Book excerpt: No previous generation has ever travelled so energetically or so obsessively as ours, nor has travel writing ever been so much in fashion as it is now. But behind the self-conscious literary artistry of today's narratives there lies a rich and fascinating history of travel writing, stretching back over several thousand years.Travel writing has emerged from migration, war, exploration, trade, conquest, pilgrimage, science, and poetic longing. But when they recorded their travels, the military commanders of Greece and Rome, the navigators of the Age of Discovery, the diplomats and missionaries of the seventeenth century, the dilettantes who set out on the Grand Tour, the romantic travellers and the scientists of the nineteenth century all had one thing in common: they were re-imagining the world, re-interpreting it in their own minds and for their readers. This is the first general survey of the entire history of travel literature, with illustrations reproduced from manuscripts and books in the Bodleian Library's collections. Writers covered include Marco Polo, Sir John Mandeville, Thomas Coryate, Captain Cook, T.E. Lawrence, and Christopher Columbus as well as Boswell and Johnson, Byron, Ruskin, Defoe, Conrad, and James. This book highlights over a hundred texts, showing how one motive for travelling has been succeeded by another, and how travel writing has often inhabited a strange borderland between truth and imagination, fact and fiction. It demonstrates how travel writers have slowly outgrown their traditional stance of superiority to all things 'foreign', and have moved towards a deeper sensitivity to other lands and other cultures.
Download or read book Soulshaping written by Jeff Brown and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An engaging, inspirational memoir that takes readers on a soul-searching journey toward heart-consciousness and spiritual authenticity Ever since childhood, Jeff Brown did all the things he was supposed to do to become successful in the eyes of the world. He was on the Dean’s Honor List as an undergraduate. He won the Law and Medicine prize in law school and apprenticed with a top criminal lawyer. It had been Brown’s lifelong dream to practice criminal law and search for the truth in the courtroom. But then, on the verge of opening a law practice, he heard a little voice inside telling him to stop, just stop. With great difficulty, he honored this voice and began a heartfelt quest for the truth that lived within him. Although he didn’t realize it at the time, Brown was actually questing for his innate image, the essential being that he came into this lifetime to embody. He was searching for his authentic face. By going inside and connecting his spirituality with his emotional life, he learned essential lessons. By learning to surrender to the "School of Heart Knocks"—the school of life—the found his authentic face and embraced the call to write. Soulshaping is an inspiring memoir for anyone who has heard a whisper of something truer calling out to them amid the distractions of modern life. Jeff’s dramatic and often funny story takes readers through remarkably human experiences—emotional, physical, and economic—as he vividly recounts his journey to discover his soul’s purpose. A work of courageous self-creation, Soulshaping reminds us that we are all truly connected, that our seemingly isolated struggles are actually part of the shared human challenge to live a life that is heart-centered and soul-driven.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep Travel has led writers from the Himalayan peaks of Nepal to the Saharan sands of Morocco, from the jungles of Mexico to the gitano caves in Spain. Just as compelling as those exterior landscapes we travel are the interior landscapes we encounter-the terrain of own thoughts and emotions. The writers in this anthology address both inner and outer adventures through stories, poems, and vignettes that are as informative as a travelogue yet as revelatory as a journal. During our trips, we collect many things-cactus silk scarves, handfuls of tin milagros-but the best souvenirs lie within this book: the observations, insights, and reflections that form the heart of Deep Travel.

Download or read book A Sense of Direction written by Gideon Lewis-Kraus and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In medieval times, a pilgrimage gave the average Joe his only break from the daily grind. For Gideon Lewis-Kraus, it promises a different kind of escape. Determined to avoid the fear and self-sacrifice that kept his father, a gay rabbi, closeted until midlife, he has moved to anything-goes Berlin. But the surfeit of freedom there has begun to paralyze him, and when a friend extends a drunken invitation to join him on an ancient pilgrimage route across Spain, Lewis-Kraus packs his bag, grateful for the chance to wake each morning with a sense of direction. Irreverent, moving, hilarious, and thought-provoking, A Sense of Direction is Lewis-Kraus’s dazzling riff on the perpetual war between discipline and desire, and its attendant casualties. Across three pilgrimages and many hundreds of miles, he completes an idiosyncratic odyssey to the heart of a family mystery and a human dilemma: How do we come to terms with what has been and what is—and find a way forward, with purpose?

