Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF NEW ZEALAND EDUCATION gives an overview of the New Zealand education system from the nineteenth century to the present. It shows that many educational issues of the past are still concerns today. The book is aimed at students of education, parents, and teachers, as well as members of the general public who are interested in how factors as diverse as poverty, secularism, sanitation, outdoor education, geographical isolation, and migration have all shaped the system to give it its 'kiwi' character. It covers a range of topics including unequal educational achievement, the history of teachers and teacher education, Maori education, and new settlers. Specific chapters describe changing attitudes to gender, disability, socio-economic class and ethnicity and how education is affected by these changes. All educational sectors are discussed: early childhood, primary, secondary and tertiary. The book contains an introduction by New Zealand's eminent educational historian, Professor Roger Openshaw.

Book Handbook of Indigenous Education

Download or read book Handbook of Indigenous Education written by Elizabeth Ann McKinley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a state-of-the-art reference work that defines and frames the state of thinking, research and practice in indigenous education. The book provides an authoritative overview of the subject in one text. The work sits within the context of The UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples that states “Indigenous peoples have the right to the dignity and diversity of their cultures, traditions, histories and aspirations which shall be appropriately reflected in education” (Article 14.1). Twenty-five years ago a book of this nature would have been largely written by non-Indigenous researchers about Indigenous people and education. Today Indigenous researchers can write this work about and for themselves and others. The book is comprehensive in its coverage. Authors are drawn from various individual jurisdictions that have significant indigenous populations where the issues include language, culture and identity, and indigenous people’s participation in society. It brings together multiple streams of research by ‘new’ indigenous voices. The book also brings together a wide range of educational topics including early childhood education, educational governance, teacher education, curriculum, pedagogy, educational psychology, etc. The focus of one body of work on Indigenous education is a welcome enhancement to the pursuit of the field of Indigenous educational aspirations and development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ka rite te kopara e ko nei i te ata. It is like a bellbird singing at dawn. Like the clear morning song of te koparapara, the bellbird, this book aims to allow the Maori world to speak for itself through an accessible introduction to Maori culture, history and society from an indigenous perspective. In twenty-one illustrated chapters, leading scholars introduce Maori culture (including tikanga on and off the marae and key rituals like powhiri and tangihanga), Maori history (from the beginning of the world and the waka migration through to Maori protest and urbanisation in the twentieth century), and Maori society today (including twenty-first century issues like education, health, political economy and identity). Each chapter provides a descriptive narrative covering the major themes, written in accessible formal English, including appropriate references to te reo Maori and to the wider Pacific. Chapters are illustrated with a mixture of images, maps and diagrams as well as relevant songs and sayings. Te Koparapara is an authoritative and accessible introduction to the past, present and future of the Maori world for students and general readers. Ko te manu kai i te miro nona te ngahere, ko te manu kai i te matauranga nona te ao. The bird that feasts on miro tree berries belongs to the bush, the bird that feasts on knowledge belongs to the world.

Book Separate But Equal

Download or read book Separate But Equal written by J. M. Barrington and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A system of government primary schools for Māori children created by Parliament in 1867 was regarded as a temporary measure until they learnt English and were Europeanised. But it lasted for 100 years despite criticisms of 'separatism' and 'pampering' of Māori. Barrington is the foremost historian of the schools. In this book he draws on an extensive range of new material, including theses, Waitangi Tribunal research and oral history projects, to tell their story, together with those of the Māori denominational boarding schools and state Maori district high schools. The voices of Māori on schooling, which remained largely hidden in many earlier studies, are given a new prominence.
