particular method of each contributor. Book The Study of a Novel Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Study of a Novel Classic Reprint written by Selden L. Whitcomb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of a Novel This volume is the result of practical experience in teaching the novel, and its aim is primarily pedagogical. It is only within the last few decades that the novel has been given much separate attention in college courses, and it cannot be hoped that any detailed method of study, at so early a date, can be more than an experiment and a tempo rary contribution. But it has been nearly a half-century since Senior conceived a treatise on Fiction, illustrated by examples, and some ten years since Professor Newcomer wrote (in a Practical Course in English Composition) that fiction would require a special treatise even for its tech nical side. Such fulfilment as has been made of these prophecies has been mainly in the field of the Short story. The present writer has ventured into the field of the novel, with a sense that the time had come for tillage, even though the crop might be partly of weeds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of English: Literature an Address to Young Men and Women With so much by way of general introduction, let me try, taking a few suggestions out of the mass, to point out some of the ways in which the love of literature may be of service to us in enlarging, sweetening, and beautifying life. We will first revert to a point already touched upon. On practical grounds it is, as I have said, often urged, and even more frequently felt, that to cultivate a taste for books which do not contain useful knowledge is mere waste of time. They will not help us to gain a living; they will not make us more successful in business; they have no direct bearings on practical affairs; can we afford, therefore, to spend our energies upon them when there is so much that we must learn if we are to keep step with the rapid march of civilization? The spirit which dictates such an argument as this is not simply the spirit of the active man of the world, who estimates everything by its money-getting power: it is the spirit also of many modern leaders in education, who are coming more and more to insist that there is but one standard of educa tional values, the direct utility of knowledge in the busi ness of life. Book An Introduction to English Medieval Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to English Medieval Literature Classic Reprint written by Charles Sears Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to English Medieval Literature The recent abundance of reprints and translations marks a second approach toward the recovery of the middle age. While the previous generation of historians was dispelling the legendary darkness of this dark age the critics turned the connotation of Gothic from pity to praise. Pity for the middle age became so antiquated that enthusiasts ventured even to demand worship instead. What remained for our time was more exact appreciation through an increasing availability of medieval literature. To the widely interesting body of literature now at hand in English I have tried here to furnish a students' guide. This book is not for scholars. They are provided already. What seemed to be lacking was such a brief manual as should open the main literary significances to students not specially trained. Therefore, though the discussion necessarily includes works written in Latin and Old French, and relies, of course, on foreign as well as English scholarship, the citations and the suggestions for further study are generally limited to works accessible in English. What I have thus tried to provide is, not a substitute for close study, but an introduction. Meantime even a general survey of English medieval literature corrects perspective. The larger literary interests and habits of the time, even when some of them are discerned through translations, open the way for truer appreciation of later interests. For the comprehension of later, more complex forms also, the best preparation is study of the earlier and simpler forms.
