Book Hannah s Prayer and Its Answer

Download or read book Hannah s Prayer and Its Answer written by Ronald S. Wallace and published by Eerdmans Publishing Company. This book was released on 2002-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Old Testament story of Hannah stands as a powerful example of the importance and efficacy of prayer. In these pages master Bible teacher Ronald Wallace transforms Hannah's story and the entire narrative of 1 Samuel 1-7 into a satisfying, illuminating Bible study for individuals and groups. The fruit of Wallace's lifelong exploration of the biblical texts, this book reflects his sensitivity to both the ancient context and the contemporary relevance of the Hannah narrative. Wallace's skillful handling of this story not only spells out the meaning and implications of the various events but also reveals significant counterparts in the New Testament. Central to the story of Hannah, however, is the role of humble, persistent prayer in the life of faith. By moving carefully with Wallace through the first seven chapters of 1 Samuel, readers will find encouragement for their personal prayer life and, further, will realize anew the importance of praying more broadly for the people of God and for all of society. Filled with scholarly insight yet easily accessible to readers at every level, Hannah's Prayer and Its Answer provides a wonderful guide to this beloved -- and spiritually rich -- portion of Scripture. This book was released on 2009-03-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written centuries before Christ, the Psalms of the Hebrew Bible have been prayed by Christians since the founding of the Church. The early church fathers expounded the psalms in the light of the mystery of Christ, his death and resurrection, and his saving redemption. In this book, a Benedictine monk examines the Christian praying of the Psalms, taking into account modern and contemporary research on the Psalms. Working from the Hebrew text, Fr. Laurence Kriegshauser offers a verse-by-verse commentary on each of the one hundred and fifty psalms, highlighting poetic features such as imagery, rhythm, structure, and vocabulary, as well as theological and spiritual dimensions and the relation of psalms to each other in the smaller collections that make up the whole. The book attempts to integrate modern scholarship on the Psalms with the act of prayer and help Christians pray the psalms with greater understanding of their Christological meaning. The book contains an introduction, a glossary of terms, an index of topics, a table of English renderings of selected Hebrew words, and an index of biblical citations. Praying the Psalms in Christ will be welcomed by students of theology and liturgy, by priests, religious, and laypeople who pray the Liturgy of the Hours, and by all Christians who seek to pray the Psalms with greater profit and fervor.

Download or read book Method in Prayer an Exposition and Exhortation written by William Graham Scroggie and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1916 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VI THANKSGIVING In our study of the great elements which enter into the making of Prayer, we now come to the fifth and last, Thanksgiving or Praise. Our Lord's instruction on prayer teaches us that it commences in strict privacy (Matt. vi. 6), and ends in public (Matt, xviii. 20): first, alone with God, and then, before Him in fellowship with others. This is the true order, and can never be interfered with without loss to the one who would pray. The sufficient reason why prayer meetings are so dull, as a rule, is that private prayer is so neglected. If a man is not on intimate terms with God in the secret place, he cannot hope to be powerful and convincing in his public prayers. True intimacy with any one, most of all with God, is not a thing that can be assumed at will: it is the outcome alone of dwelling ('in the secret place of the Most High, and abiding under the shadow of Shaddai." And so in our study of Method in Prayer we began with that which was personal and innermost, and have worked to that which, for its highest exercise, perhaps, must be shared with others. The work of Praise is much wider than that of Worship, in that, while the latter is occupied only with God, the former includes the whole circumference of things of which God is the Centre. There is a great deal more in the Bible about Thanksgiving or Praise than we would imagine who have paid little attention to the subject; and the great importance of it is everywhere in evidence. Praise is comely for the upright, therefore His praise should be continually in our mouths. Our tongues should speak of His Praise all the day long, for whoso offereth praise glorifieth Him. We should enter into His courts with praise, for He exalteth the praise of all His saints. It...
