Download or read book An Introduction to American Literature Classic Reprint written by Henry Spackman Pancoast and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-04 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to American Literature The plan and purpose of this book can be stated in a few words. It is intended as a companion-book to my Introduction to English Literature, and it has been prepared - so far as the nature of the subject permitted - according to the same general scheme. The first thing required of a book of this character is that it shall really bring the reader into vital rela tion with the best works in the literature of which it treats, - that it shall induce him to read or re-read them with both delight and understanding. I have tried to do this by treating our greater authors at comparative length; by making their personality as real and living as I could; by adding some critical discussion of. Their chief works; and by furnishing study lists containing suggestions for reading and bibliographical references. Download or read book A History of American Literature Classic Reprint written by Percy H. Boynton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of American Literature The general purpose in the preparation of this book has, been to eliminate negligible detail and to subordinate or omit authors of minor importance in order to stress the men and the movements that are most significant in American intel lectual history/ The book has therefore been written with a view to showing the drift of American thought as illustrated by major writers or groups and as revealed by a careful study of one or two cardinal works by each. In this sequence of thought the growth of American self-consciousness and the changing ideals of American patriotism have been kept in mind throughout. The attempt is made to induce study of representative classics and extensive reading of the American literature which illuminates the past of the country chiefly, of course, in reminiscent fiction, drama, and poetry. Download or read book A Short History of American Literature Classic Reprint written by Walter Cochrane Bronson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of American Literature Throughout the book the literature has been pre sented in its relation to general conditions in America and to the literatures of England and the Continent of Europe, for only so can it be completely understood and its full significance perceived 3 but the personality of the authors and the intrinsic qualities of their work have, it is hoped, received due attention. The division into periods is not meant to be insisted upon too strongly. But some dividing lines must be run for convenience and clearness in treating of so wide and diversified a field, and those adopted are perhaps liable to fewer objections than any others. They have, however, been transgressed freely where it was necessary to do so in order to avoid splitting the discussion of an author's work. In the case of writers with whom the reader is probably not familiar and never need be, the method is chie y descriptive 3 elsewhere the book is intended to be merely a guide in reading and studying the literature itself. Book A Brief History of American Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Brief History of American Literature Classic Reprint written by William P. Trent and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief History of American Literature In this book, which is designed for the use of schools, I - have endeavoured to furnish a condensed account of the development of American literature, rather than a series of connected essays on leading American authors. At the same time I have tried to mention no writer or book devoid of a fair amount of significance, and I have also had it in mind to treat the more important authors on a scale sufficiently extended to suit the needs of the average class. I have aimed to minimize tentative criticism and to give only such details of historical setting as could not well be spared. I have condensed the bibliographical information to dimensions more or less proportionate with the resources of school libraries and have divided it into sections according to chapters. The period from 1866 to the present day has been sketched in a chapter, fuller treatment of writers, many of whom are still living, not seeming advisable in view of the difficulty of maintaining an impartial attitude toward contemporaries. An appendix gives important dates, which may be used in lieu of those scattered through the text. Topics for essays and class reports will be often suggested by the paragraph headings, and teachers may sometimes find it advantageous, when time permits, to have reports made on writers and books mentioned in the Appendix but not in the text, as well as on topics treated more fully in my larger book, "A History of American Literature, 1607-1865" (1903, Appleton). Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in English and American Literature The questions and remarks are placed at the end of each Part, instead of being put at the end of each chapter, or at the close of the section to which they refer. It is hoped that these questions will aid materially in analyzing the thought, and that they will prove a decided help both in learning and in teaching the lessons. In the historical portion, the effort has been to represent every period by the best it produced. For this purpose it has not been thought necessary to call attention to. A great number of writers, but only to such as gave tone and char acter to the literature of their time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of American Literature The following chapters describe the greatest achieve ments in American literature from the earliest times until the present. Many pupils fail to obtain a clear idea of great American authors and literary movements because textbook writers and teachers ignore the element of truth in the old adage, The half is greater than the whole, and dwell too much on minor authors and details, which could reasonably be expected to interest only a specialist. In the following pages especial attention has been paid, not only to the individual work of great authors, but also to literary movements, ideals, and animating principles, and to the relation of all these to English literature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of American Literature The aim of the book is to be simple, orderly, and clear; to tell a few facts in such a way that there need be no confusion in the mind of the reader. While it is hoped that the subject-matter of the book has intrinsic value, a knowledge of literature obviously comes only from study of the literature itself; therefore, primarily the book will have its greatest usefulness when taken as a guide. With this thought in view, suggestions for reading, intended mainly for students in secondary schools, are given at the ends of the chapters. More mature minds will naturally read the books mentioned in the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Rice and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-09 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to American Literature, or the Origin and Development of the English Language, With Gems of Poetry The statement has been made thus explicit, inasmuch as it is believed the design of this work is original; and it would be a poor reward for the labor that has been expended upon this small volume, should it be considered in any other light than as an original production, whatever its style of execution may be. And it may not be altogether impertinent to state, that the maxim - it is unwise to publish, because it reveals the extent of one's knowledge, - does not rigidly refer to this, as but a small part of the matter is published which was prepared in the investigation of the subject, and it had been easier to have made a folio out of it than this small volume. The work was commenced at an early day, and continued till it became a passion; therefore distrusting its merit, it has been submit ted to the examination of men, whose names it would be need less to mention, who have commended it and advised its pub lication. A part of the manuscript, that particularly which treats of the origin and philosophy of the language, has been submitted to the examination of Mr. J. H. Perkins who has pointed out whatever he thought worthy of alteration in its matter and style. It would be the dictate of a wise discretion to await the de cision of the public before making any disclosures with regard to any circumstances connected with the work, and the time that has been employed in its composition; but no desire is felt to escape the responsibility of the undertaking, and it is dcliv ered into the hands of an impartial community with the fullest confidence that it will be regarded with all the liberality that it deserves. Download or read book A Study of American Literature Classic Reprint written by William Cranston Lawton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of American Literature In this volume the attempt has been made to distinguish the salient epochs in our literature, brief though the story is. The relation of the artist and his work to the general life of his time and of his people has been frequently recalled. This relation is especially illustrated in the chronological tables, which may be supplemented from the regular textbooks in American history. Nevertheless, the treatment in our text itself is in the main biographical. That is, the effort has almost always been to make the single life appear an articulated and rational whole. This method craves far more space than was here available; but, as Miss Scudder remarks of her similar undertaking for English literature, any such volume as ours must serve merely as an introduction to far wider reading. The writer believes that biographical treatment is the most intelligible to the young reader. It also seems to him the most truthful. That the artist, more than other men, can escape largely from local or temporal limitations, and find his spiritual kin, seems undeniable; yet from his truest self he cannot escape. Even when the artistic activity seems most detached from the man, as in Hawthorne, or even in Poe, the work will be better understood by a sympathetic study of the life, the whole life. Book A Manual of American Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of American Literature Classic Reprint written by James B. Smiley and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of American Literature In the preparation of this manual the author's aim has been simply to open the way to a study of the masterpieces of American literature. No mere description or synopsis of a work of literature can truly portray the original. The reader must go to the book itself, must grasp the spirit of the writer, and must feel for himself the beauty of the poem, the charm of the essay, the force of the novel. The treatment is biographical rather than critical, as the author's intention has been to interest beginners in the lives of the great writers, and thus stimulate them to a freer and less mechanical study of their works. More space has been devoted to Cotton Mather, Jonathan Edwards, and Benjamin Franklin than might at first seem to be justified from a purely literary standpoint, but stress has been laid upon them because the lives of Mather and Edwards reveal so well certain traits typical of early New England, while Franklin's writings so eminently express the spirit of his age.
