Book excerpt: An Inland Voyage is a travelogue about a canoeing trip through France and Belgium in 1876. It is Stevenson's earliest book and of the earliest works of outdoor literature. The voyage was started with Stevenson's Scottish friend Sir Walter Grindlay Simpson, mainly along the Oise River from Belgium through France, in the Fall of 1876. Stevenson was named Arethusa in the book, and Simpson was called Cigarette. They both had a wooden canoe comparable in style to a modern kayak. They were narrow, decked, and paddled with double-bladed paddles, a technique that had recently become famous in England, France, and neighboring countries. Outdoor travel for leisure was uncommon during that time because of which the two Scotsmen were often mistaken for traveling salesmen, but the uniqueness of their canoes would bring entire villages out and wave at them. Much of the travelogue describes the two men's adventures during the trip. Stevenson also depicts many intriguing people he and Simpson met. These included the Royal Sport Nautique members and a family that lived on a barge.

Book An Inland Voyage

    Book Details:

  • Release : 1955
  • ISBN : 3849676323
  • Pages : 84 pages

Download or read book An Inland Voyage written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 1955 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Inland Voyage" was as uneventful and prosaic a journey as could be made by a canoeist along the course of a sluggish canal and an insignificant river, yet the historian has invested every incident in his record with the deepest interest. It is a rare illustration of the fact that the traveller sees what he carries, with him the faculty for seeing. Mr. Stevenson has the penetrating and subtle insight of the philosopher, which discovers subjects for edifying reflection in the lightest affairs coming under his notice. With this keen and thoughtful power of observation, he has a talent for expression no less original and striking. Such as these are the pearls he lets fall, with careless prodigality, in the progress of a wholly unpretending narrative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical interest in Robert Louis Stevenson has never been greater. New editions of the author's works--from the poems to the travel writing, from the Scottish novels to the South Seas tales--are appearing. During the year 2000, the sesquicentennial of RLS's birth, three conferences were held in honor of the occasion and each entertained an international audience. This collection of essays reflects the scope of Robert Louis Stevenson's achievement and the range of current critical response. The first section contains four critical overviews that include an analysis of the Stevensonian imagination, an assessment of the author's literary theory, an examination of the coded significance of burial and reanimation in Stevenson's Wrong Box and other works, and an examination of the use of both Scottish and South Seas islands in his fiction. The second section contains three essays that examine the many-faceted Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Other works--An Inland Voyage, A Child's Garden of Verses, The Dynamiter, The Master of Ballantrae, and Prayers Written at Vailima--are the subjects of the six essays in the third section. Three essays on biography, popular culture, and personal response are in the fourth section.
