Book Improper Pursuits

Download or read book Improper Pursuits written by Carola Hicks and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With these words to Boswell, Samuel Johnson dismissed Lady Di Beauclerk, the wife of one of his closest friends, a woman of the highest rank, the daughter of a duke, who had forsaken her reputation, her place in society, her children, and her role as lady-in-waiting to the Queen for love. Born Lady Diana Spencer in 1735, the eldest child of the third Duke of Marlborough, she was expected rigidly to follow a traditional path through life: educated in the fashion considered suitable for a girl, and married to a man of the appropriate rank for a duke's daughter. But finding herself in a desperately unhappy marriage to Viscount Bolingbroke, Lady Di overturned convention. She left her husband, maintained a secret relationship with her lover, Topham Beauclerk, hid the birth of an illegitimate child, and eventually helped to support herself by painting. Lady Di Beauclerk was a highly gifted artist who was able to use her scandalous reputation as an adulteress, aristocratic woman to further her career as a painter and designer. She painted portraits, illustrated plays and books, provided designs for Wedgwood's innovative pottery, and decorated rooms with murals. Championed by her close friend Horace Walpole, whose letters illuminate all aspects of her life, she was able to establish herself as an admired artist at a time when women struggled to forge careers. Carola Hicks provides an enthralling account of eighteenth-century society, in which Lady Di encountered many of the most eminent artistic, literary, and political figures of the day. Improper Pursuits is an absorbing study of a singular life.

Book The Proper Pursuit of Prosperity

Download or read book The Proper Pursuit of Prosperity written by William E. Cripe and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our God is a generous God. However, His kindness, generosity, and blessing do not exclude us from hard times, struggles, or injustices in this life. For many, faith is the coin you put into a 'vending machine God,' obligating Him to dispense your selection. The hard truth is that the tendency toward suffering in this life is more normal for the Christian than the promise of perfect health and extraordinary wealth. There is aProper Pursuit of Prosperity, but it bears little resemblance to the so-called 'good news' being hawked by many of today's 'purveyors of prosperity.' In William Cripe Sr.'s inspirational and informative book, you will discover what the prosperity gospel is, what is wrong with it, and what is right with it. You will also find the answer to the question: Is there a legitimate expectation of prosperity this side of heaven? There is a day of perfect prosperity promised to all who believe, but that day is not in this lifetime. We exist not for the pursuit of our own gratification but to do God's bidding—not the other way around. Dive intoThe Proper Pursuit of Prosperityand discover Cripe's message of how God does not exist for us—we exist for Him. 'Cripe's work is a needed corrective to much of the prosperity preaching and teaching of our day. He combines an emphasis on biblical theology with global realities and personal experience that makes for an extremely effective argument. The goal of seeking and applying balanced truth is instructive for us all.' Dr. Martin Crain, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Director, Professional Doctoral Programs, Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Police pursuits, often receiving a lot of media attention, have become a topic of concern and priority for both law enforcement and the communities they serve. They often come with high risks for the well-being of community members and for both the police officers involved in the chase as well as for the fleeing suspects. In this brief, we summarize what is known about police pursuits, from both legal decisions and criminological research. We then discuss the impact of this research on police pursuit policy, court decisions, and media reports. We offer suggestions about the need for more development and use of research, and the challenges for research to be integrated into police policies, training, supervision and accountability systems.

Book The Pursuit of the Heiress

Download or read book The Pursuit of the Heiress written by A. P. W. Malcomson and published by Ulster Historical Foundation. This book was released on 2006 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Pursuit of the Heiress" is a new, greatly enlarged and more widely focused version of what the late Lawrence Stone described as "a brilliant long essay or short book on the subject of the role of heiresses among the Irish aristocracy," which was published by the Ulster Historical Foundation under the same title in 1982 and has long been out of print. The new book comes to the same broad conclusions about heiresses--namely that their importance as a means of enlarging the estates or retrieving the fortunes of their husbands has been much exaggerated. This was because known heiresses were well protected by a variety of legal devices and, in common with many aristocratic women of the day, also had minds and strong preferences of their own--which meant that they were not generally an object of deliberate or profitable pursuit. The new book also ranges more widely than its central theme of heiresses and addresses other aspects of aristocratic marriage such as abductions, elopements, mesalliances, the supposed "rise of the affective family," and the disadvantaged situation of even the richest and most privileged women in an age when both adultery and divorce were largely the prerogative of men.

This is illustrated by case material from two attempts at the analysis of patients with latent psychosis. Discussions of countertransference and humiliation have also been added.

Book German Romance VII Ulrich Fuetrer Iban

Download or read book German Romance VII Ulrich Fuetrer Iban written by Ulrich Fuetrer and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2003 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First ever English translation, with facing edition, of an important medieval German Arthurian romance.Composed in the 1480s by the Munich painter and writer Ulrich Fuetrer, Iban is the story of a young knight at King Arthur's court, who pursues adventure abroad, wins a land and its lady as his wife, loses both through his immaturity and negligence, and eventually regains his country and his spouse in a series of adventures that teach him to place the welfare of others above his own desires. A retelling of Hartmann von Aue's Middle High German classic Iwein from circa 1200, itself an adaptation of the Old French writer Chrétien de Troyes' earlier Yvain, the Knight with the Lion, Fuetrer's Iban is one of fifteen narratives making up his massive Arthurian anthology, The Book of Adventures, which the author compiled for Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria-Munich. Among the last premodern retellings of the story of the knight Ywain, Ibanoffers modern readers an invaluable window onto how the most beloved Arthurian tales were reinterpreted at the end of the Middle Ages and at the threshold to the early modern period. This book offers an edition of the romance, the first for nearly a quarter of a century, accompanied by a facing translation, the first into a modern language of any part of the Book of Adventures. It also includes an introduction, putting the romance into its wider contexts, and explanatory notes. were reinterpreted at the end of the Middle Ages and at the threshold to the early modern period.
