Life in his suburban home seems satisfying, but something still stirs within. Were these purveyors of death sent from the Devil himself? Will Dasher risk it all...one...last...time? An Eye for an Eye and Your Other Eye and the Rest of Your Family will have you questioning virtually everything about your own life. "Baldacci has penned a scathing commentary on today's America and masked it as a pseudo-religious, mind-destorying crime thriller replete with horrifying descriptions of things that only appear in a psychopath's darkest nightmares" -Anonymous Amazon Reviewer

Book The Shape of the Eye

Download or read book The Shape of the Eye written by George Estreich and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[An] elegantly written, unsentimental memoir."—PEOPLE MAGAZINE [PEOPLE's Pick of the Week] Winner of the 2014 Nautilus Award represents “Better Books for a Better World”—the Silver Award in the category of Parenting /Family. When Laura Estreich is born, her appearance presents a puzzle: does the shape of her eyes indicate Down syndrome, or the fact that she has a Japanese grandmother? In this powerful memoir, George Estreich, a poet and stay-at-home dad, tells his daughter's story, reflecting on her inheritance --- from the literal legacy of her genes, to the family history that precedes her, to the Victorian physician John Langdon Down's diagnostic error of "Mongolian idiocy." Against this backdrop, Laura takes her place in the Estreich family as a unique child, quirky and real, loved for everything ordinary and extraordinary about her. "In this wise and moving memoir, George Estreich tells the story of his family as his younger daughter is diagnosed with Down syndrome and they are thrust into an unfamiliar world. Estreich writes with a poet's eye and gift of language, weaving this personal journey into the larger history of his family, exploring the deep and often hidden connections between the past and the present. Engaging and unsentimental, The Shape of the Eye taught me a great deal. It is a story I found myself thinking about long after I'd finished the final pages." —Kim Edwards, author of The Memory Keeper's Daughter "A poignant, beautifully written, and intensely moving memoir" —Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting for Stone “The Shape of the Eye is a memoir of a father’s love for his daughter, his struggle to understand her disability, and his journey toward embracing her power and depth. Estreich is raw and honest and draws us each into a new view of what it means to be 'human’ and what it means to be ‘different.’ This book is beautifully written, poetically insightful, and personally transformative. To read it is to rethink everything and to be happy because of the journey.” —Timothy P. Shriver, Ph.D., Chairman & CEO of the Special Olympics "The Shape of the Eye personalizes Down syndrome, bringing a condition abstracted in the medical literature into the full dimensionality of one family's life. It's brave of George Estreich to make what has befallen his family so public, trusting of him to let an unknown audience second-guess the family's choices. Because he's opened his home and heart in this memoir, we are privileged to witness in chaotic, heart-wrenching, joyous detail what it means to have and to love a child with Down syndrome." —Marcia Childress, Associate Professor of Medical Education (Medical Humanities), University of Virginia School of Medicine

Book Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative

Download or read book Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

Book excerpt: There are many things that make Bruno special. He loves riding his bike and playing soccer, he is a great brother and is passionate about animals. He also has a prosthetic eye and in this book he tells you all about it. You will discover why Bruno got his special eye, how does he take care of it, how to protect eyes from accidents and what is a visit to the ocularist like. Having such a special eye is just one of the many things that make Bruno unique. This positive book will be a great resource for any child with vision in one eye, with or without a prosthetic eye, scleral shell or cosmetic lens. My Special Eye is also available in Spanish (Mi ojo especial: Un libro para niños sobre prótesis oculares) and Italian (Il mio occhio speciale: Un libro per bambini sulle protesi oculari). For more information, visit facebook.com/MySpecialEye/ From the Author: The story behind My Special Eye book My Special Eye was created a few years after my son lost vision in his left eye when he was 2 years old. One year later he had surgery to replace his eye with a prosthetic eye. It is an understatement to say that this affected our family deeply. Apart from the shock and pain for the suffering of our child and the anxiety for his future, we found ourselves dealing with something completely unexpected that we knew nothing about. Ocular prosthesis, scleral shell, hydroxyapatite implant, uveitis, phthisis bulbi, band keratopathy, evisceration, enucleation... suddenly all these terms became part of our day-to-day vocabulary. My Special Eye is the children's book we would have liked to have at that time. It will be a useful resource for any child with vision in one eye, a prosthetic eye or a scleral shell. Explaining a child that he or she needs an ocular prosthesis is not easy. However when the time came we found that our son and his sibling were way ahead of us in terms of acceptance, resilience and positivity. Also we soon realised that losing vision in one eye didn't limit our child in any way. For him his prosthesis meant that now he had a special eye that could be taken in and out. Nothing more and nothing less. I hope My Special Eye book will help monocular children and their families to realise that having a prosthetic eye is just one of the many things that make them so special and unique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some atheists, it's enough to simply not believe in God. Some people believe, but you don't. And that's OK.Other atheists, however, find themselves constantly being asked to justify why they don't believe in God, to explain how they can possibly have morals without believing in God, to respond to various arguments that supposedly prove the existence of God, to acknowledge that America was founded as a "Christian" nation, etc. And if you don't have a background in philosophy, formal logic, comparative religions, ancient history, and various scientific fields, it can be a bit daunting to attempt to respond to questions and assertions like these.Well, fear not! "Common Sense Atheism" is a collection of original essays that address these issues and many others in clear and easy to understand language, with just a dollop of humor to make it all go down smoothly. These essays will help you understand and explain to others why a lack of belief in God really is the only rational choice. After all, you shouldn't need a PhD to defend your lack of belief.
