Book An Integrated Geothermal Exploration Program for Northern California Southern Oregon

Download or read book An Integrated Geothermal Exploration Program for Northern California Southern Oregon written by Eureka Resource Associates and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broad zone characterized by recent volcanism and active hot springs extends northwards from the latitude of Lassen Peak in northern California through Oregon and Washington. These indications of abnormally high crustal temperature have stimulated commercial efforts to explore the geothermal energy potential of the region. These efforts to date have met with only limited success due to the geologic complexity of the area, rough terrain, and high rainfall which make exploration difficult and expensive. As part of an on-going program to examine the geothermal potential of the Cascades region, Eureka has recently completed a study of an area centered on the High Cascades in central Oregon (described in proposal P-8100). As a follow on to that project, we propose to conduct a second comprehensive study of the geothermal potential of an area located in northern California and southern Oregon (Figures 1 and 2). Using both published and proprietary geological and geophysical data, as well as skills developed in searching for geothermal targets in complex volcanic areas, experienced interpreters will produce tectonic and composite prospect maps of a region covering 25,900 sq.km. (approximately 10,000 sq.mi.) The project area encompasses three major geothermal resource areas (KGRA's): Klamath Falls, Klamath Falls Hills, Glass Mountain as well as Mt. Shasta, a young volcanic system believed to be underlain by a magma chamber within 10 km of the surface. (Smith & Shaw, 1978). The use of a digitally enhanced Landsat image, custom flown aeromagnetic data, gravity data and Curie point isotherm determinations, in combination with published geological and geophysical data, is a cost effective approach for evaluating and rating geothermal prospects. The resultant Geothermal Prospect Evaluation Table will help participants to decide the best locations for exploration and land acquisition. The results of this project will also help participants to select additional BLM acreage since, if the H.R.740 Amendment to the Geothermal Steam Act passes, the total allowable company land limit will be increased to 51,200 acres from the present 20,000 acres.

Book Geothermal Exploration by Telluric Currents in the Klamath Falls Area Oregon

Download or read book Geothermal Exploration by Telluric Currents in the Klamath Falls Area Oregon written by Rex Wai-Yuen Tang and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geothermal resources are characterized by a very low electrical resistivity of the reservoir formations. The application of electrical methods in the reconnaissance type exploration for such resources is discussed. It is concluded that the magneto-telluric method is very well suited for this purpose. In 1971 and 1972 a reconnaissance type magneto-telluric field program was carried out in southern and eastern Oregon by the Geophysics Group at Oregon State University. In order to reduce the field effort, the magnetic data were obtained from a fixed base station at Corvallis. Only the electrical field components were measured at the various field stations. Ten stations were occupied in the Klamath Falls area, six in central and eastern Oregon and one in the Willamette Valley. Impedance data were obtained in the .025 to 0.05 Hz frequency band of the Pc 3 micropulsations. The data were analysed on the basis of an individual event method. Only magnetic-telluric events with a good correlation are taken into account. The resulting apparent resistivities display some correlation with known geothermal manifestations in the region. The lowest resistivities of the order of 10 ohm-meters were recorded in the Klamath Falls region and at a station near Vale in eastern Oregon. As common in magneto-telluric work, the data display a considerable variability, irregular scattering and anisotropy. The results are encouraging in that they appear to indicate that the magneto-telluric method is a useful reconnaissance method in the regional exploration for geothermal resources.
