Download or read book Community Self Determination written by John J. Laukaitis and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-09-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After World War II, American Indians began relocating to urban areas in large numbers, in search of employment. Partly influenced by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, this migration from rural reservations to metropolitan centers presented both challenges and opportunities. This history examines the educational programs American Indians developed in Chicago and gives particular attention to how the American Indian community chose its own distinct path within and outside of the larger American Indian self-determination movement. In what John J. Laukaitis terms community self-determination, American Indians in Chicago demonstrated considerable agency as they developed their own programs and worked within already existent institutions. The community-based initiatives included youth programs at the American Indian Center and St. Augustine's Center for American Indians, the Native American Committee's Adult Learning Center, Little Big Horn High School, O-Wai-Ya-Wa Elementary School, Native American Educational Services College, and the Institute for Native American Development at Truman College. Community Self-Determination presents the first major examination of these initiatives and programs and provides an understanding of how education functioned as a form of activism for Chicago's American Indian community.

Download or read book Trinity University written by R. Douglas Brackenridge and published by Trinity University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its founding in 1869 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Trinity University has been engaged in realizing the dreams of its founders to become “a University of the highest order.” In Trinity University: A Tale of Three Cities, R. Douglas Brackenridge, professor emeritus of religion at Trinity, brings a wealth of scholarship and knowledge to this institutional history. Brackenridge traces Trinity’s unique heritage from its founding in Tehuacana and growth in Waxahachie to its emergence in San Antonio as a top private university for the study of liberal arts and sciences. He draws on historical records and reports, oral histories, newspaper accounts, books, correspondence, and archives to document the university’s challenges and successes. He describes Trinity’s development within the broader context of private, church-related universities in America, while profiling the administrators, faculty, staff, and students who have contributed to Trinity’s rich heritage. The result is a well-researched story of the founding and the progression of one of the nation’s exceptional institutions for higher learning. Illustrations picture Trinity’s campuses in three cities and include black and white photographs.
Download or read book What Is to Be Done About Violence Against Women written by Kate Fitz-Gibbon and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book maps the problems and possibilities of the policies and practices designed to tackle violence against women in the domestic sphere over the last 40 years. In 2018, the United Nations declared the home the most dangerous place for women around the word, and in early April 2020, the United Nations Population Fund predicted that for every three months that government-enforced lockdowns in response to coronavirus an additional 15 million cases of domestic violence would occur worldwide. This book asks the simple yet critical question: how can governments best ensure women’s safety in the twenty-first century? Taking its title from Elizabeth Wilson’s 1983 book and her three-level approach of considering the role of social policy, the law and ideology, Fitz-Gibbon and Walklate draw on their expertise of femicide, domestic abuse and family violence to examine the salience of global and local policy and practice responses to such violence(s), and to ask timely questions about the ongoing value of the recourse to the criminal law for twenty-first century policy. Comparative in orientation, appreciative of the importance of geographical and social context, and committed to understanding the historical processes that continue to frame policy responses, this book takes a long hard look at what has and has not been achieved in relation to domestic abuse and family violence and seeks to challenge all that has come to be taken for granted in responding to such violence(s). Published in the 40th Anniversary of Elizabeth Wilson’s ground-breaking contribution, this book is destined to become a classic in its own right. It is essential reading for all those engaged in feminist criminology, gender and crime, family and domestic violence, and violence against women.
