CALIFORNIA AND SWITZERLAND. "As it is written, To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see: and they that have not heard shall understand." --Rom. 15: 21. UP to the year 1868, the Seventh-day Adventists' field of labor had been confined to the United States, and to that portion of it north of the southern boundary of Missouri and east of the Missouri River. At a meeting to consider the fields and the distribution of labor, during a session of the General Conference which was held in Battle Creek, Mich., May 28, 1868, M. G. Kellogg made a personal appeal for the Conference to send laborers to California. Then and there Elder D. T. Bourdeau and myself each stated, for the first time in public, our impressions in regard to its being our duty to labor in that State. It was made a subject of prayer, from day to day, until May 31, when it was decided that we should go to California. Elder White wrote an appeal for $1000, with which to purchase a tent and send missionaries to the Pacific Coast. He pledged $25 himself to start the enterprise. At that time the railroad across the plains lacked five hundred miles of completion, so it was necessary to go by water via Central America. We left Battle Creek June 8, spending about two weeks in western New York, purchasing a tent and preparing for the journey. June 24 we sailed from New York City for California, by way of the. Isthmus of Darien, arriving in San Francisco, July 18, PROVIDENTIAL OPENINGS. 277 We found prices so high in San Francisco that it did not seem expedient to begin our labors with the tent in that city, so we presented the situation before the Lord in prayer, and plead with him to open the way. Our minds were at once impressed that it was duty to go northwest of the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Nearly Forgotten: Seventh-day Adventists in Jamaica, Vermont, and Their Place in Vermont History, Floyd Greenleaf traces the birth of not only the local Seventh-day Adventist congregation in the rural township of Jamaica but also the rise of the Seventh-day Adventist movement itself, with its roots in Millerism and the development of second-advent and Sabbath theology. Greenleaf explores the complex and dynamic relationship between the trajectory of the church and a multitude of social, economic, political, and religious forces at play during the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century. The book gives us an intriguing glimpse at the church's heyday and a mysterious decline that now leaves us with only memorabilia, brief personal accounts, diaries, some church records appearing in denominational publications, and overgrown tombstones. And yet, based on all the clues Greenleaf examines, the vibrant lives appearing in his narrative are important to the story of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. They not only reflected Adventism of the time, but Vermont history as well, and left a mark on the local scene. What life forces remain active, and what elements of identity have persisted to bring us to where we are today?

Book Seventh Day Adventism in Africa

Download or read book Seventh Day Adventism in Africa written by Gabriel Masfa and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-16 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the complex history of Adventism in Africa, situating it within the context of African traditions and culture. From a small movement with origins in the United States, the Seventh-day Adventist Church has grown worldwide. It is one of several Christian denominations present in Africa and yet the history of Seventh-day Adventism in the global South has been largely unexplored by scholars. The book highlights the discrepancies between western traditions exhibited in the missionary enterprise and African religious systems. It also explores the intricate relation between colonialism and African Adventism in line with established studies in African Christianity. It will be of interest to scholars of religion and theology, particularly church history and mission studies, as well as African studies.

Such a significant number would perforce share in a significant amount of denominational history, and indeed would have a significant history of their own. That is what Louis B. Reynolds has drawn here, the result of many years of patient research and interviewing. Church-wide issues and the founding and development of major and minor institutions are reviewed, as well as human-interest vignettes of individuals and local successes. The volume is enhanced with specially commissioned paintings by Harry Anderson. - Introduction, 1 The Millerite Involvement, 2 A Beginning Out of a Tragic War, 3 The Hidden History, 4 Where a Few Were Gathered Together, 5 Into the Lion's Jaws, 6 Infants of Spring, 7 Shadow and Substance, 8 The Right Arm, 9 New Trails in the Old West, 10 The Oakwood School, 11 A Bright, Believing Band, 12 Treasure in Earthen Vessels, 13 A Boarding School in the North, 14 The Branches Overhang the Fence, 15 To the Cities of the East, 16 Separate Conferences:A Road to Fellowship, 17 Ambassadors to the World, 18 Never to Become Disheartened, Appendixes
