Book The Religions of India Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Religions of India Classic Reprint written by Auguste Barth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A. Barth's The Religions of India is a survey of the popular religions of India. Originally written for inclusion in an encyclopedia, Barth later expanded the work to a standalone text, which is more suitable for a document of such depth. The author begins with an examination of the Vedic religions, commonly thought of as the precursor religions to Hinduism. Barth traces the spread of these religions through time and the evolution of ancient religions into more modern religions, proceeding to explore Brahmanism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism in great depth, highlighting the history and practices of each. Barth writes in a distinguished, authoritative tone. It is apparent that the origin of this writing was inclusion in an encyclopedia, as the text is heavy with facts and raw information. While there is some degree of exposition and argumentative analysis, the focus here is clearly on presenting the information. The Religions of India would make a great textbook. It is clear, concise, and contains a wealth of information. Amateur historians and readers of religious history will likely find this to be an interesting read, and it makes a valuable addition to the library of anybody interested in India's religions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Quest of India The writers of this series of volumes on the variant forms of religious life in India are governed in their work by two impelling motives. I. They endeavour to work in the sincere and sympathetic spirit of science. They desire to understand the perplexingly involved developments of thought and life in India and dis passionately to estimate their value. They recognize the futility of any such attempt to understand and evaluate, unless it is grounded in a thorough historical study of the phenomena investigated. In recognizing this fact they do no more than share what is common ground among all' modern students of religion of any repute. But they also believe that it is neces sary to set the practical side of each system in living relation to the beliefs and the literature, and that, in this regard, the close and direct contact which they have each had with Indian religious life ought to prove a source of valuable light. For, until a clear understanding has been gained of the practical influence exerted by the habits of worship, by the practice of the ascetic, devotional, or occult discipline, by the social organization and by the family system, the real impact of the faith upon the life of the individual and the community cannot be estimated and, without the advantage of extended personal intercourse, a trustworthy account of the religious experience of a community can scarcely be achieved by even the most careful student. But, while doing so and seeking to bring to the interpretation of the systems under review such imagination and sympathy as characterize the best study in the domain of religion to-day, they believe they are able to shed on their work fresh light drawn from the close religious intercourse which they have each had with the people who live by the faiths herein described and their study of the relevant literature has in every instance been largely supplemented by persistent question ing of those likely to be able to give information. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Religious Thought in Modern India Only twice in all the gospels are we told that the Son of Man was taken by surprise. And the two things that astonished Him were the faith of a heathen, and the want of faith of His own people in His own home. It was a' man of alien race and civilisation who opened up to the thought of the chosen people of God the riches of a faith which they had supposed peculiarly their own. We shall do well to remember this, for we live in an age When those whom we are accustomed to call heathen are often secret disciples of the Lord J esus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trident, the Crescent, and the Cross: A View of the Religious History of India During the Hindu, Buddhist, Mohammedan, and Christian Periods This day two years ago did I, after an absence of nine teen years, once more behold the White cliffs and green fields of Old England. That period of banishment was a season of mingled sorrow and joy, but of more joy than sorrow. After so many years of missionary toil I brought back with me two decided convictions; these were, that, of all lives the Missionary's life is the most happy, and of all work Mission work is the most im portant; and I came home resolved, if God should en able me, to illustrate these convictions in a treatise which, by His blessing, might help to convey them to other minds. The brightness of returning joy was followed by a dark night of unlooked - for trial. This necessarily delayed the execution of my plan; but it seemed no sufficient ground for relinquishing it. It is now completed; and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Christianity in India

Download or read book Christianity in India written by John William Kaye and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in India: An Historical Narrative It will be observed that the subject has been treated biographically in the earlier part of the work. I believe that this mode of treatment, whilst impart ing a living interest to the narrative better calculated than anything else to enchain the attention of the reader, is at the same time the most truthful form in which the progress of Christianity in India can be represented. It is to the advance of individual minds - to the energy of individual efforts - that we owe the much or the little that has been done; and it is in the thoughts that were taking shape in the minds Of these pioneers Of the Gospel that we must trace the dawning of Christianity in the East. The first difficulties fairly overcome-the thicket cleared. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2019-02-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Religion and Philosophy of the Hindus IN the early progress of researches into Indian literature, it was doubted whether the Ve'das were extant; or, if portions of them were still preserved, whether any person, however learned in other respects, might be capable of understanding their obsolete dialect. It was believed too, that, if a Bra/maria really possessed the Indian scrip tures, his religious prejudices would nevertheless prevent his imparting the holy knowledge to any but a regenerate Hindu. These notions, supported by popular tales, were cherished long after the Vedas had been communicated to da'ra' snvcou, and parts of them translated into the Persian language by him, or for his use.* The doubts were not finally abandoned, until Colonel polier obtained from Jeyepiir a transcript of what purported to be a complete copy of the Vedas, and which he deposited in the British Museum. About the same time Sir robert chambers collected at Benares numerous fragments of the Indian scripture: General swarms, at, a later period obtained copies of some parts of it; and Sir william jones was successful in procuring valuable portions of the Vedas, and in translating several curious passages from one of them. I have been still more fortunate in collecting at Benares the text and com mentary of a large portion of these celebrated books; and, without waiting to examine them more completely than has been yet practi cable, I shall here attempt to give a brief explanation of what they chiefly contain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religions of India: Brahmanism and Buddhism I'he study of religions outside of Christianity has now overcome many of the prejudices which hindered its earlier growth. It has no longer to contend with the suspicion that the effort to understand other religions will make us attach less value to our own. On the contrary, the tendency of the study of religions is seen more and more to strengthen the hold of Christianity upon us. The student of this science is led to see very clearly how all men need religion and have provided themselves in one way or another with access to'the powers above them. But it happens very rarely that even the most sympathetic study of a foreign religion leads anyone to prefer it to his own. In contemplating other faiths, we do, it is true, become aware that some features of Christianity are stronger than others and do more to qualify it to spread over the world. We have to distinguish between the essence of Christianity, in which lies the secret of its power, and its accidental features. That surely must confirm and not weaken the tie that binds us to Christ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
