Book Neurobiology of Chemical Communication

Download or read book Neurobiology of Chemical Communication written by Carla Mucignat-Caretta and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-02-14 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intraspecific communication involves the activation of chemoreceptors and subsequent activation of different central areas that coordinate the responses of the entire organism—ranging from behavioral modification to modulation of hormones release. Animals emit intraspecific chemical signals, often referred to as pheromones, to advertise their presence to members of the same species and to regulate interactions aimed at establishing and regulating social and reproductive bonds. In the last two decades, scientists have developed a greater understanding of the neural processing of these chemical signals. Neurobiology of Chemical Communication explores the role of the chemical senses in mediating intraspecific communication. Providing an up-to-date outline of the most recent advances in the field, it presents data from laboratory and wild species, ranging from invertebrates to vertebrates, from insects to humans. The book examines the structure, anatomy, electrophysiology, and molecular biology of pheromones. It discusses how chemical signals work on different mammalian and non-mammalian species and includes chapters on insects, Drosophila, honey bees, amphibians, mice, tigers, and cattle. It also explores the controversial topic of human pheromones. An essential reference for students and researchers in the field of pheromones, this is also an ideal resource for those working on behavioral phenotyping of animal models and persons interested in the biology/ecology of wild and domestic species.

Book Honeybee Veterinary Medicine

Download or read book Honeybee Veterinary Medicine written by Nicolas Vidal-Naquet and published by 5m Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honeybees are an essential part of farming and the wider ecosystem. Since the middle of the 1990s bee populations around the world have suffered dramatic decline through diseases, intoxication, and unknown causes. Veterinarians have had little training in bee health but as the situation continues, qualified animal health professionals and, in particular, veterinarians are being required to become involved as new dangers threaten honeybee health everywhere because of global apiculture trade and exchanges of honeybees, products of the hive and beekeeping material such as Aethina tumida (the small hive beetle - a beekeeping pest) introduced in Italy in 2014 or the mite Tropilaelaps spp (parasitic mites of honeybees). This book will provide an overview of bee biology, the bee in the wider environment, intoxication, bee diseases, bee parasites (with a large part dedicated to the mite Varroa destructor) pests, enemies, and veterinary treatment and actions relating to honeybee health. The book will also cover current topics such as climate change, crop pollination, use of phytosanitary products, antibiotic resistance, and Colony Collapse Disorder. While aimed at veterinary practitioners, students and veterinarians involved in apiculture and bee health (officials, researchers, laboratory veterinarians, biologists...), the book can also be beneficial to beekeepers, beekeeping stakeholders, animal health and environmental organisations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to harvest delicious honey in your backyard to give your flowers the boost they need? You’ve always had a bit of a green thumb, planting both food crops and flowers. But recent years have been disappointing, and you’re considering scaling back your garden. That’s when you visit your friend. They’re always up to something, and this year is no different. Walking up to their house, you’re greeted by a garden that is positively bursting with color. The backyard is remarkably, even better. How did they do it? “Bees,” says your friend, casually. The bee colonies they started a couple of years ago have ensured fully pollinated plants and great harvests. This, not to mention the side business he started selling the honey and wax. They suggest you do it, too. There are a lot of reasons to keep bees, including: ⚫Pollinating your other plants ⚫Improving harvests ⚫Harvesting honey, wax, and pollen ⚫Getting outside more often ⚫Supporting the local ecosystem ⚫Starting a business In recent years, there has substantial growth in urban agriculture and homesteading. This includes beekeeping. Aside from the benefits of a better garden and outdoor activity, it helps the ecology and food supply. The Food and Agriculture Organization predicts that if the trend continues, by 2035 the common honeybee might disappear. This means that at a macro-level these highly-effective pollinators are needed more than ever. In addition to making a valuable contribution to the world, beekeeping is a meditative and relaxing activity. Handling bees with ease in full gear, you can’t help but look like a rockstar. Of course, there is work and learning involved, but this effort can be invigorating, even before considering all the other benefits. The first step is figuring out if beekeeping is for you and then starting small, step by step, to get firsthand experience. Here’s a select sample of what you’ll discover in Beekeeping for Beginners: ⚫Step by step instructions for setting up and cultivating your bee colonies ⚫Drones, workers, and queen, oh my! Understanding bee colony dynamics for a happy hive ⚫Gardening for bees – finding your bee’s favorite plants for productive colonies ⚫A complete list of considerations and expectations to determine if beekeeping is for you ⚫Building your beehive with effective design and straightforward construction ⚫Protecting your hive from common threats and keeping them healthy ⚫How to find the necessary support to avoid costly mistakes And much more. Some people are resistant to starting bee colonies because the thought of being around a lot of bees can be intimidating. The key is to wear the right gear, start small with just a couple of colonies, and practice the techniques to build facility and confidence. After a while, the bees become just a normal part of the routine. If you want to level up your garden and do something epic this year, scroll up and click the ‘Add to Cart’ button.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich and surprising exploration of the intelligence of bees Most of us are aware of the hive mind—the power of bees as an amazing collective. But do we know how uniquely intelligent bees are as individuals? In The Mind of a Bee, Lars Chittka draws from decades of research, including his own pioneering work, to argue that bees have remarkable cognitive abilities. He shows that they are profoundly smart, have distinct personalities, can recognize flowers and human faces, exhibit basic emotions, count, use simple tools, solve problems, and learn by observing others. They may even possess consciousness. Taking readers deep into the sensory world of bees, Chittka illustrates how bee brains are unparalleled in the animal kingdom in terms of how much sophisticated material is packed into their tiny nervous systems. He looks at their innate behaviors and the ways their evolution as foragers may have contributed to their keen spatial memory. Chittka also examines the psychological differences between bees and the ethical dilemmas that arise in conservation and laboratory settings because bees feel and think. Throughout, he touches on the fascinating history behind the study of bee behavior. Exploring an insect whose sensory experiences rival those of humans, The Mind of a Bee reveals the singular abilities of some of the world’s most incredible creatures.

