Book excerpt: In July 1980, the National Library of Australia issued a draft proposal for an automated national bibliographic service based on an online shared cataloguing facility. In the latter half of that same year, the National Library held widespread consultations, in all capital cities except Darwin, with libraries and consortia thought likely to be interested in evaluating the draft proposal. The present document represents an attempt to incorporate as much of the constructive comment forthcoming from these consultations as possible, in the proposal for what has become known as ABN (Australian Bibliographic Network). Included are network considerations, network services, costs and charges, governance, and consortia and their relation to ABN. (GP).
