This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Structural and Systematic Botany, and Vegetable Physiology: Being a Fifth and Revised Edition of the Botanical Text-Book, Illustrated With Over Thirteen Hundred Woodcuts I. Botany is the Natural History of the Vegetable Kingdom. The vegetable kingdom consists of those beings (called plants) which derive their sustenance from the mineral kingdom, that is from the earth and air, and create the food upon which animals live. The proof of this proposition will be hereafter afforded, in the chapter upon the food and nutrition of plants. The vegetable kingdom, therefore, occupies a position between the mineral and the animal kingdoms. Comprehensively considered, Botany ac cordingly embraces every scientific inquiry that can be made respecting plants, their nature, their kinds, the laws which gov ern them, and the part they play in the general economy of the world, - their relations both to the lifeless mineral kingdom below them, from which they draw their sustenance, and to the animal kingdom above, endowed with higher Vitality, to which in turn they render what they have thus derived. Book An Introduction to Botany Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to Botany Classic Reprint written by John Lindley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Botany I have begun with what is called organography (book I or an explanation of the exact structure of plants; abranch of the subject which comprehends all that relates either to the various forms of tissue of which vegetables are constructed, or to the external appearance their elementary organs assume in a state of combination. It is exceedingly desirable that these topics should be well understood, because they form the basis of all other parts of the science. In physiology, every function is executed through the agency of the organs: systematic arrangements de pend upon characters arising out of their consider ation; and descriptive Botany can have no logical precision without the principles of Organography are first exactly settled. A difference of Opinion exists among the most distinguished botanists, upon some points connected with this subject, so that it has been found expedient to enter occasionally'into much detail, for the purpose of' satisfying the student of' the accuracy of' the facts and reasonings upon which he is expected to rely. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vegetable Physiology Systematic Botany Systematic Botany, the author would remark, that the reasons which have induced him to prefer the Natural System to the Linnaan, - the latter having been hitherto almost universally employed in elementary treatises on Botany - will be found fully stated in Chapter XIII. He has not aimed to give an account of every order, since this would have been of very little use to the beginner. In making a selection, he has regarded those as having the best claim to notice, which contain plants of the greatest importance to man, or which present some re markable peculiarities of structure or habit; a few have been introduced, however, which possess neither of these distinctions, either as containing well-known British plants, or on account of their great abundance in parti cular spots of the globe. The Cryptogamia have not been treated of in this. Division of the work, since a general view of their chief groups is contained in Chapter II. Download or read book Introduction to Structural and Systematic Botany and Vegetable Physiology written by Asa Gray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Structural and Systematic Botany, and Vegetable Physiology: Being a Fifth and Revised Edition of the Botanical Text-Book, Illustrated With Over Thirteen Hundred Woodcuts This compendious treatise is designed to furnish classes in the higher seminaries of learning, colleges, and medical schools, as well as private students generally, with a suitable text-book of Structural and Physiological Botany, and a convenient introduction to Systematic or Descriptive Botany, adapted to the present condition of the science. The favor with which the former editions have been received, while it has satisfied the author that the plan of the work is well adapted to the end in view, has made him the more desirous to improve its execution, and to render it a better exponent of the present state of Botany. In this view, the structural and physiological part of the work, and the chapters on the Principles of Classification and of the Natural System, have been again almost entirely rewritten, and such changes made as the advanced state of our knowledge required, or the author's continued experience in teaching has suggested. This has been done without increasing the extent of this part of the volume, which, considering the limited time devoted to the study in our colleges, &c., is found to be as full as is desirable for a textbook.