Download or read book A Silent Journey written by Raghunandan and published by Readworthy. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The spirit of inquiry knocks at the door of our consciousness many times. But we conveniently brush it aside. And when we do nurture it, only a few of us are fortunate enough to come across a person who can clarify our doubts or quench our spiritual thirst. However, if a book is made available, which narrates some of the difficulties the seeker faces during his/her search of oneself, it might be of great help. And this book is an attempt in this direction. Explaining how aspiration (subheccha) for a life gets germinated and what should be the attitude of the seeker of Truth, it discusses at length the different methods of mind control, the intricacies of Asanas, Pranayama, Dharana, Dhyana and Bhakti. The experiences and discoveries of the seeker have also been incorporated."
Download or read book Hajj Travelogues written by Richard van Leeuwen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2024-06-06 with total page 1078 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hajj Travelogues: Texts and Contexts from the 12th Century until 1950 Richard van Leeuwen maps the corpus of hajj accounts from the Muslim world and Europe. The work outlines the main issues in a field of study which has largely been neglected. A large number of hajj travelogues are described as a textual type integrating religious discourse into the form of the journey. Special attention is given to their intertextual embedding in the broader discursive tradition of the hajj. Since the corpus is seen as dynamic and responsive to historical developments, the texts are situated in their historical context and the subsequent phases of globalisation. It is shown how in travelogues forms of religious subjectivity are constructed and expressed.
Download or read book Superman Canyon Road written by Stuart Leslie Munro and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-04-24 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superman Canyon Road is both travelogue, and personal journal. There are chapters on Sweden, Afghanistan, India, Alaska and the Yukon, and the 4 corners of the US - Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. I’ve included some recent travelogue that was written en route, and e-mailed from America’s Southwest, Scotland, and lastly from Spain. Stylistically, the recent material differs radically from the rest. My pace accelerates in reluctant homage to the inherent immediacy of electronic media. These stories describe dozens of random dramatic encounters on the journeys I made between ‘89 and 2000. Most of the essays are intended as geopolitical snap shots, to be read and considered within the historical context of the ‘90s. There are two exceptions. The stories about India and Afghanistan refer to my wanderings throughout 1974. There’s occasional wit (modesty demands understatement in that regard), too much honesty, plenty of honest irony, world commentary, and serious social statement about these times. I’ve noticed that people around my age empathize most easily with the tone of the narrative. In Superman Canyon Road my aim is to entertain and to inform. I’m speaking only for myself as a middle class Scotsman, one who became so delightfully lost in the primordial desert zone of western America that I’ve willingly forfeited any desire to ever be anything, anyone, or anywhere else. And of course, the names of all incidental characters have been changed in order to cause the genuinely guilty ones zero embarrassment. Writing this book saved me from dealing directly with most of what went on during the ‘90s. Now I’m 48. I still don’t own a kilt. And honestly, I’m browsing as fast as I can. As we now know, the nineties ended up looking like happy hour at a computer-geek pre-apocalypse rehearsal. We are living in an era of sociological anomalies. We have sensitive new age soldiers, and a generation of youth whose attention span sometimes stretches to 1/16 of a second. I simply took the nineties off. I traveled, wrote, played music, and became adept at having fun. Almost everything I found out went straight into this book. Because this book covers ten years, the entries do not appear in chronological order. The first half of Superman Canyon Road was completed during the early ‘90s. Those were serious times. Somewhere in the middle of the ‘90s, I lightened up to an alarming degree. After a five year break from writing, I produced the last half while in a state of near hysteria.

Download or read book Pilgrim Road Revised Edition written by Albert Holtz and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the view of St. Benedict of Nursia, the Lenten journey is an inner pilgrimage with Christ into the deepest parts of ourselves, to be marked not so much by external observances, such as fasting and self-denial, as by a deepening of our relationship with God. Benedictine monk Albert Holtz develops that journey theme through meditations written during a fifteen-country pilgrimage while on sabbatical. At the heart of each reflection is the lesson it teaches about our inner spiritual journey. By applying Benedict’s monastic wisdom to the everyday concerns and aspirations of modern Christians, Pilgrim Road helps contemporary spiritual seekers travel along and experience the journey of Lent in the most positive, meaningful, and fruitful manner.
Download or read book Routledge Encyclopedia of Narrative Theory written by David Herman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-06-10 with total page 1327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past several decades have seen an explosion of interest in narrative, with this multifaceted object of inquiry becoming a central concern in a wide range of disciplinary fields and research contexts. As accounts of what happened to particular people in particular circumstances and with specific consequences, stories have come to be viewed as a basic human strategy for coming to terms with time, process, and change. However, the very predominance of narrative as a focus of interest across multiple disciplines makes it imperative for scholars, teachers, and students to have access to a comprehensive reference resource.