Book Apitherapy

Download or read book Apitherapy written by Kemal Çelik and published by Tudás Alapítvány. This book was released on 2020-05-31 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apitherapy or “Bee therapy” (from the Latin apis which means bee) is the medicinal use of products made by honeybees. Products of the Honeybee include honey, pollen, beeswax, propolis, royal jelly and bee venom. Some of the conditions treated are: multiple sclerosis, arthritis, wounds, pain, gout, shingles, burns, tendonitis and infections. Great philosophers and physicians, such as Aristotle and Hippocrates were fascinated by the industrious bees. They captured them in hives, studying their complex communities and harvesting the honey for their own consumption. One long-standing use of honey (rec ordedfrom as early as 2500 BC and still used today) is in the treatment of wounds and burns to the skin. The ancient Egyptians used honey in very many different medicines, but one particular document gives instruction for placing honey directly onto the affected part of the body and wrapping it round with cloth as a dressing. This was used for open wounds, cut, burns or ulcers and this would help the would to dry out and heal satisfactorily as the honey would form a barrier to prevent further infection. The wound would also heal with the minimum of scarring. A number of properties inherent to honey might contribute to its ability to fight infection and promote healing. Its high sugar content allows it to draw infection and fluid from wounds by a process called ‘osmosis’ Honey prevents bacterial growth through its acidic pH and through the work of an enzyme that produces small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Its ability to keep the area around a wound moist and protected promotes fast healing and prevents scarring. Honey also contains components from the specific plants used by the bees in their production, and it is speculated that some of these components might further add to the antibacterial and wound-healing effects of honey. The process of pasteurization, used to sterilize commercial honeys, destroys the enzyme involved in the production of hydrogen peroxide, rendering these honeys less antibacterial, and deficient of any medicinal benefit.

Download or read book Bee Time written by Mark L. Winston and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-10-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being among bees is a full-body experience, Mark Winston writes—from the low hum of tens of thousands of insects and the pungent smell of honey and beeswax, to the sight of workers flying back and forth between flowers and the hive. The experience of an apiary slows our sense of time, heightens our awareness, and inspires awe. Bee Time presents Winston’s reflections on three decades spent studying these creatures, and on the lessons they can teach about how humans might better interact with one another and the natural world. Like us, honeybees represent a pinnacle of animal sociality. How they submerge individual needs into the colony collective provides a lens through which to ponder human societies. Winston explains how bees process information, structure work, and communicate, and examines how corporate boardrooms are using bee societies as a model to improve collaboration. He investigates how bees have altered our understanding of agricultural ecosystems and how urban planners are looking to bees in designing more nature-friendly cities. The relationship between bees and people has not always been benign. Bee populations are diminishing due to human impact, and we cannot afford to ignore what the demise of bees tells us about our own tenuous affiliation with nature. Toxic interactions between pesticides and bee diseases have been particularly harmful, foreshadowing similar effects of pesticides on human health. There is much to learn from bees in how they respond to these challenges. In sustaining their societies, bees teach us ways to sustain our own.
